XL3200 Motor Sailplane Motor Choice
Can anyone suggest from experience a good combination of brushless motor, esc, nicad battery combo? I want to get up fairly fast but dont need a hotliner--interested more in long relaxing duration. Looking at kontronik 480-33 with a castle creations 45 esc.
Got any ideas?
thanks

You will need a geared motor so as to run a large prop in a sailplanes. Your choice of motor is a good motor and certainly good for this sailplane, but you need to buy a geared version, 5,2:1 gearbox eg in your picked motor.
You could prop it about 500W for solid climb. I don't have detailed spec of your picked motor, but supposed you use 10 IB3800, ie 10v.,and to get 500w , then you need to prop your set up to 50A. ie 10vx50A=500W input.
Many other option could be used for your said sailplane. You may check with your favourite LHS for details.

I installed the Medusa MR-028-056-1900, with a Planetary 4.3-1 Gear drive (Multiplex), Phoenix 45 amp brushless sensorless speed control, 3-cell 4000 mah Li-Poly, swinging an 18x9 Cam prop. Available at NES...

I have an XL3200 with an astro 05 planetary with a 14x9.5 graupner folder. I run a 10 cell 1900mAh nicad pack and get three good lifts on a charge.
Another guy I fly with has the same plane and motor with a 12x6 prop with 8 cells.
The Astroflight 05 planetary is a great motor - very reliable and I would highly recommend it. They're not cheap, but nothing is in this class of motor.

Good luck with your choice!

I thought you might benefit from some more info - The chart is data from an eagle tree flight recorder that I did - this is sitting still, running the throttle up to full and then backing it down in increments. 14x9.5 prop, 10 cell nicad pack, astro 806p

I want to get a XL3200 later this summer. My thinking was to use a Phasor 45/3 direct drive with a 2p3c 3200 LiPo. Why the gear drive? Is it to reduce the RPM on the prop. More run time?
My sailplane experience to date is a 2m Aspire and the Ascent. The 2 meter Aspire flys great with a Phasor 30/3 direct drive.
Should I really be thinking about using a motor/gear drive on the XL3200.

If you use a gear drive, you can use large diameter props, which let you climb a lot faster. If you climb faster (I mean at a steeper angle), you have a more efficient use of your battery, which means you have more climbs with one battery pack. My XL3200 (I use a gear box) climbs at about 70-80 degrees, and I can easily climb 12 times. Since this is a thermal plane, I would recommend a gear box. You want to climb to altitude fast and thermal...

I have ran my XL3200 with a Phasor 45/3 for a while now. 3S3200 FlightPower battery gives me some good climbs (appr 5) on one battery. Used 13x6 CadCam folder on it and were pleased. Not 70`climbangle but gives me a lot of thermal searching although. (Did I mention I never use gears on my brushless motors, really hate gears...)
Upgrade going on right now: Throws the Phoenix 35 and installs a much better ESC; Jeti70 Opto Plus and my next flights will be done using 4S4000 batteries and a 11x6 or 12x6 propell. Also installing a KoolFlight UBEC.
Have thought of buying a Cyclon Elite 10 for my XL but since I have bought a couple of big scale gliders there are not too much money left... This Cyclon have the gearbox integrated.

Bricklifter,
I had the little sister to this (Ellipsoid), I powered her with a Mega 22/20/3E, a 3:1 gear box, a 16x11 Carbon Fiber prop, and a 4 cell Lipo with a 60AMP Speed control.
She pulled a whopping 755 watts !! at 56 amps. Whe would go zero to 400 ft in under 5 seconds, so you could climb about 10 times and soar until your arms get tired of holding your transmitter.
Full up weight was about 5lbs. She was fun while she lasted. I lost her at the Az Electric Festival due to being shot down by another modeler.
Just make sure you have her pointed slightly upward when you punch the throttle, she accelerated like a rocket ship. HAnd launches were done by myself with the throttle at about 5/8's power. when I was sure of her direction, I punched it and she would climb on her tail. what a blast.
Good luck in your search for power.
Dave
