Best bet for my 8 year old? Need Help...
Hey everyone,
My daughter who is 8 years old would like an RC Helicopter. I too would like this What are the best models for beginners, something that can crash and be put back without having to buy expensive parts. I've heard some are designed to come apart in order to absorb the impact and all you need to do is snap it back together.
Batteries also - I've heard of models that have built in batteries, but when they no longer hold a charge, you're out of luck.
Suggestions?
Thanks!

If you want a Christmas gift that will last, you need to look at a hobby-grade heli instead of a toy-grade. Spend some time at your local hobby shop, since they'll more than likely be where you'll be getting your replacement parts & see what they recommend. Coaxials are very very steady, but you may outgrow them in a relatively short time. These are like the E-Flite MCX, MCX2, CX2, & CX3. For a beginner, the smaller may be better since damage to both the heli & surroundings will be minimized. Fixed-pitch helis are a little more challenge, but you stay entertained a lot longer. These are like the E-Flite MSR & SR-120. I wouldn't worry about collective pitch helis for now. This all being said, I would first recommend the E-Flite MCX or MCX2, & maybe the E-flite MSR. My son started flying an MCX when he was 8 & still flies it around, 1.5 years later.

The downside of an EFlite MCX is you'll pay 3x-4x as much for that as a similar Syma coaxial.
I started with a Syma S106 ($30 on ebay), and it's pretty easy to fly. The only thing that broke was the tail rotor sleeve. It was an easy fix with a drop of superglue.
No matter what you decide on, check out the flying instruction here:
