heli for a 5 year old...
My son is turning 5 in a month and has said that he would like an RC helicopter that he is able to fly. He has played with a havoc heli and was pretty good at it, but I'd like to get him something a step up from that. I have an MCX but I think it is too advanced... is there anything in between the two? I noticed a HobbyZone Millenium NTU at the LHS but I don't know anything about it yet - would this be good for him? Are there any other options that might work?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I actually think the mcx would be perfect for him as long as you had a lot of space. Hell, see if you can get a buddy box cable and help him when he needs it.

Their really is nothing inbetween a Havoc and a MCX..
Get him the MCX.. parts are really easy to come by and are cheap they are also extremely easy to replace...

You go dad! I agree with everyone else on the MCX. My grandson is 3-1/2 so too young yet. I need to see longer attention span and appreciation for delicate things first before putting him on my CX2. I'm also thinking MCX for him when he matures enough.
What I'm also interested in is how you plan to teach him. With Justin Chi as an example, we know it can be done! We also know young people have the reaction time of a cat.
So keep us posted on your progress! I for one am interested in how quickly he catches on. Betcha he catches on real fast.

RE: heli for a 5 year old...
I have a mixed feeling about mcx for young children. Being durable is a double edged sword. Although it is good that it can take punishment, it may also give a wrong impression that it is ok to hit stuff or crash.
If it was me, I would give him a sim to play with instead. I believe he will pick it up rather quickly. But, more imortantly, I would observe his behavior rather than flying itself. Most, kids will have no regard to crashing and don't work hard to avoid collision. Sign of readiness should be not how well he flies but how hard he tries to avoid a collision. After he can handle one on sim, get him a fixed pitch heli (not coaxial) that he will be somewhat more familiar in behavior to sim flying that coaxial that simply translates rather than rotato to a cyclic input. It should also be fagile enough that any impact will disable it. This should promote proper mindset as well.

So, the NTU is no better than the havoc helis then?
As I said I already have an MCX, so I guess I'll give him a chance with it and see how he does.

Jester!
why not try him with the AirHogs Reflex? it's 3ch as opposed to 2ch on the havoc but is very stable and pretty good for orientation?

I believe the first step in learning to fly heli is learning about balance (hover). MCX bypasses this important aspect. After seeing the durability of the new Blade MSR, I'm inclined to recommand this one over mcx for young person.

MCX then MSR. I dont think a Havoc can be compaired to the MCX. Stability and overall performance are way different. The air hogs reflex isn't a bad idea but I doubt you can buy parts once something breaks. The MCX parts are all over the net and in most hobby stores. The MCX will give him a better understanding as far as orintation goes then from there he can progress to the MSR and get the feel of better/faster maneuvers/response.

Then take the advice of the youngsters father (red_z06) and apply it to yourself, and see where it might take you ?? You'd be surprised I'am thinking..... [8D]

RE: heli for a 5 year old...
What? Use the sim? I have killed three sets of batteries so far and am about to kill my fourth set. I am great in the sim but its the heli that mkes me nervous cause I am SO afaraid of crashing it. I now have several of each part that can break so its not so scary any more.
