My ASH-25 glider (7m wingspan) is now ready...
Dear Colleagues!
After quite a lot of work my Lenger ASH-25 glider with 7m wingspan is now ready.
Its maiden flight was last week on Saturday.
Pictures and videos can be found at [link=http://ash-25.wmw-modellflug.at/gallerie_flug.aspx]http://ash-25.wmw-modellflug.at/gallerie_flug.aspx[/link].
Greetings from Austria

What as excellent endeavour! M<ust have takem a stupendous amount of work. I'd have been **** scared ever to have launched it. I guess that a towplane is the only way to launch - or would you chuck it off a cliff somewhere?

Hi!
No, of course I wont chuck it off a cliff
But during winter it will get its own unfolding engine to get it into air without being towed.

Hey Gerhard,
It took two of you to fly the wonderful machine, correct? Who controlled What. You must have woderful communication or be very lucky. Thanks for sharing your triumph.

Hi folks!
@Propbuster:
We built around 3 months on the plane because it comes very much prebuilt.
Our tow plane is a "Bully" with 2,7m wingspan and a ZG62 engine.
If you want to have more details about Bully please tell me, then I will collect the informations.
@kwmtrubrit:
You are right, we use a teacher-pupil-system, because I do not have the experience flying so large planes but my colleague Rudi F. flies everything and teaches me flying the ASH.
Right now Rudi flies the plane during the take-off until we release the ASH from the tow plane and takes over again for the approach and landing.
During the gliding phases I have the honor to be the pilot-in-command!
We do not mix both transmitters or only some channels - itĀ“s all-or-nothing.

Gerhard
When tomorrowĀ“s weather is fine we will spend another day of flying the ASH - videos and pictures will be posted on my homepage [link=http://ash-25.wmw-modellflug.at/]http://ash-25.wmw-modellflug.at/[/link]

I am very interested in your experiences with your ASH-25 as I just purchased one with a self launch system. I have been flying the 5.2meter Nimbus 4DM with a self launch system; it is a little challenging but great fun!

Dear vent2s (quite a nice nickname, eh? ;-)))
The ASH-25 is a wonderful model, sheĀ“s flying beautifully.
You can find some videos on my ASH-25-HP ([link=http://ash-25.wmw-modellflug.at/gallerie_video.asp]http://ash-25.wmw-modellflug.at/gallerie_video.asp[/link]).
During winter and spring she gets a self launch system to avoid the need of being towed in the sky.

Hey you have a great glider!
IĀ“m just completing my order from Lenger to buy one 7m ASH-25 glider as well! What kind of unfolding engine assembly you were thinking of? I have no friends here who would have a plane big enough to tow this bird to sky, so the best option would have it with its own power. Is it something you could get with the kit (I still can alter my order), or do you intend to do a custom installation from your own drawings?
How do you rate the flying characterics of your glider? I was first looking 10.6m glider from Germany, but thought its really over the top and even 7m glider needs some special arrangements for transporting.
Regards,
Leif

Hi Leif!
We are building the unfolding engine ourselves - its type is close to the Elicker type but an original Elicker is probably the best one if you want to buy one.
Aks Mr. Lenger which is the best for the ASH-25.
The characteristics are: wonderful.
You can fly it slow without having to fear to get in trouble - sheĀ“s getting "weak" on the controls if you fly too slow.
You can perform powerful shot-overs as you can see partly on the video on my homepage.
Being towed is a litttle hairy when the tow plane is not powerful enough. Ours is on the absolute limit.
Landing is no problem due to the brake flaps - says my teacher, I havenĀ“t landed it by myself.
You should have a good "runway", which ist broad enough!
These are some impressions of my ASH.
I wish you the best if you buy one.
One last hint: Remove the Sub-D-plugs and use 2 green Multiplex plugs instead!!!!

Gerhard,
Finally got to see your great video, I can't wait to get my ASH! Mine is coming with a 5 bladed self launch system , sequencer and door servos installed; I am not such a great technician and did not want to make any mistakes in this area. One question, are the cables and Sub D wing connectors installed with the model?? Just curious. I already bought an easy patch with the multiplex connectors and will swop them as you recommend.

Hi Vent2s!
The cables and Sub D connectors were not installed in the wings but the cables were soldered with the Sub D.
We had bad luck with the brake flaps flight before we replaced the Sub Ds. The funny thing was that during groung checks before takeoff both flaps went well but then in final approach something happened to make one inoperable.
And having only one brake flap coming out of the wings while approach and landing is quite big trouble...
But now everything is fine.

Well thanks for the heads up, I will definitely use the multiplex connectors. I did see that you only had one brake flap deployed in the video, so that answers that question. Anyway I hope you make more videos of your flights! Did you basically follow the CG location and contorl throw from the directions? If not, what knid of throws are you using and where did you put your center of gravity? Because, your model seems to perform really well!
Thanks for the insights.

Hi Jim!
Yeah as you saw on the video that was quite a landing with only one brake flap...
If I had been the pilot-in-command and not my teacher, the ASH would have been history...
Control surface movements and CG are completely as stated in the manual.
The only thing I trim during flight is the mixing rate from ailerons to the rudder.
Of course there will be new videos made in the new season!

Hi Gerhard! Hope you are well!! How is the installation of the up and go drive unit going in your ASH-25?? You have an insrtuction page on your ASH-25 website with some building insrtuctions of your own...Do you have an english version?? Finally, I noticed you used HS-85MG servos through out the saiplane except in the rudder; you used the HS 225MG servo; is this a smaller servo??
Thanks as always.
Jim

Hi Jim!
Sorry, unfortunately I do not have an English version, but we can talk about every piece of question in English ;-))
The rudder servo I took is bigger than a 85MG because I always take a good rudder servo - the 85MG seemed to be too "weak" for me.
The up and go unit is well in production - due to catastrophic weather (snow since almost 5 months) IĀ“m not really hot for it.
IĀ“m looking forward to answering your next questions ;-))
Best greets from snowy Austria!
Some impression about the Austrian thoughts about the long winter:

Thanks as always for your quick reply! I am sure in the next few weeks and months, I will have more questions for you. I am still waiting for my ASH to arrive. Oh by the way, do you transport yours in a van...how do you transport it??
The trees are blooming in Memphis and it is about 15c in the afternoon.
Hope it thaws in Austria, soon!!!

Hi Jim!
I put it into my MiniVan after removing every back seat in the car - thereĀ“s 3 centimeter space between the rudder and the trunk lid...
But I will buy a trailer in spring - if it ever will come...

Ohhhh. Well I guess that definitely means that I will have to get a car top Pod. I have a feeling that I will be quite surprised by the size of this sailplane.

By the way I also see that you use a gyro. Why?? Probably a dumb question, but I am curious because I bought an Easy Patch for the ASH and apparently a gyro can be attached to it.

Hey Gerhard, Just got my ASH-25 today, after waiting many months; production was delayed. What a beautiful sailplane, verrrry big. I wish I had a production crew like yours to help finish mine but I will have to go at it alone. I think it will take a little while to do but I want to do it all right. Hope all is going well with yours.
