Sig Riser 100 electric Build

I love Sig products and have built more of them than any other brand. I built a Riser 2m back in the 90's but I haven't built anything in a long time so here I go! I plan on converting the 100 to electric so I can fly it at my local flying field which is electric only. Any Riser 100 input or comments are welcomed.

Well this kit will be fun for sure Dave after all it's a Sig! I originally bought a Scepter from Mountain Models to build to enter some woody RES contests but it was back ordered so I picked up the 100, I always wanted to build one anyways. Started on the wing which framed up pretty fast, I'm hoping to have the wing finished by next week.

I got the left side wing framed up and will start the other side tomorrow. This will be my first attempt at building a 2 piece wing.

It's easy - not much different from a 1-piece. Only recommendation is that you absolutely make positively SURE that your connector tube is anchored and braced to the max possible. BTW, my own practice is to use steel rods & tube to connect sailplane wings on 90% of my sailplanes - I'm just more comfy with that method instead of the laminated (usually ply/aluminum/ply flat pieces) type. I just set the tube in between the upper/lower spars and tack it in place with a bit of balsa & CA to set my dihedral (just enough to hold it in place). Then I install the rear webbing, set the wing up on her rear end and fill the entire area with epoxy, capping the whole thing off with the front webbing. Yeah, it's overkill, a lot of overkill, but I've never had a wing fail at the connector.
If you DO decide to go with the flat laminated type of connector, I would suggest (if it's not set up that way already) using thin ply as webbing at that connector area, and probably another bay out from there. That also will positively ensure the integrity of the connection. I also usually use a clip mounted on the bottom to actually hold the two wings together, but that's just me - I've never seen anyone else do it. In case you haven't noticed, I'm rather paranoid (that's a noid on each hand - a par-a-noid:o) about the wings on my planes. |

Thanks for the info Dave, the Riser came with a 1/4" OD steel rod and a 1/4" ID brass outer sleeve like what you use. I have a Sig Kadet Senior that has the flat aluminum type like you were talking about, the steel rod seems better to me by the way you described it. I made balsa ends for each side of the brass sleeves, glued them in place and then propped up each end of the wings and glued it in place to the spars using CA.
Tomorrow I plan on installing wood wedges between the sleeve and spars, add the sheer webs than stand them up and fill the rest of the cavity with epoxy like you suggested. It seems the Riser is going together quickly and I'm thinking of mods while at work today. (couldn't help it :cool:) 1. Electric motor 2. No counter balanced rudder 3. Slip in front wing hold down instead of a bolt. 4. Magnetic hold down on the hatch 5. Use Sullivan Gold-n-Rods for rudder/elevator 6. Yeah, looks good. Hey, mods are why we build planes. They're one of the main reasons I don't have any ARFs at all - you can't create with an ARF or RTF. Only one I'd maybe think about changing is #2, but again - this is me. That counter balance is there for a reason. Of course, with electric power you've got the advantage of power to help where the balance works now, so it might just be fine.
I really like #5 & 6, REALLY LIKE! My own sailplanes (Airtronics Aquila, CG Gentle Lady, GP Spirit-100, AFI Super Monterey restoration & Bird of Time) all use sullivan gold-n-rods and all have embedded mini-servos controlling the spoilers (one in each wing) except the Monterey, which has no spoilers. |
Thanks Dave I definitely got into ARF's the last 15 years or so but I'm back and having such a good time again, can't believe how much fun! Yeah mods and even thinking about them are an enjoyable aspect of the hobby to be sure. The Aquila has been on my list for a long time how does she fly?

Aquila's the best flyer of the bunch! With those tiny winglets that she's got she's the only glider I've ever been able to turn without banking. She really will turn absolutely flat if you do it right. Not half bad at slope soaring either, and she's still the only glider I've ever been able to catch right out of the air - she can fly THAT slow.

I have a digital set of plans already for the Aquila but a guy at the club field a few weeks back who has a fiberglass fuse Aguila kit said he will sell it to me for $40.
Well I was able to fully epoxy in the sleeves on both wings the way Dave suggested and install the rest of the sheer webs. I released all the outboard wing ribs too and should have them framed up tomorrow. As for the electric power on the Riser here is what I was thinking: 1. Wing is coming along, the left outboard wing framed up and installed a HS-55 spoiler servo! Okay it's getting exciting now as the wing is taking shape but I realized in my hast that I didn't drill holes in the ribs for the servo wire, not just one but both wings! Lesson learn? Probably not!

Mike Well I got a lot done the past week even though I had lots of stuff going on like Honey do's, kids, work, etc. I finished framing up the wings and carving those beautiful wing tips. I couldn't resist and started framing up the vertical stabilizer and rudder. I decided not to build the counter balance like I did when I built my 2m Riser. I finished the tail feathers and made a change to the horizontal stabilizer by flaring the tips out almost an inch on both sides, I think it looks better than the squared ends. I thought of doing the same on the main wing while I was building it which would have added 4 to 6 to each wing but decided last minute to sand the tips to look similar as the stabilizer.

Its been a while since I've made the time to work on my Riser. I have the fuse framed up and made a 1/4" firewall by laminating 2 - 1/8" pieces together with epoxy but I didn't build in any down or right thrust, crap!!! I believe it will be a mistake to leave it that way, I don't want to fight the tork of the motor. Any suggestions? It isn't to late to fix it now and shouldn't be to difficult.

I went ahead anyways and did it while I was listening to the Giants lose on the radio! Anyways I'm glad I did she now has 4deg of down trust and the 1/4" ply is recessed into the fuse instead of on the outside.

I feel like I'm finally getting closer to finishing my Riser 100. I glued in some support for the horizontal stabilizer, cut and shaped a pair of wing hold down blocks. I also made some custom brackets to support the out Sullivan tubes. I've been thinking on how to attach the front part of the wing to the fuse and I think I'll do it similar to how my 4-Star 40 wing is held on but of course now it is after the fact and I will have to make it 2 piece! It would have been nice to cut a new F1 rib to allow for this but there's always next time right?
