Futura 1.9m Build

RE: Futura 1.9m Build
Excuse this if its a stupid question but what needs to be done to the canopy Ali? In the other thread looks like the glass needs installing and on yours looks like there's quite a bit of cutting to do (which would kinda terrify me).

RE: Futura 1.9m Build
Dom,
If you're going the vinyl route there's no need to make the cut out or install the glass. On the big Futuras I've had they mark the canopy shape with permanent pen fir you to cut. Don't be scared of that job - it really is easy and the glass sands back to a lovely finish. The trickiest part is the hatch fittings. You have a wooden 'hook' at the back, a bolt and captive nut at the front and 2 ( I guess as it's 4 on the big one) 'keyhole' slots for bolt heads halfway along the hatch. Not tricky per se but to get everything absolutely bang on takes a bit of time. That's why I'm letting Al show us the best way before I do mine

True enough Mark. Not convinced I like the shape of the cutout actually (i.e. the curve forwards at the rear). Prefer the shape of the black canopy on the Martini Futura Ali flew.

RE: Futura 1.9m Build
Hi Dom,
I like you am not a fan of the small canopy shape. I ask for all my kits to come with top deck uncut. I think the top hatch forms a natural line for the canopy shape that in my mind suits the shape better than the small one. On the latest Martini 1.9 I dropped it a little lower ( below the hatch line and onto the fuselage) Some like it, some dont. On the next one I am going to try a little less lower than the hatch line, and change the shape again. Easy to do with the right vinyl guy
As Mark said. The top deck/ canopy section/ canoe etc comes with some work to do. its the part of the build that I am least looking forward to. It involves the plywood hook at the rear, a bolt and captive nut at the front and some keyhole slots down the sides. This is made much easier by the kit being supplied with the correct shape wooden and fibreglass parts for this Keyhole system. My plan is to put the screws into the top deck. Glue the hook at the back then slide it into place with a little blod of paint on the bolt heads. This will mark the position where I need to cut out on the fuselage flange... Easy [&:]
Jeremy.
The Futura is not an all flying tail ( I will get some tail shots tonight)
The fin is moulded as part of the fuselage. The rudder is supplied pre hinged and easy to remove with just one wire.
Regards Al

OK, so if I understand correctly for the Martini 1.9 you didn't cut and install the glass at all. The black vinyl actually overlaps the canopy onto the fuselage. I'm surprised its possible to get vinyl to follow the curve without loads of creases and bubbles but I guess I'll find out if it can be done myself when I try it. I might actually just mask and spray.

What do you mean a bit !! LOL
You have to cut the vinyl pieces over size and then trim the centre line. The over size bit is so you have something to pull on when getting out the creases. Some vinyl takes to being stratched and others not. Too much and it can loose it's pigment.

RE: Futura 1.9m Build
a alot !! Wrapping vinyl is expensive, the 3M Carbon Di-Noc vinyl they use to wraps cars is around £50 per meter and to wrap a car in it is between 3-6k, even for normal non printed wrapping it costs 1.5-3k. The Di-Noc warrentee doesn't cover it for wrapping, but there is a new carbon vinyl that's has been released in the US called 3M Series 1080 Carbon Fibre Vinyl Wrap, but it's not available in the UK just yet. When it is there may be a Stealth Futura on the circuit
The amount Touche wants on his futura the bill isn't going to be far off wrapping costs

unfortunately not Ali, he has changed it from an easy to apply scheme, to one that's infinitely more difficult and a bit retro

Thank god for that I suppose the first scheme was no longer in fashion at the local Maccy D's cruise nights

Ali - Could you please measure the distance between the turbine mounting rails when convenient? P80SE is a lot lower diameter (112mm) than my intended 127mm fan. Just wondering how much 'adjustment' I'll have to do.

RE: Futura 1.9m Build
If only I could get away with that I would... How about some Blenderm tape holding the top deck on
The small Futura is 4mm Festo which I have stepped down to BVM tubing ( I prefer to colour code, and find it flexes far better than festo tubing) Using a Fest 4mm instert to a TP2 fitting.
Dunc.. No problem. bring it round.
No secrets here Mark. Dunc and I work as a team and Iron out all the designs long before vinyl is cut... then usually change it all as its being applied anyway Your scheme looks really good! I like it.
Dom.. I will measure it tonight for you.
Regards Al.
Its all about the Habu 32 in the shop today (25 sold and still going strong ) I also have a client coming to take delivery of a turnkey 1/5th scale F-86 as well as a customer driving over from Malta so wont get much of a chance to do an update on the Futura I dont think.
