Default A123 Question

Just recently picked up a turn key Kingcat for a friend. The previous owner told me it has A123 cells installed. My question is, are A123 cells the same as LiFp. I have an Orbitz charger that has this symbol. Is this the right one to charge on or do I need another charger?

Thanks
Billy

Never heard of LeFp they are normally called LiFi or LiFe sometimes called PO4, go to the "A123 systems" web site that will tell you all you want to know about charging these cells.

Does the Orbit show the voltage per cell on the display when you pick the LiFb setting? The voltage per cell should be 3.3 v.

Try this site as well: www.hangtimes.com. Look for the A123 FAQ page.

A wealth of battery info for all types and has several explainations of how to charge A123s with different equipment.

I use an FMA Multi 4 to charge my A123s so my experience is limited to that. I'm sorry I can't specifically answer your question about the Orbitz charger.

No voltage read on the Orbit. Usually reads after I plug a battery in then press charge, but i didn't want to do anything till I was sure. Pretty sure it said Lifp. i know it didn't say LiFe. It's the third battery type after LiPo, Li ion

Oh, I thought you typed LiFb. Li-Fp is for A123's I believe. Lithium ferrophosphate I think. I would try and go to Orbit's site and download the manual just to be sure. If you do charge them, a two cell pack should peak at 7.2 volts.

Billy,

Double check it. It should have been life. Orbit chargers will do A123's.

Hi Billy, I have the Orbit Pocketlader and I use it to charge the genuine A123 Rx packs without a problem. Yes it does say LiFP on the Orbit and that's the correct mode for A123.

You just have to be careful about monitoring voltage of the battery. It does not work like a LiPo. You can't tell how much capacity is left with just checking voltage. You have to see how much charge (mAh) you are putting back after each flight and fly/charge accordingly.

Question, I know they say no regulators are necessary with A123's. What if I have analog servos (for retracts and brakes)? Do those still require a regulator?

Thanks,
David

No regulators on mine. No issues.
(You may need to be sure the servo can handle greater than 4.8V. Some of the very small one have problems with that)

Thats what I fear, my retract micro servo. I may as well regulate it to 5.0V just to be on the safe side.
