Saab Viglen Info needed
Hi,
Im a newbie to ducted fan and am repairing a second hand saab viglen.
I have fitted a Os91 and ramtec fan to it and mainly need to know where the gear goes on the wings as i have never seen one of these jets before in my life and it dont have any wheels yet.
also can someone confirm that the flaps on the rear wings are ailerons and the front little wings are used as elevator, sorry to apear dumb but need to know these things.
Thanks in advance.

I used to have one of these a long long time ago with same power plant.
I remember that I locked down the canards and just used aileron/elevator mix, elevons, for controls on the rear.
It flew great and landings were slow and easy with the big delta wing. As far as the wheel location, I cant remember but Im pretty sure that the wheel wells were very close to the leading edge of the wing? Sorry it's been too long ago.

Viggen
Motofox,
I have a Jim Fox Viggen (my second). This model is full scale and the wheels are 8" back from the LE measured down the fuz centreline. The wingspan is 44" so if yours is different you can pro rata this data.
I flew my first one on Elevons with the canards used as flaps as per full size. If you use the flaps, go steady with the amount you dial in first time and keep some power on because they can bring the model to a stop!
I am just awaiting my new Wren engine to fly this model.
They are just superb aircraft.
Have fun.
John.

Motofox, I think that it is unlikely that you will have enough elevator control. I tried canard elevator control in combination with elevons and the improvement over elevons alone was useful but not huge. For this reason I never tried canard elevators alone on the Viggen but I have done on other canard models, and never with a lot of success.
Of course you could rig the model with the CG further back, accept a low static margin and get your control this way but loose the virtually unstalable nature of the Viggen.

John.

Viggen Pics
Robert,
Yes I have some pics, I have tried to post them but I have never had any success at posting pics on this forum. No matter how small I make the image I always get a message saying the size is too big.
If you want to send me a PM i will send them in a reply.

You do know what the military uses camo schemes for, don't you?

Yes, I had occurred to me. I think I will fly this model on a nice bright day, especially with the engine I plan to put in this model. It will be a pocket rocket!

John.

Hello John,
Nice job on your Viggen.
Do you have some more pictures of bottom side ?
I also plan to build the Viggen model, once I finally finish
my J-35 Draken.
Too bad that there is no more of these models around.
Regards,
Kristijan

Hello John,
I plan to power the Viggen with the Ramtec/OS 91 DF set.
The turbines are still little out of the my budget.
The J-35 Draken would be powered by Ducted fan at first, and
if everything ok, than I plan to power it with the Pulse Jet engine.
The Draken is fully scratch built, but there is no way to repeat this
with the Viggen.
It is much easier to buy the kit and save a lot of the nervs and time.
Here are some pics that I took when I started it.
I would take a mold from it, and the actual fuselage would be
GRP.

Kristijan Kljucaric

John,
Very nice indeed, the wren looks like an excellent chioce and should fly it nicely.
Is that the gear Jim Fox sells for his Viggen ?
And have you done any mods (scale wise) to the kit when you where building it.
also how are the wings attached to the fuse, or is the wing all 1 piece
Last Q, is there a top engine hatch as i can't see it.
Thanks
Robert
