Over 200 flights on the filters will keep an eye on them.

Hey Jim. Sorry to hear about this. As Bob said I had one fail the same way. Luckly for me it was on the ground in my F-15. I stopped using them also. I dont think they were designed for pressure. Glad it will fly agian. And you know we NEVER travel without popcorn balls.
Later buddy

I'm 99% sure that maxi-filter fits a 4mm festo line, as it looks identical to the one i'm using on my propane line.

For 6mm size filters, I have used in the past the Hangar-9 "pro" filters.

But typically, i just rely on the 3 filters i have on my fuel jug, and the UAT to filter out everything.

Jim,

Popcorn balls all around!

I'm also bringing my new Reaction X in Navy drone livery.

See you then!

Hi Jim

If you do a serach in RCU for these Festo filters, you'll see there are a lot of reports about cracks and leaks.

I have a couple and don't use them any more. From the pics, you even had a floating install of the filter, so no reason for cracks, right?

Some manufacturers still make their acessories package with these filters. I use aluminium filters.

Regards

Nuno

Hey Bob and Brian,
Thanks for the encouragement! Very frustrating to use the filter that came with the turbine in the configuration that was recommended and it almost costs me an airplane. Anyway, popcorn balls will make me feel better!

Nuno,
Yes, I found all that, many thanks. Unfortunatly I didn't think to look for this info before I had the problem. What the suppliers sell is supposed to work.

How many Indy 500's were lost due to the failure of a six dollar part? LOL!

Here are some picks of the aftermath:

Jim,

That's uglier than I originally thought.

I think Erik knows a good painter!

See you soon.

Yeah Bob, it's pretty ugly! Dan is pretty backed up with work so if possible I will get it flight worthy for the summer and paint it in the winter. We'll see.

Can't wait to see your Reaction X! My old Reaction 54 is still flying. Over 400 flights! Unfortunatly it isn't mine any more but it was by far the most enjoyable jet. It works every time.

See you soon,
Jim

If any one is using these filters they should stop , Festo says they are not designed for kerosene.
Use the metal ones or something that is designed for kero and pressure

Taken advice and removed my festo filter on the pressure side of the pump just want too know if problems are with the 6mm or 4mm filters. As I have always used the 6mm filters without any problems wonder if the problems are with the 4mm filters.

FWIW,

10 years 6 jets all AMT powered with 6mm Festo filters on suction side after UAT before manual shutoff then on to pump. I also have one inside the fuel jug as a clunk filter AND have one on the end of the fill line prior to fill nipple, this covers all bases and not one failure. The pressurized one will see so much pressure as witnessed by a BVM UAT expanding.

Gas station kero with Mobil 1 turbine oil mixed 1qt/4.75gals. Perhaps differing oils can play the part of attacking the seams????? .02

Seems to be related to the 4mm size, I have also been using the 6mm and tygon with no problems so far.
Use the 4mm in your gas lines.

Will resurrect this old thread on the Festo filters as was alerted by Reo on the seam splitting issues. Actually ran across some interesting information on the Festo website that the plastic festo filters are NOT to be used for a pressure application so on the intake side of any fuel pumps and they will work great. Would be interesting to see if the failed ones were on the pressure side as the full information is lacking in this forum.

Its worth noting that both the turbine manufacturers mentioned in this thread that use the these Festo filters show that they are to be fitted on the suction side of the pump. All the turbine manufactures that recommend filters on the pressure side of the pump use the alloy type filter.

Mine was mounted on the suction side. I just use the H9 Final Filter ever since.

And you had problems with the Festos leaking ? or your statement was that you only use them on the intake side... sorry not sure ?

I use these primarily between the tanks and the pump. I love the large flow rate they allow due to the 6 mm fittings. I also use JetCat aluminum ones in the 4 mm line just before entering the turbine.

So what is there available for the lines before the pump, something bigger than what fits in a 4 mm line??? Thanks.

Why use a filter between the UAT/air trap (which usually includes a filter) and the pump?

I no longer use this filter. I found they trapped a lot of air, that was difficult to completely remove. I only use the straight inline aluminium ones.

Chad, There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with these filters, they are excellent BUT they are designed to handle gaseous VACUUMS at 0 to -.9 bar !
That they withstand pressure use with hydrocarbons (which may attack the sealant) show just how well made they are !

Even if it is used on the suction side you may well be overpressuring it on refuelling (depends on fuel system layout, of course)

I used them for many years and never had an issue. I think it was always on the suction side......
