Different classes of competition sailplanes
The F series competition classes are "FAI" or international rules competitions. There's quite a few classes...

I think that the AMA rules only include FAI events by reference (or if they are included there, it's at least a challenge to locate them) so a couple of items:
F3B is, in some senses, the pinnacle of sailplane competition... it's a 3-task contest format including thermal duration, speed, and distance tasks.
F3F is for slope soarers.
F3J is a thermal duration contest with hand-towed launches.
F5B is an electric glider class.
They're really contest definitions and some define an aircraft type fairly stringently while others do little more than limit things like size and launch method.
A good place to look into international soaring contest specs is http://www.fai.org/aeromodelling/rcsoaring/
