Default Flew my Ascent with 010 brushless

I finally got to fly my Ascent with the Astro Flight 010 brushless motor. The 010 fit the screw holes for the stock motor so the conversion could not have been easier. I used an 8 cell 1000 NIMH pack and a standard size receiver. The battery has to go all the way to the front to get the balance right.

I got in 2 flights. One for 20 minutes and another for 25 minutes. Not record breakers. But I was just trying to feel out the controls. I found out that the Ascent does not like quick turns. The conditions were not the best. The cloud cover was extremely low and the wind was around 10 MPH.

I expect to get much better flight times the next time out.

This sailplane was never flown with the stock motor. The conversion to the 010 was done to get some experience with a brushless motor.

The Ascent with the Astro Flight 010 is going to be a lot of fun.

My ascent turns on a dime and will seem to just float there until it picks up speed again. make sure you have about 3/8" washout on wings, move cg back from recommended cg (1/8-1/4'), at ;east 3/4" deflection on rudder and you will find a great improvement.

Which style AF 010 did you use? Was it the direct drive version? Thanks much. I'm looking to upgrade my Ascent soon. It desperately needs it.

I used the 010 direct drive with a 6 x4 standard non folding prop.

I used the controller that came with the 010. It shuts off at 5 volts.

This set up will not give you a steep rate of climb but I like to look for lift on my way up.

Whether you will like this set up will depend on your style of flying.

Thanks Bob.

I just ordered an AXI 2212/26. I talked to one of the guys I work with and that was his recommendation. (I have the pleasure of working in a hobby shop part-time.) I'll probably use a 2S li-po back and a Graupner folding prop. I'll post again to let you know now it flies.

[>:] i have my ascent allmost a 1year. it's a real fun to fly that plane.
i have a good power setting on my, Multiplex 480-3d(motor) Phoenix-45 ecs. 2cell li-po(2170mah(apogee)

"ptb" why do you use that motor? this is for a ducted fans, on my "vasa f-5 Tiger" i have a Mega 1615-3t.

" Bob Breese" you need a more power flight weight of "ascent" 19'5 oz, Astro Flight 010 can give you a 14.3oz of thrust with a 3cell Li=Po.

I am now flying the Ascent with a Mega 16/15/5 on 2 7.4 1500 LIPO packs. It will climb straight up and I fly until I get tried and come down. The motor mount should be beefed up for this motor.

It is one fun set up.

On my Hobby Lobby Three Dee I use a MEGA 16/15/3, a MEC 3:1, 11 X 6 prop, and 2 7.4 1500 LIPO packs. I get great performance and 16 minutes of aggressive flying. It will even take off on grass. You can put on quite a show with this set up. I am going to start using the 15 amp discharge 7.4 2000 MAH packs as the 1500s get a little warm. Flight time should exceed 22 minutes.

Have fun.

Hi bob, glad to hear your ascent is going good! I just bought some 1800 3 series lipos, but not for the
asent, it would probably tear the wings off!
In reply to phantom, the 1616-3 is a much higher rpm wind, more suited to speed or ducted fan.
the 1615-5 works fine for direct drive gliders.

I have just been having a blast with my Ascent with the Mega 16/15/5 with a 7.5 X 4 folding prop.

I have a FMA M5 in it. I use 2 7.4 1500 packs in parallel. I fly for 1 hour plus on almost all flights. I usually come down with 1/3 battery left. I get tired and need to also leave time to fly glow planes.

I do not apply full throttle as it will climb too steep and fast for the wings. But I have never folded the wings. I think the Ascent is simply a great sailplane. And it is so easy to transport.
