Hi Guys,
Firstly thank you for a great thread, I've been reading every single post and making notes as I go. Very informative for someone building his first jet. I have been a heli guy all my life, got offered to buy a complete CARF Viper from a very reputable guy here in Dubai and really enjoying this jet flying thing.
Long story short but decided to build my own jet as i'm a firm believer you cant fly these toys if you cant build them.
Its quite funny how you make a budget and blow the budget in two weeks when you go through this thread.
Please bare with all my stupid questions and i'm sure there will be so many.
My planned setup is as follows:
Cayman Scheme Ultra flash
Jet Italia 130 speed turbine
Jet tech tanks all round..still deciding on whether i should run smoke in the wing or saddle tanks. Ordered 3/16 fittings all round. Will be running the clunks from jet tech and in the main tank GBR Paper clunk. Also decided to go with the zeal 180cc UAT.
JR 8411 servo's all round, I did see there were some comments on the nose steering servo digital servo's, but i'm sure it will be fine as is.
Electron retracts - Hoping there is not much modification to be done but will deal with that.
Will be running 6mm festo tubing to fuel tanks and 4mm festo tubing from pump onward.
Still deciding if I should paint the canopy and in the back of my mind I almost know i'd screw up the first one...might just go ahead an order a spare.
I'm very excited for this build and please guys any suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards
William Blake

I went to go have a look and this was in the box...Could not really see it that well with all the covering. So I declined and said I will order the scheme I really want
I mailed CARF to ask for some pictures of the scheme in the shop (these are the ones I attached) and as soon as I got them I called the hobby shop to say I'm coming to collect :-)
I'm excited for this build but damn that canopy is haunting me...probably will start that first so that if i need to replace it I have the time to do that.
Just waiting for my shipment from Dreamworks...starting fresh so had to order a ton of tools and glue
Dave,
With all the UF's that you have built i was so hoping to bump into a video tutorial for us new guys that has never done this before. Any way I'm sure I'll be ok, I have a lot of RC friends here that love to jump in and help.

The Caymen Viper idea was a UK scheme we requested from a Porsche race car picture one of my customers found.
I suggested a UF version but was told it wouldn't work...clearly does :-)
Never done any video build stuff, takes hours! But there are lots of posts about it. Everyone has their own way. Important thing is fitting the glass with the frame fitted, its too flexible off and will likely never fit!

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys! I was going to follow the magnate route as i have a bunch coming my way.
I guess the canopy is one of thise things where once you start cutting there is no way back should my hand not be steady
Really appreciate all the comments and glad you guys like the scheme.
Will keep you guys posted with regards to my progress

Jon,
Yes I have the direct steer Electron retracts in my Ultra Flash. Takes a bit of cutting/ grinding to get them to fit though. Had to remove the frame mid-way down the nose gear bay as well.
I'll try to send some pictures tonight after work.
Very nice gear once installed. The brakes are wonderful.

John,
I also have the Electron gear fitted. You will need to open the nose gear door opening a bit and also take out one brace in the fuselage (see pictures). I have the GS-200 controller with a built-in gyro that works wonderful. Also the anti-lock brakes operate smoothly once you've found the right settings.
The only thing I didn't like were the springs. The nose wheel was so stiff it didn't have a whole lot of steering and bounced over bumps instead of filtering them. I cured that by taking off some of the material (reducing the diameter), but you can also get softer springs at Mc-Master. The same applies to the mains, these were also way too stiff. I received 2 sets to test from the factory free of charge and this has improved the landings a lot.

John, I have also wondered if the Behotec nose wheel strut might be shorter than the Electrons (the mains are definitely the same). Can you do me a favor and measure the length of the nose wheel strut from the top to the wheel axle? I will do the same with my Electrons later tonight.

Jon,
I thought the Electron nose gear looked long, but the model sits level with no alterations needed.
Some of my install pictures attached.
You have to open up the forward opening to get the retract unit in. Open it up to the maximum size that the supplied nose gear door will fill. You also have to extend aft the wheel cut-out.
I installed a torsion spring on the nose gear door to keep it closed with the gear-up during transportation. Airflow keeps it up in flight.

Hi guy's I pulled the trigger on a UF and looking forward to the build. Question: I have a J-C Rabbit 100 24 lbs thrust and was thinking of using it. I am at 5k Ft in altitude and wanted to get some opinions.. I do like how light it is at 2.2 lbs and here that the UF fly's great when set up light. I also have a option of getting a jetcat 140 rxi 32lbs thrust and at 3.5 lbs weight. 1.3 lbs more then the rabbit but 8 more lbs of thrust. So again getting some opinions and see what you guys would do. Thanks
Nice install JSF-TC

ucandoit,
Thanks.
I have a Wren SuperSport in mine, nominally 18lb thrust. We're at ~600ft MSL.
Not crazy fast, but a beautiful well balanced plane. GPS shows regularly 170-180mph max speed. People that see it are amazed that it is only 18lb thrust.
I can fly full throttle from take-off to landing and get 9 min flights with comfortable reserves. I have the Jet Tech main and saddle tanks fitted.
I may upgrade to a bigger motor later, but for now this is my favorite plane. 30 flights so far and only been flying it a month.
