Hi Dom, i receive my spar, it is too big, the original spar on my small f4 have a 12.7 mm diameter and they send me a 12.9mm diameter. I wonder if they use different size for the same plane. Do you have a 12.7 mm diameter on yours.

Hi Mike.
Well this sucks.
When I got my new spar, it looked the same. I just measured mine and the spars that came with the kit measure .466 diameter and the replacement spar measures .471 diameter and does not fit in the wing! I will e-mail John at Skymaster right now.

I really don't understand what's going on there, They produce beautiful and very scale jet, don't they have any specs for what they use or they just use what's available. It look like the small f-4 have 4 different spar diameter ?? It should be a lot simplier than that. It cost a lot to ship the wrong part 2 and 3 time.

This is ridiculous. I was sent two spars for The F-4 and neither fit.
I was also sent a "longer" Tube for my Hawk wing that was exactly the same length[X(]
With all the problems between both the F-4 and the Hawk I would say I have been more than patient. I hope this gets resolved quickly!!!
I just e-mailed John and Anton at Skymaster and Patty from BVM. I will let you know as soon as I hear something.

Dom, they really should hire you to analyse their plane (prototype) and find what should be improve, make some ''part list'' so when there is a missing part or a wrong part, you can get it the first time you ordered it ( calculate 2 month).
I Love their plane, but like you , i want to get all the part when i build it, and i want them to fit, minor modification , i don't care, as long as it fit.
It is not that complicated

Hi Dom,
I'm glad I went with FB for my next jet..
It just seems like alot of hassles with SM just to get the right part the first time..

Mine is 5 thousandths too big. Can I sand mine down? Will that splinter or weaken the spar?

I think it would be OK to sand them down, especially since they are really close to fitting. However, that seems like a lot of work on our parts for something that should have been right from the start!

I already heard back from John at Skymaster. Man that was fast!!! He said the supplier of the carbon rods sent them a slightly improper size and he is asking them to replace the shipment. He will then send me out a new spar after test fitting them into a wing at the factory.
Thanks for the support John (at Skymaster)

Carbon fiber rods are manufactured in a process called pultrusions. Pultruded shapes have very straight fibers cured at high temperature resulting in high fiber to resin ratios and very stiff parts. CST carbon rods contain no fillers - ONLY continuous fibers. Most diameters are available up to 98" long. Dimensional tolerances are +/- 0.005" and weight tolerances +/- 2-5%.
The above quote was pulled from the CST site. As you can gather from that quote, there will be tolerance differences from rod to rod and even on the same rod if measure along it's length. I have sanded to fit c/f rods before with no issues. One thing I did do was to varnish the rod with thin C/A after sanding.

You can get carbon fibre tubes from Germany that have a very close dimensional tolerance.

I bought some ground rod and tube that was very accurate.

Hi Guys.
I did ask for new spars and John was very quick to reply. Here was his first response:

RE: Maj. Woody's X-Treme Jets F-4C Phantom
Then John sent this to me with the following pictures and asked if I wanted him to send this spar. I told John I would get back to him regarding the spars. I have been too busy with work and my Hawk to think about the F-4 right now. I may just try to sand down the second one he sent that is 5 thousands too big. The one in his picture looks undersized in spots. Mine needs to be .466. What would you guys do?
Hi Dom
Please check photos of carbon rod supplier recently sent.Because of tolerance, the rod can not be same of diameter all the way. Please advise if it is ok to send.
Best regards
John

RE: Maj. Woody's X-Treme Jets F-4C Phantom
Personally, I would just sand/lap the one you already have... especially if it has a pretty consistent diameter along the length of the rod. Be interesting to know if the tube that the spar slips into is of a constant I/D. It would take a snap gauge and micrometer to accurately check for that. The entry of the tube may be smaller than say the middle or the end of the tube

RE: Maj. Woody's X-Treme Jets F-4C Phantom
I remember years ago when I received my Great Planes Patty Wagstaff ARF, the aluminum Wing Tube would not fit in the Tube Socket. Great Planes told everyone who had this problem to glue sandpaper to a dowell, chuck it up in a hand drill, and sand the tube so that the Wing Tube would fit. The alternative was for them to send replacement wings, since replacement aluminum Wing Tubes was not an option. They were reluctant to send out replacement wings, as well.
I sanded my Tube Sockets rather than spend time trying to get replacement wings.
I would think SM would have equipment capable of accurately sanding the Carbon Fiber Spars to the specs for your Spar Sockets, assuming your Spar Sockets have a constant ID.

Well based on my experience with the Hawk, I need to make some changes to this F-4 before I fly it. Step one will be to replace all the plastic servo arms with aluminum. I will document my progress here. I also want to check my rudder linkage out since it is the same geometry as the Hawk. The F-4 rudder however feels much more solid than the Hawks did. Not really any play except for some servo lash.
