The New F86D Dog Sabre
#1151
Thanks Sid, yes the rollout was shortened by Intairco 76mm e-brake wheels. They are good but there is a weight penalty and I think it's one of the reasons the right wing went to drop on landing. Overall I think my landing technique needs work, I am somewhat used to small light planes that just 'drop' in with a slight flair at the end. I need to build confidence in coming in nose high with some power on. Time to break out the simulator I guess, although not sure if Phoenix sim will accurately simulate a jet landing like that?
Any advise, thoughts, techniques welcome!!

Geoff,
I noticed the wing drop on appoach and wondered if it was tip stall. I looked back on the video to see if you had full flap. If it was tip stall you recovered very quickly. I have forwarded the link to your video to a friend in Colorado Springs who has flown the "D" extensively at 7200ft MSL for his comments.
My son has a BVM F-86 that was prone to tip stalls. He recently added wing fences and says it made a big difference. I don't ever remember seeing fences on the "D".

Flew my dog off a 5,000' blacktopped runway for the first time this past weekend...AWESOME! Had forever to line it up and a little smoke from the tires on touchdown just made the day...Great airplane, imho!

Thank you, Bob and back at you! Always good meeting new people and making new friends.
Pull up now, I believe that you will be happy with your switch. I am flying my dog on the Futaba 8fg and have a 14sg but have yet to link it to my dog but am very happy with it on all my other models
Happy flying all

Thanks, so far so good on the Futaba 14SG. I ripped out the Spektrum and installed a 14ch receiver. I lost my airspeed as this receiver doesn't support it. Also, I wanted to mix brakes with down elevator, but with a reasonable control throw on elevator, the mix chart got too narrow (in X) too apply full brake travel on the slave channel. So I put brakes on the right slider instead. The switchover was like a heart transplant!

I use CROW with my Dog. Works great, no tip stall even in full stall at 30mph (up high of course!). A little on why CROW is good. Ailerons up is like anti-flaps--you get less lift at the tips which also moves tip stall a bit farther away. The reduced lift does a three good things. 1)the tip won't drop. 2)less lift at the tip of a swept wing promotes nose high. 3)that nose high , along with less lift overall enables higher AOA which induced drag. That is just what you need at that key moment, a way to increase drag and get the nose UP without ballooning. I use about 3/8" up.

Hi Luca,
Contact Ian at ModellbauUK. I think he has at least one full kit still in the store room: http://www.modellbauuk.com/

Hi Everybody,
I have found a brand new Dog from a german guy!! I just received it.
I think I will use an edf unit with 8kg of thrust, is there anybody that just try before to convert this model?
I would like to work on it in the next days, but I have a first problem did someone know which is the size of the bolts that I have to buy to fix the wing to the fuselage? how do you fix yours?? do you have alternative method?
Cheers Luca

Hey Luca, congrats on picking up your Dog Sabre! Last year I flew my Dog on a 10kg turbine, it had a lot of power but was a little on the heavy side. This year I am planning on running it with an 8kg turbine for a bit lower wing loading and also that it's not really necessary to have the extreme top speed on a 'scale' jet. EDF tends to be a little bit less powerful than turbine though so I would be inclined to go with either a Jetfan 90 or better yet Jetfan 120 if it will fit. Here is a brand that I used before and found them to be powerful with a pleasing whooosh sound:
Jetfan 120

Jetfan 90

About the wings, I used two sets of captive nuts on mine, one in front of the fuel tank bulkhead and one at the rear next to the turbine. The wing would hold with one nut but for the minor weight penalty I figured the safety of having two was a good idea.

Hi there
Thank you Geoff, yesterday I have buyed all the servos except for the elevator, I haven't found the Jr servo to my local hobby shop, I don't know if ordered on line or find something similar.....
Meanwhile I have decided to get electric retracts so I probably will sell the Airspring retract that I have found inside the box.
I have seen you get Eflite retracts on your Dog, are they ok for that bird? I have seen thay are made for up 6kg airplane.
The wings just have a couple of captive nuts installed, but I have to change because they are located in the middle (like you say it's better get it on the side), and also because they have inch thread and it's difficult find the right bolts here in Italy, we have metric thread.
I will use nylon bolts so just in case of crash they collapse maybe saving the wings.
I have seen the Ejets products, very nice, but from their website I don't understand what is the right setup for 8kg of thrust,
Cheers Luca

Hi Luca,
In the manual they say to use the JR thin wing servos in the elevator - a lot of guys did that and they work fine. Due to availability and cost I used the Hitec mini servos instead (HS-5245MG), they are a pretty tight fit in there but you can not really tell when the jet is whizzing past in the air. They're also slightly higher torque than thin wing servos and work well in my case. Something to consider.
For the retracts, I found that the Eflight 60-120 nose retract was not up to the job of taking off / landing on grass. It would probably be fine for a tarmac runway. I landed up changing out the whole retract setup to the Electron retracts which are far more rugged and take a lot of abuse. This was a perfect choice for the nose wheel (in my case), but for the wings it introduced an unfavourable weight penalty. The whole wing assembly is very lightweight and I found that they break very easily if your retract is too strong/stiff. After several wing repair jobs I have decided to get a new set of wings made and go back to running the Eflite retracts (with Electron on the nose) - wish me luck!

Hi Geoff
Unfortunately I haven't start to build my dog yet, but I have found from hobby king an interesting set of retracts, i would like to try, they are cheap, but they can be used with plane up to 12 kg.
Hi Sidgates, I have no reservation with spring air retract, but I prefer electric retract. I think they are more simple to set, and more realistic than idraulic. :-)

Hi Geoff
unfortunately I haven't work on the Sabre yet, but I have written to Ejets for the 120mm fan , they told me in april will launch a brand new carbon fiber fan , they are still developing it so they doesn't give much info about it. I think I ll have a lot of time to finish mounting my saber before the edf arrives.
I have ordered the retract also, as soon they arrive a i'll make a review, if you are interested.
I hope to work on the saber in the week end.
have a good night
