Are there any giant scale sailplanes out there in the $400 range?
Does anyone have for sale, or know of a source for giant scale 4-meter and larger) sailplanes under or arounf $400? Preferably with a glass fuse. Does such a thing exist or is this just unheard of?
Thanks

Hmmm, for $400.-, and 4m + wingspan ?
That will be hard to find, scale or non-scale.
If it doesn't have to be scale, you could spend a liitle more and get the Alpina 4001 from Multiplex : http://www.multiplexrc.com/alpina.htm , $ 460.-
If it has to be scale, look at the ASW 28 from Icare, $ 499.- : http://www.icare-rc.com
I have the Alpina myself, and I just love this bird, flies superb !
Recently, I installed an electric drive in it, to be independent of the winch, and even with the added weight of the electric drive system, it still flies great !

If it doesnt have to be scale
The Aquial Grande has a scale look........in the 150 inch wing span.......Rudder Elevator Spoilers.......a nice flyer for 269.00 plus shipping. You couldnt ask for a easier plane to fly in that size range. It comes with a fiberglass fuse and built up wings and tail section. It is a pretty easy plane to build if your used to large wings and have a good size building board.
I believe its avalable from DC Hobbies.

4-Meter-+ Scale
The material cost goes up as the cube of the wing span. A quality kit of built up construction with a 4-meter span would have to be priced at nearly $400. By the time you add covering, glue, shipping, and eastern European or far eastern labor you are way over $400. You might be able to find a used model with serious defects in need of repair for $400. There is a remote chance that you might be able to steal a nice 4-meter scale model from the widow of a recently deceased modeler for $400.
If you are willing to put in a few hundred hours of skilled labor you could consider a couple of quality kits from Sky Bench Aerotech in the $90 to $130 range. These kits are only about 3-meters span and don't have fiberglass fuselages.

Another choice, if you don't mind building :
The Ka8 from Flair : 3.75 m wingspan, all built up. The kit is around $ 300.-
It's a very easy build, but it is a lot !
In his review of the Ka8 in S&E Modeler Don Bailey put it this way :
A lumberyard in a box....

Actually i was/am considering the ka8 from Flair. I have the issue of S&E Modeler with the acticle. Looks nice! The only thing that kinda bothers me it that i have a 3-meter Ka6, so it just seems so similar. I kinda want to do something different.

Noah, as I said before, the problem is the price you are setting, something in the 4m range, especially with a glass fuse, be it scale or non-scale, will be hard to find.
I am in the process of setng up my own business, importing kits from Europe, from MKR Modellbau in Germany ( http://www.m-k-o.de ), and also from Flair. MKR makes 2 glider kits, a Ka6e with 3.88m wingspan and a Ka7 with 4.4 m wingspan. You can look at them on their website, or at mine, http://www.mkrusa.com . MKR also has another vintage sailplane kit in the works, the Olympia Meise, but they don't have a date for the release yet. It will also be around 4m wingspan.
I haven't posted any prices yet, because the first kits will not be arriving before next month, bur the will be well over $500.-
The Flair Ka8 will be aprox. $270.-

yea, your right, i didn't think that is was a realistic number, but i thought i'd give it a try. Who knows, somebody else out there might know something i don't. RCuniverse is a good place to learn a thing or two.

The DG 600 from Multiplex could be what you are looking for.
Built well, glass fuse, wonderful flier, but a tad bit more than 400.

Try scratch building from a short kit. This Minimoa was built from the Chris William's 4m plan (I bought it for $100 and rebuilt the model to this state), but I'm scratch building one with the help of a Bob Holman short kit.
This was the maiden flight, and it went flawlessly!
