Maiden lessons learned and thrust angle.
Ok, let me try this again.
On my maiden I had a hard time keeping her level with one click here and one click there. I was expecting a little ballooning, and I didn't see it much. I relate it to nerves and expo. So I thought.....after putting her on the stand and flipping her over, the damage was revealed...
1. right flap had two broken hinges
2. left flap had a cracked control horn on flap
3. right wing sheeting overlapping flap, cracked in along the whole trailing edge of flap area... PUCKER FACTOR 9.5
At this time I'm hit with reality.....maiden went well considering the damages. This could have been really bad. This is totally my fault from being excited to fly her. Almost cost me the plane...So what did I learn? Soon after drilling out the hinges I replaced them in the exact same holes as before and when I looked closer, the details emerged. The flaps on both sides were never properly installed. Hinge placement was off and both sets of flaps sat with gaps in the wing. The right was worse because it had a down slope towards the aileron. The builder in me couldn't take it. So I cut them all off and drilled them all out again. Filled all holes and started over. This time they sat level and flush. Tucked in nice they sat well and in the up position, looked great.
Test flights after were a totally different aircraft. She was rock solid and flew on rails. Wide open throttle she was flat and smooth. no drifting, rolling or ballooning. Fortunately on my plane, the thrust mod was already done. I just plugged my turbine in and went with it. The following pics will show the best I can of the K80G nozzle and alignment of the rails. AGAIN, I did NOT build this. The answer may shock you. But it is what it is......and it works awesome for my plane. Pic one will show the gauge next to the turbine nozzle at 0 Degrees. The rest is just what it shows. On the nozzle and on the rail angle. They seem to match. Hope this helps with yours. Good luck with the maiden Helihover....

Hello There
I would assume that the correct way to achieve an accurate reading, would be to measure the angle from the center line, through the fuselage? So from the center line through the fuselage,to the rails, where the turbine is mounted. Congratulations on your maiden flight.
Regards
Craig

Dblex - thanks a bunch. Really, really, helpful - and much apprechiated.
I had to rebuild my mounting rails for the turbine, so this gives me a great comparison in order to check my angles.
If I have some kind of luck I just might maiden it during the holidays - but this being Norway it is a serious risk of snow and freezing temps

Hello
Just home after an amazing day at the field here in Norway. Had maiden flight on the Turbinator today, and wow did it fly nice. Take-offs were on rails, in the air it was just plain fun, and the landings really is a walk in the park.
Used the exact throws as posted by Todd in this thread and it just flies awesome
Power are from a KingTech 80 which is more than adequate for this jet.
Thanks to all of you who have contributed in this tread - it is greatly apprechiated.
Helihover,

Turbinators hold value pretty well....don't look for someone to give one away. I searched for mine and paid a decent penny for it. They fly like a 50cc with a turbine strapped to it!!! And break down awesome for transport. Well worth it..
i am am hearing good things about the pilot dolphin....its on my list "If" the turbinator doesnt make a comeback!!!!

Hello:
do you see my tanks ? I made 2 versions of tanks for the Turbinator, in 3L and 2,6L of capacity.
The cost of tank is 60€ and the post to USA is over 25€ aprox.
Regards from Spain.
Carlos.

Do your tanks have a baffle? The stock tank is quite long and limits aerobatics at the end of the flight to avoid sucking air due to exposed clunk.
How much shipped to 92807 california?

Larry, did you mount the engine rail angles like the plans call for. Or did you angle them more like the arf kit update shows? And your plane looks great.
It has been a long hard winter here in North Eastern PA. I spent a lot of time in my workshop SRATCH building the Ziroli Turbinator. It is now finished and it's time to install everything. Maiden should be in a few weeks. Hope everyone likes the colors....

After reading a lot about the thrust angles, I dropped the rear of the rail 1/4". Let's hope it wasn't too much. I won't know until I fly it. What confused me, was the incident reading of the horizontal stabilizer. Nick said the range was 1/2º negative to 3/4º positive. When I checked the wing incidence, it was 1.75º positive, so I set the horizontal stabilizer to 1º positive. I won't know how much trim it will require until I fly it. Both wings have 2º washout. I am a real good friend of Ron Stahl and he told me to power it with my P-80SE and I shouldn't have any problems....

I would love to have smoke on mine, but I don't think there is room anywhere to put an extra tank, much less one big enough to make it worth it.
Here is a clip from yesterday after the rain passed and flying under a rainbow at Austin Radio Control Association in Austin Texas.

To add smoke to mine, I would cut a hatch in the bottom where high horse has indicated to have decent access to that area. It looks like two 14oz tanks would fit in there, as long as I re-route a few lines and such. Since that area is far ahead of the CG, how much in flight trim adjustment do any of you think would need to be done as the tanks empty?
