Default Now That will add some confusion

We already have Ducted Fan (DF) Electric Ducted Fan (EDF), and Turbine (Turbine) powered jets. Now young Tommy over at Airpower is calling his EDF stuff EPF Turbines

http://www.airpowerrcpro.com

That will confuse some of the new commers

So what does EPF stand for, electric powered fan? I have some of those in my shop, they suck paint fumes out of my booth.

Dont forget NDF (Nitro Ducted Fan) or GDF (Glow Ducted Fan).

The definition of Turbine from Wikipedia says: A turbine is a rotary engine.......

Last time I checked a electric motor was a motor and not a engine!

Man, I really have to jump on this one. 1320 Fastback has it right but incomplete. It really bothers me when engines get called motors. An engine is an engine not a motor.

We're getting closer.

While most people and gear heads consider an engine as a device that burns fuel to create motion, and a motor as a device that uses any other form of energy to create motion.

Per Miriam-Webster;

Definition of ENGINE
4: A machine for converting any of various forms of energy into mechanical force and motion; also : a mechanism or object that serves as an energy source <black holes may be the engines for quasars>

Definition of MOTOR
1: one that imparts motion; specifically : prime mover
2: any of various power units that develop energy or impart motion: as a : a small compact engine b : internal combustion engine; especially : a gasoline engine c : a rotating machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy

So technically Motor and Engine are interchangeable.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger, I'm not the one that wrote the dictionary.

No offense Jeff. The guy that wrote the dictionary was likely an English major and wouldn't know an engine if it hit him in the head.

Ford Motor Co.
Mazda Continental Motors
Detroit Motor Show
General Motors
Motorcycle
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.

If one says either "motor" or "engine" and you know he means, the message has been successfully conveyed...therefore correct.

Personally, I use "engine" when referring to fuel fed motors and "motor" when referring to electric engines.

If 50 people jump off a cliff in front of you do you follow? I put fuel in my engines and plug my motors into the wall. Today if someone talks about the "motor" in his plane I don't know if he's flying with an electric motor or an engine. Nuff said.

I don't care if it's referred to as an motor or engine, but still, what is EPF really supposed to stand for? All I can come up with is electric powered fan, which really doesn't describe it LOL

lol I think people have missed the point of my first post. It is the fact that Tommy is calling a fan a turbine.......

I have just been sitting here and watching things go off topic

The explanation that I heard is that an engine is a device that does work by the indirect conmversion of energy, whilst a motor is a device that does work by the direct conversion of energy.
So a heat engine, eg: steam engine, IC engine, jet engine produce heat first from the fuel, and the heat does the work.
A rubber motor and and electric motor directly convert enegy into work. Don't know if it's right but there does seem to be some rationale to it.

Primarily because people are sloppy in their speech and a commonly incorrect term eventually becomes the norm. That doesn't mean it's correct, just common phraseology. Like facial tissue is called kleenex, a bandage is called a bandaid etc. And the common term "I can't wait for my new plane to arrive". An old friend of mine used to say " If you can't wait then you might as well kill yourself". Think about it, "you can't wait"? "I can hardly wait" is appropriate. If you want to be sloppy in your speech then call an engine a motor.

EPF = Electric Powered Fan

Turbines are engines that utilize fans. That is probably where he gets it.
