Friends,
The ESL contest will be held on 9/22-23. You don't want to miss out on
the fun. Since you have not registered yet, I presume you are hesitant for some reason. Let me try to push those reasons aside.
Even if you have never flown in a contest, you can register in Novice class, for which there is no cost. - FREE!!!
OK cost is now not an issue
Not feeling up to competition? Don't have a hot plane, fancy radio? Fogedaboutit!
Novice if for new flyers or flyers who do not feel up to contest flying but would enjoy giving it a try. There is no pressure and you can get unlimited help. Easy Gliders, Gentle Ladies, Spirits, and any other plane with a tow hook is fine. I flew my first ESL with a 2M Sagitta 600. I had a blast. -
OK, the plane/radio issue is now not an issue.
You don't know about contest flying. - NO PROBLEM!!! I walked into my first contest very nervous. That melted away fast as the format is really simple. There will be lots of people there to help you.
OK, can we put that one aside?
THE WINCH - I can't handle the winch! Easy! You don't have to launch the
plane yourself, if you are uncomfortable with the winch. I can run the winch for you or someone else can. This is completely normal. In fact if I wanted,
someone could launch my plane for me, and I fly in Sportsman class. This is
well within the ESL rules. At my first contest I did not run the winch once.
And there was no shortage of people willing to help me.
Can we put winch rear out of the way?
Spot Landing - what about spot landing. OK, let's knock this one down. I
score landing points maybe twice a day out of 7-8 rounds and I have been doing this for a while. So don't sweat spot landing. Just land it on the field and you will be doing fine!
So, spot landing is no big deal.
I encourage you to register. It is fun, and it is a great learning experience.
One fellow, who only started flying a couple of months ago, is already
registered as a novice. And there are two others, so you won't be alone.
This is not about winning. If it was, I would not be flying. It is about fun,
friends and building skills. All you need is a plane with a hook, a radio, AMA
card, hat, sunglasses, and a desire to have a good time. If you can bring that,
I promise a great time for all. There is nothing you need to do and nothing to
prepare. Just fly like normal.
Register now. If you change your mind, fine, but there will be no registration
at the field. Any plane with a hook qualifies. I hope you will join us.

We have over 30 pilots registered and we have 3 Novice pilots too.
Why not join us if you are in the NY/NJ/CT area. Easy to reach Long Island location. Big field, good winches, great thermals, fun people.
