Another FYI. The other Mil Spec which you can run is 7808. Both 7808 and 23699 work fine. Routinely 7808 is what BP2380 is.

John,
BP advertizes 2380 as MIL-PRF-23699....not MIL-L-or MIL-PRF-7808.

DTE Light does not posess a MIL-SPEC.... It is not used by the military in Turbine Aircraf Engines and is not a advertised Gas-Turbine oil... From what I have been told...

Concur...23699 is what it says on the label of my 2380

BTW, walked by a maintenance shop at my airline yesterday...cases and cases of BP 2197, some Mobil, too, but I didn't note the type. Waaay more BP.

Hey, I have an idea - everybody just use what you and your manufacturer are happy with! Or, if you can't think for yourself, be peer pressured into something a friend uses! Or, continue to analyze the topic to the nth degree while I go flying! There's a FIRE in there! And it's real HOT! That oil, whatever it is, is BURNING! If you're worried about coking up the inside call your turbine's Doctor of Internal Medicine after you put some flights on it to see how your innards are doing and if it even matters on our lifecycles.

Just kidding, carry on class

Any comments on shelf life on Turbine oils? I have found some unopened cans of Aeroshell 500 that have been in my garage for 5-6 years. Here in North Carolina, my Garage gets up to 95 in the summer and down to 20 in the winter and so did the oil (ooops). Yeah I know Oil has been around for "thousands of years" in its original state but just want to be sure it is shelf stable since I have a NIB Jetcat 120SX that I am going to start running soon and fresh oil at 8-14 bucks is cheaper than $500 factory check up.

I am also looking at the Mobile DTE Lite as an alternative since I always seem to get the fuel on me somehow. What are your thoughts guys? Scrap the oil and go fresh or use the 3 qts I have and go fly? Thanks in advance for replies.

Dear Kenneth,

5 to 6 years old is not a problem for the turbine oils stored in a closed can.
Stay with the Aeroshell 500, Mobil DTE Lite oil is not recommanded by Jetcat.

When you are flying turbine jets, the oil cost is peanut compared to a factory repair.

Regards,

Alain

Do they state anywhere not to use it?

Has anyone asked them?

Are they using different bearings to everyone else?

Hello,
thanks for your Message. I hope you had a good Start in 2010 as well!
When Mobil Oil DTE Light is a fully syntethic Oil you can use it for sure with JetA1 (Kerosene). Please check.
When using Petroleum as Fuel, we strongly recommend Aeroshell500 as Oil.

Hope it will answer to your question.

Interesting response about Mobile DTE........so I guess it can be used as long as you mix it with Kero. As far as where I live, Kerosene is VERY abundant. If you search 10 gas stations, at least 7 will have a Kero pump. It is the "red dyed" tax whatever stuff but still K-1 Kero. Oh well we shall see what the wallet says.

This is from BP's product data sheet on 2197...not sure about Aeroshell, but I would guess it would be similar.

Storage & Shelf Life
• The shelf life of BP Turbo Oil 2197 can extend beyond ten years when stored in original,
unopened quart cans under recommended storage conditions, i.e. in a well ventilated and
covered area away from extreme heat and moisture etc. 55-gallon drums and 5-gallon pails
have an expected shelf life of three years minimum.

So what makes a Jetcat different from all the other turbines, they all use GRW bearings?

Mobil II sometimes looks dark. Send it to me and I will test it for you and submit a test report.

Another oil you can use is pacemaker T32 from citgo. Cost $40 for a 5 gallon pale. It has the EXACT specs (clone) of mobile DTE lite!! I have a few friends who already used it over the past year with no problems in jet centrals, kingtechs, and jetcat.
