Default Battery Pack for Sailplanes (esp. Fling 2m)

Hi,
what battery do you use for your sailplanes? (the servos that is) ..

In my motor glider i use 2 packs, one for the motor and one for the servos (and i disable the BEC).
The one for the servos is just a pack of 4 AA batteries .. but when i was reading Fling's manual it
says to use a 4.8 v .. why can't i use my 4 AAs .. i used to plug those in my Rx (a Berg 4) and it was
working just fine !!

What do you think ?

AntP,

The Fling 2m manual recommends a 4.8v., 350MaH pack. These are much thinner and narrower than a 4xAA cell pack. I think what you have here is a question of will it fit. If your AA pack fits, then go ahead and use it. Just make sure you don't get it nose heavy.

I used a square 4 pack of 850 mah AAA Nimh in the nose of my fling 2 meter. Fits perfectly and works great.

Hi there.

The question you've asked equates to the same thing...............4 x AA cells do come out at 4.8v (unless you are using dry cells) ?.

My larger models (WM Bard, CM Pro Discus CS, Vortex Rio) are powered by 1000mAh, 2/3AF, 4.8v packs.

My Micro gliders (Mini Weasel, Alula and NanoFloh) are powered by 300mAh, 2/3AAA, 4.8v "flat" packs. My Westwings Swallow will be powered by the same pack, but in a "square" configuration.

My MicroFloh XL is powered by a 700mAh, AAA, 4.8v "square" pack.

The bigger the ampage, the longer you have, in regards to flying time.......

You can use 4 AA dry cells. Cermark, or Servo City sell the dry-cell holder, but its a little crude in this day and age. A Nickle-metal-Hydride pack the size of a 4-AA dry-cell holder will be huge in MAH, like probably 2500 or something. Also, the 4 dry cells will be 6V, but thats no problem.

Things are done differently here in the UK, though.

It's very rare now, to see anyone using "dry cell" batteries in their models.........plus our governing body recommends the use of properly constructed power packs.

Ok .. I found something light that fits and works ..
I used a 7.4v 800mAh 2S LiPo by E-Flite (EFLB0990)
and a voltage reducer (down to 5.5v) .. this combo
is small enough to fit in the nose and light enough
for the fuse to still need some more nose-weight.

I am going out to test it right now
AP.

Taking lipos down below 3 volts per cell can destroy the pack... and the plane if that occurs in the air.
You're much better off with a 4-cell Nicad or Nimh pack in your glider.

The LiPo itself is way above 7 volts .. i just used a voltage regulator between the battery and the Rx to keep the voltage that reaches the Rx below 6v.

I totally agree.........any Ni-Mh from 600mAh to 1000mAh is ideal for a glider.

Yes, I know.... but, there's nothing in the system to prevent the Lipo from going below 3 volts per cell. That's what kills Lipos. It's an expensive death that Nicads and Nimhs don't experience.
Nicads and Nimhs just deliver less voltage, and the airplane's response shows that it's time to land and recharge.
The Low Voltage Cutoff in many Lipo ESCs will shut the system down when the voltage drops below that set point.. which means you sure don't want the airplane to be flying when that occurs!

KISS!!
Slope Flyer UK has it right. A 4xAAA or 4xAA NmHD pack will see you out for a day's flying if you get a 1000MaH+ pack. Also most any charger will look after it without any problem.
Dave.
