RE: J10 vs F16 vs Lai
It is much cheaper and faster to use known design features for areas that meet requirements and only use new designs when necessary for changes in equipment or improvements. That is why many countries that are just starting to design their own fighters use features from other successful A/C. In most respects the similarities are mostly visual, or superficial and not really the same from an engineering standpoint.

The electronics and engine are the key features in any military A/C and until we get some intel on that we won't know how good it is. They have been stealing our secrets, quite successfully for a long time, so it may have good electronics and engines. I would like to think it's like the rest of what they produce though, cheap copies.

According to wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu_J-10
The J-10 was based on the J-9 but also reported by some to be based on the Lavi which used a lot of parts from the F-16....
Taking this further.... they're all based on the Wright Flyer
