Just after I wrecked a Noob asked me : Why did you do that?

Or how many times have you been asked: How far can it go?

Pretty much anything when I'm tuning my engine. Maybe it's just me but I don't like distractions when my fingers are a couple of inches away from a prop spinning 10,000 rpm.

E-dave - I'm right there with you. I don't like to talk much when working on an engine, or even setting up my plane for that matter. During engine tuning, you can get hurt bad if distracted, and during plane setup, you could miss something which might cause a crash.

"It's not gas powered? thats dumb it doesn't make any noise."
Like I want it to.....

"Lemme try, Lemme try!"
Um....No

"It's cute...."
WHAT!?!?[:@]

"Does it actually go?"
No, it's just a static model.

"How fast does it go?"
Fast enough, Junior.[8D]

"My car can beat it..." (usually a radioshack)
Where is your car?

"Can I drove your ($1,000+) boat? I drove my cousins Tyco car once!"
One that I've seen in every R/C boat forum, "Why don't boats have air filters? My R/C car has them!" I repsond, "There isn't any dust on the water!" This one comes up about every 2-3 months.

Let's not forget about a certain web auction site:
"I don't know anything about these.............."
"I bought it at a garage sale..............."
"I'm selling this for a friend........."
"It'll do (yeah, right!) 60/70/100/200 MPH........" in an airplane that shipped it!
"It was radared at XXX MPH by a Cop.........". Yeah the same radar detector that clocks 90 MPH trees.
"Not O.S., Losi, Traxxas, (enter anything here)........."

this is a great thread. im 16 and i step outside to make sure the kids aren't out, so i take out my foamie and hover it. in a minute or two there are about 3-4 9 year olds pulling on my shirt asking how high can it go and can they try. then their mom asks if i built it myself (this also applies to cars/paintball guns/any other toys i have). anyway i tell them it can go to outer space if i wanted but the battery might run out. when im flying my hornet II or any other electric plane/heli, i always hear "is that gas powered"? no does it sound gas powered? and i hate when they ask "how big is the engine" when they have figured out it is in fact electric. and when i fly helis: how fast does it go? well it doesn't really matter how fast it goes thats not the point.

"How fast does it go? Can I try?" etc...

This might be irritating, but for Christ's sake, these people are newbies. They don't know any better. I really don't find it annoying, I find it amusing. I've performed freestyle demos at fullscale airshows, and I've heard it all. I'm glad that they're interested in the hobby. Acting elitist is a good way to scare people away.

What does annoy me, however, is when people say that I'm a natural. I don't mind when spectators at an airshow say it, because they don't know any better, but when other fliers say it I get pissed. I worked to be able to fly like I do, I wasn't born like this.
i completly agree these guys have not been intro duced to the sport and dont know any thing about it

i dont see the hummor in makin fun of a buncha little kids who dont know better the annoying adults i can under stand but 6 yr olds?

i myself do not own any rc vehicles except a couple cheap little cars and yes i am only 15 but im the type of person who likes to educate themselfs about as many hobbys/sports/anything they can as possible but you gotta remember you were new at one point too

but usually, i have found that the people with the brains required for something like rc planes/helis dont ask those kinds of questions.

I find it annoying when you people say that people under the age of 25 flying r/c is annoying... how is that annoying, seriously. Isnt it a good thing that we (im 16 and have been obsessed with the hobby since i was 6) are flying and building rather then stealing and doing drugs? whats so wrong with young people getting into the sport? To me and probably all the other young R/C'ers in here thats gotta be the most annoying thing.

Slowstick and the others that have taken this posting the wrong way, take note. Put yourself in their spot. How many of you got into R/C in the first place because of you seeing an R/C whatever operate? Some of you, like my son, were raised around R/Cing. He raced his first truck at the age of 6, doing very well for his age, beating people more than 3 times his age. He now races boats with me and I'm not afraid to hand him the transmitter of anything that I own. He has no interest in flying planes but has messed around with flight simulators.
Yes, I do take the time to answer questions of interested people at the pond but no way am I going to let a stranger handle my expensive racing boats! I hold a Fun Run annually in my city and I do bring one boat along for those that would like to try it. I put fliers in the LHS's to promote it for those that may want to give R/C boating a try or see what it's about.

ron - i do believe that this thread should be in the parkflyers section, because that is kind of who it applies to, you dont get little kids comeing up to the club with the sole purpose to annoy like you would flying ep stuff out in the driveway or down in the park.

This applies to all forms of R/C, whether it be planes, boats or cars. This has gotten sidetracked a little.

as long as it's annoying, it does not matter how sidetracked we get, it's still pertenant.

Yea that must be it, maybe they fly in circles because when they start doing loops and all those new fangled aerobatic moves, they lose sight of the plane due to loss of sight as a result of getting old. I think thats what it is.

Most annoying thing in RC is anyone under the age of about 25
That to me is an annoying statement. Now why would someone say that? I see 2 reasons:

1) Is it because these people (under 25) fly better and/or invent/discover spectacular aerobatic maneuvers than most of the oldtimers who were into RC since the hobby's infancy? New blood is what made the hobby innovate into what it is today. I don't think extreme 3D was invented by an oldtimer.

2) Or it is because those under 25 are presumed not having yet a decent job to afford the expensive hobby and they just live off their rich parents, that it is quite annoying to those who work their butts off to support RC?

Either way, it is plain ENVY and any statement born out of it really is annoying.[:'(]

BTW, I'm 37 and into RC flying for only 13 months. Started late because my parents couldn't afford RC when I was a kid and I'm in a point in my career where I can now afford it. I have some kid half my age at the club teach me 3d-ing.

I can't believe this one hasn't really come up....

How do you know when it's out of gas?

Then there's the obvious ones...

Why won't it start?
Does it always smell like that?
How high can it jump?
No way! Prove it!
Can you jump over that car?
Run it beside a car so we can see how fast it goes.
Do you think a cop will clock it for you?
Why do you pay so much for gas?
Can you put a muffler on it?
Why can't it just run hot?
Can I feel how hot it is?
Ouch! It burned me! Why?
Does it have brakes?
Why did you flip it?
Can you go under that parked car at full speed with your monster truck?
That's not very fast.
You're taking it too easy.
Break something!
Crash over there.
Go through the water.
How long will it float?
Why doesn't it float? It has big tires. It should float. I'll just set it in the water.
Water wouldn't hurt an engine.
It's gas powered. Why do you need batteries?
Nah, I'll be fine standing here in the middle of your path.
Would it hurt if it hit me?
I've driven lots of those before. Let me show you on your's.
Why are they so expensive?
Could you sell me one for about $50?
Why do you need tools?
Why didn't they just put a spark plug in it?
Why does the glo plug need to be hot?
You should just push your antennae from the end. It'll go down faster.
What good are oil shocks?
Why is the body so thin? It seems like it would get crushed. You should get a hard plastic one.
Ever thought about getting a metal body so it couldn't get messed up?
Wouldn't gas mixed with weed eater oil work just as well?
What would happen if a real car ran over it?
Why do you have more than one?
*kids that think they have to stand right in front of you while you're driving*
*anyone that knows nothing about nitro engine telling you how to tune it*

I'm sure there are more but I want to say this before I forget it. No matter how stupid a question may seem to you, the person asked it for a reason. 9.75 times out of 10 they will not end up buying a R/C on the same level as the ones we use here, then there is that 1 person out of 40 that seriously sees what you see in the hobby & would be willing to do what it takes to have their own controller. Answer questions truthfully & politely. You never know who you might meet or who you might get into the hobby. Being stuck up will turn other away from the hobby & until there are more R/C shows on T/V than reality shows & soap operas combined, we need all the support we can get!
