Default New Product - CAT's (Composite Air Trap) preview

Here are three new CAT's, a composite high flow air trap designed to be easy to mount, totally functional, economical, tough and good looking!

Here are the specs:

Size S - 80ml (2.6oz) weight 30g (1.1oz)
Size M - 130ml (4.4oz) weight 40g (1.4oz)
Size L - 260ml (8.8oz) weight 88g (3.1oz)

These weights all include the ply mounting plate and O ring straps (each CAT contains two sets of O rings, one for spares)

The CAT's are made from West Systems resin and cloth, end caps are FR4 epoxy board. Fittings are quality brass units and each CAT is supplied with feed and supply barbs of the same ID/OD, while the fill barb is a smaller ID/OD to help
prevent over pressure during filling of the fuel system.

The CAT is assembled using Aeropoxy and fully pressure tested. Due to the construction these CAT's are very strong yet light, and will resist wall collapse under the most demanding conditions.

Supplied with the CAT is a cnc cut three piece ply mounting plate and four O rings. The slots for the O rings are designed in such a way so that they remain attached to the mounting plate (one end) after the CAT has been released, helping
prevent any fiddly juggling to re-fit.

Olivier will be fully testing and reporting on his thorough findings in RCJI shortly. If in the meantime anyone wants to know more please feel free to PM me. Pricing will be on my website shortly.

They look very nice Marc, but they also look expensive. I'm guessing they will be more than a UAT?

I hope to keep them around 15% less than the current average market prices (UK based) including the mounting plate.

What a nice looking piece of kit, I could almost be tempted to start using an air trap just for the bling. LOL

Looks nice. What's inside them doing the business? Plain pipe, pleated paper filter, cloth tea bag, other?

Harry, inside is an optimised pleated paper fuel filter, chosen for the simple effectiveness of this device and the large surface area it offers for a compact unit.
The filter for any given unit is fitted to an aluminium shaft which has a hole down its centre which is the same bore as the ID of the final brass barbed fitting to avoid any restrictions.

Second picture below is a custom made extra large volume hopper/CAT unit of 450cc, this is being tested for use in a jet running the BF300 turbine.

Marc

Great to see a slightly different approach and a very neat compact unit.

Ali happy to fix you up with a few to 'test', let me know what kit/turbine you had in mind.

John your research into these fuel filters and their effectiveness made the decision easier ;-)

Cheers Duncan.

I will bring these along to Bickley Jets on Sunday for anyone who wants to have a closer look, might offer a few up as raffle prizes if the organisers feel they are worth winning?

Harry, inside is an optimised pleated paper fuel filter,
Excellent, I have had much success with them since jgwright did his magazine article about them a few years ago. You don't get the purging issues as with the cloth bag type. I can see these CATs becoming my standard fit on new builds. One thought - with a typical air trap you can see through the plastic and see at the end of a flight if it has been filling with air, giving warning of a possible leak/problem. Though the CATs look opaque, you can often still see the fuel level clearly enough through fibreglass - is that the case with these?

I take it they're available to order now then? What's the delivery time?

I was about to order a MAP mini bubble trap but might try one of yours instead. The prices are very good

EDIT: Could you post the unit dimensions?

Guys, just for information.
Marc have developped the concept with my advice on some matters. This product follows the "unrestricted flow" philosophy and I consider it as the next generation UAT.
Here are the main points:
.High flow capacity lines ( 4,7 mm inner diameter everywhere for the big units, not restriction)
.High flow paper air separator/filter with big diameter inner tube
.Non deformable walls with a shape as compact as possible ( as close as possible to a sphere )
.Transparent wall
.Large capacity available for high flow engines. This will ensure enough air retaining capacity for a long enough time ( ie 30 seconds @ full thrust on the BF-300 )
.Possibility to have two supply lines into the CAT for plumbing saddle tanks without a hopper tank.
.Easy fitting in the model through proper mounting tabs. Easy removal with oring fasteners.

PLEASE do not use normal tygon lines with the big units since they are meant to be plugged with large XL tygons for maximum flow...
