Default Maidened my small Xtremejets Viper!! Video

Hi guys!
During our jet meeting last week, I finally maidened my Xtremejets/SM small Viper.
The Viper can be delivered as an EDF or turbine version, mine is set up with the Wren 44 Gold
turbine, a Futaba FASST 12 channel system and the nice Xtremejets U/C.
This model is painted out of the mold, and I really love the color scheme! I have Hitec HS 5245MG
on ailerons and flaps, and the thin Graupner DS 3288 BB MG on elevators and rudder.
The plane has a slight negative stance on the ground - this made for a quite scary takeoff,
as the nose down attitude combined with takeoff flaps made it stick to the ground hard until it
leaped in the air, almost stalling, first to one side, then to the other!!
My hands reacted before my brain, and suddenly, the plane was flying perfectly!!

I flew for 5 minutes, just getting to know the model, the Wren is plenty of power for the Viper, and
it is a joy to fly and land (with full flaps)
I will cut a couple of millimeters off the main legs to give the plane a 1 degree nose up attitude,
and I am looking very much forward to flying her again and get to know the model better!
The takeoff weight is about 17 lb.

Thanks!

I don't know what was more unbelieveable,
1) the great paint job,
2) the double knife edge recovery, or
3) shorts and t-shirts in Norway.

Wow! Good job,

Jim

Thanks, guys - and Jim, this was our summer day!! (You know, the one day of the year when we have temperatures above
freezing and almost no snow!! Can you believe that we had 86 degrees on that day!!! Amazing!! And DelGato - a double
knife edge immediately after takeoff will now be part of my regular program!!!

Thanks!

TorI can't believe a 44 gold is all thats pushing that jet. Does it have good rudder response?? Great flying and a nice little jet. Thanks for posting.

Does Skymaster include spare underwear when you buy that plane? Nice save.

Seems all Skymaster Vipers have a nasty snap tendancy with application of elevator. This was the demise of my large viper. Strange characteristic for a plane with such light wing loading.

Glad to see the only thing that you managed to sacrafice is a pair of shorts.

Thanks, guys -
I am modifying the plane right now, I want a longer nose leg so the plane has a slight nose-up attitude, and I will
ff without takeoff flaps. Apart frrom that, I am very happy with the plane and looking forward to doing some more
maneuvers next time. The response seemed very good at the maiden, and as you can see, aileron control is good
(and instant !!)

Congrats Tor, the colors look really sharp. Not sure I've seen one before in that scheme. Did you add any lights, etc or is it pretty much stock?

Thanks, I just love that color scheme. I didn't add anything yet, I was a little concerned about the
weight, but after a few flights to adjust everything I will add some lights for good looks!

Hi Hector - long time no see! Maybe I'll bring this plane to my new place in Florida, from there it's just a short hop down to you!
Say hello to the other guys for me! [8D][8D]

ORIGINAL: bigplumbs

That take off speed was quite fast for that to stall like that
Speed is not relevant. Stalling is only dependant upon angle of attack and bears no relation to speed. A wing stalls when it reaches it's critical angle of attack which is typically 14 degrees. In this instance the pilot rotated, all be it at a rather high speed, and induced a dynamic stall due to exceeding the critical angle of attack of that swept wing.

VJ's, in my experience, handle fine and can be slowed down nicely for a stable approach.

Like I have stated before, the plane originally has a nose down attitude on the ground, and combined with the 20%
takeoff flaps this made the plane unwilling to lift off. More and more up elevator was added until the plane jumped
off the runway, immediately getting a very high angle of attack and stalling a wing. This has now been corrected by
extending the nose leg until the plane has a 1 degree positive angle on the ground, and it will be tested the coming
weekend. The stall had nothing to do with the plane's flying characteristics.
I had the same problem with the small Grumania SU27, almost impossible to take off with the negative stance, again
the answer was to lengthen the nose leg - problem gone and the plane took off and flew great after the modification.
