Default RE: Boomerang TORUS build thread

nickelup,

I'm flying mine with a Kingtech 170F as I had it lying around. With 4 batteries in the nose, I still had to add 700 gms of lead for it to balance.

A123 - 2 x 2300mAh packs
A123 - 1 x 4600mAh pack
Flight power 4350 mAh lipo pack for electron landing gear.

Despite all these batteries being right up in the nose, I had to add 700gms of lead. If you dont much care for the dead weight, i'm sure you could install a p180.

Besides the weight, I am using the original Sullivan tank which has a capacity of 3.7lts. I only get a flight time of 6 to 7 mins tops with the throttle at 50-60% power and a full throttle only for take off. You might want to consider that aspect as well.

All the best.

Thanks for the info that's something to consider especially when i am going to be using a dreamworks split fuel and smoke tank, i was just concern with the actual airframe if it can handle that kind of power?

I'm sure it can. But throttle control is key!!

ORIGINAL: NICKELUP

Hi guys do you know if the airframe on a torus can handle a jetcat 180rx with 40 lb of thrust, or i have to throttle back for the jet not to break apart?
As long as you are not abusive with the full throttle dives and hard pull-outs, this is a very strong airframe. It's part of the reason they build tail heavy as the booms have extra reinforcement to handle the bigger power plants. Plus they have the twin boom construction for thee wings.

What you will find for sure is that with the split tank you will be out of fuel in less than 5 minutes with that power plant. I have a 170 in mine and the Sullivan tank and it's good for 7 minutes of enthusiastic flying and that's it. If I puts around I can get longer but if you really want the smoke I would consider adding a secondary smoke tank as I did with my build.

My Torus is going up for sale as I have purchased an Élan to downsize so I can fit the thing in my RV.

Here's my equipment list:

MAP retracts with mechanical ball link steering with Dreamworks pro-link struts and wheels
2x A123 2300's with Jr HD switches
JR 8411/8711 on main flight controls
Futaba 6014 receiver with Orbit power jack (can be removed and price adjusted down 200)
80oz smoke tank with pump, and speed control
Sport scheme with both wing tip versions
Currently has 2s4000 pack for turbine and 2s1800 pack for smoke in tray in nose - quick release for charging outside the plane

Is available with a completely rebuilt Merlin 160 just back from Dreamworks - zero timed

5000 for complete plane with turbine or 2600 without turbine plus shipping. I can ship from us address so no border issues.

I hAve it up for sale in Canada but may be the wrong time of the year as season is winding down here.

Here is a video of the Torus with smoke - very effective

how many pounds of thrust on that engine it's really moving how fast do you think you doing have you clocked it? It seems like the airframe is holding up good with that kind of power.

37 lbs of thrust. The airframe handles it really, however, I don't yank it around.... Too much

I think someone clocked it around 180 but not verified in any way. Sure feels like it though.

Amazing speed range from this jet...

The MAP retracts have the unique feature of a mechanical ball link nose steering eliminating the need for pull-pull steering wires with the associated hassles. There is also a ball detent in the pivot block so the nosewheel stays centered as it retracts. I tried and it will stay there even with the fuse 90 degrees on it's side.

I've done a bunch more work since these pics were taken and will try to add some more later.
how do you like the map retracts? WB_1

The MAP retracts worked really well. He sourced the struts/wheels/brakes from Dreamworks for me but you could do the same yourself.

The main feature I was after was the steering without the pull-pull wires. For this they were excellent.

All of it is Sullivan 4-40 stuff and great quality.
Paul, on the other side of the horn do you just have the head of the bolt countersunk into the top of the surface? sullivan instructions say to drill a 1/2" hole and insert a dowel but the surfaces already have a ply plate in them WB_1

I used tapered head Phillips bolts with countersunk washers to spread the load over the ply plates. No dowels. At least that's what I can remember. I sold the plane over a year ago so can't really check.

Why is it I'm having trouble seeing the pictures in this build thread? I just ordered a Torus today and was hoping to find any tips or pictures of builds. Also, has anyone done any cockpit work like adding a full cockpit or so on? What is a good sized pilot to use in the Torus? Thanks in advance.

Has anyone built a Torus since Larry has taken over Boomerang Jets and what do people think of the model of old and new? I just got mine Friday 12-30-16 and was just wondering if there is anything a guy needs to look for in the building process. Seems the last thread was from 2014 before someone current posted. Just wondering some comparisons from those who have built the original Torus and the new Torus. Also, what size pilot bust fits the plane without looking too small or too big. Thanks.

Did all of you "pin" the hinges the way the manual suggest? Also it only shows the flaps being pinned.

Good to know there is at least 1 other person working on a current Torus. I wish there was more activity on this thread. Maybe you should add some pictures of your build Edgar. Maybe that would get things cranked up again.

I had problems balancing mine so I added 3-4" in length to the front of the fuselage
that eliminated the need for extra weight to be added to the front to achieve balance

I had problems with wing pin alignment. I ended up pulling out and replacing one pin and reworking the mounting for another. Now the wing installation is smooth. With a Kingtech 180 and 3 fairly heavy batteries above the nose gear, I still required about half a pound of ballast in the nose tip to balance it where I wanted.

Plane is my favorite jet to fly. Nice aerobatics, no bad habits in the air, slows down very nicely, no tendency to tip stall. Big enough to see at a distance. Slows down nicely for landing. Prolink gear are great.
