motor for House of Balsa 2x4
Hey guys,
i have a House of Balsa 2x4 glider i want to convert to electric. What size motor do i need? gear box? battery size?
I found this GWS 400C ([link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHHL1&P=7]GWS400C link[/link]) system on eBay for cheap,
is this powerful enough? Would be great if it suits!!
Cheers

A 400 wouldn't be enough motor, unless it's brushless, with Lipo power.
I built the 2Tee, basically the same airplane, powered with a Speed 600, 3:1 gear box, 12x9 prop, 8 cell battery.
It flew OK.
With an AXI 2820-10, and Lipos, it flew well!

I'm going to disagree with you this time Paul. But I'll grant that the weight is what would be the determining factor. A lightly built and equipped 2x4 should fly OK with a geared Speed 400. It won't be a hot stunter but as a way to get the model up to thermal country I don't see why it should not work.
If you don't want to go Lipo's then a pack of 7 or 8 of the smaller Nimh 650 mah cells would provide a decently light but still powerful pack to run the motor. All up weight of the model to fly with the Speed 400 should not be much over 20 to 23 oz. If it's heavier than that then climb performance is going to suffer.

Cheers guys,
I'll have to weigh my planbe, and see how i go. i am leaning towards just running a 540 or 480 motor, and keep it simple!
