The fastest I've seen fly was a ShredAir with about a 48" wingspan and the recommended power system.

Shredair was probably where they got the plane, and not the name of the plane. check out http://www.shredair.com/ . They specialize in high performance competition sailplanes that compete in the FAI classification called F5B. Interestingly enough the world championships for F5B are next week in York England. The fastest plane on the circut that I know of is the Avionik with the Plettenberg 18 cell drive system. It sucks better than 180 amps on 18 Sub-C sized cells for more than 2000watts. It can accelerate almost vertically at more than 10,000fps. Check out http://www.icare-rc.com/ if you want to get the plane or drive.

Or make it out to Northern Virginia and check out several Avioniks and other F5B planes fly at the Virginia F5B contest on October 2.
