In the early 70s, at RAF Kemble, we had two snow blowing rigs similar to the one in the first picture...ours had a pair of Derwents (with duck-bill like jet pipes) bolted to a wheeled chassis that was attached to the front of a bowser. It had a little (unheated!) cabin between the engines so someone could control them whilst the bowser driver drove it where needed! Never saw them work in anger before big Sickard units took over the task, so no idea how effective they were, but we had fun running them up every now and again!

Cheers,

Dick

I spent a whole weekend in one of those at Wittering in the late 80s clearing snow......not a nice experience... like you say sat between two derwents running at about 3/4 power and if anything went wrong (like a fire) you are bolted to the front of a fuel bowser complete with a couple of thousands of lbs of Jet Fuel!!!!!!

I saw a similar unit at the Laguna Seca Race track a few years back blowing off the track before the race. The turbine sat lower to the ground though.
