Turbine Oil Choice
I am just getting ready to order some turbine oil.
seems like The Oil Store has good prices.
Does anyone have experience with The Oil Store as a source or other source recommendations?
looking at what Turbine oll they sell it appears that the marketing department talks about "low coking" properties of some of their oils.
so, i've confirmed that Aeroshell 500, 555 or 560 are all ok. (JetCat motor)
can anyone here share their acutal experience on different "low coking" oils?
thanks

RE: Turbine Oil Choice
Joe,
I've been using Mobil DTE Lite in my JetCats for almost 3 years.
It's non-carcinogenic and cost about $19.00 a gallon in the gallon containers.
the 5 gallon pails are cheaper yet.

RE: Turbine Oil Choice
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to buy several cases of BP 2197 from a damaged freight seller in Salt Lake City, Utah. It cost me $5.00 per quart!
I still have 48 quarts left, and will use it up before I spring for anything else. BP 2197 is the latest and greatest turbine oil from BP.
In the last 14 years, I have used Exxon 2380 (now BP 2380), Aeroshell 500, Mobil Jet II, Castrol, and some USMC issue oil that goes in the FA-18's at Miramar.
If you are going to use turbine oil, make sure it conforms to MIL-PRF-23699 (any letter suffix).
When I was using 2380, I suffered no "coking" problems at all. I think that this problem is over stated.
Aside from the cost, the only thing I find really wrong with turbine oil, is that it is a proven carcinogen. Should you choose to use turbine oil, don't wash your hands with it or drink it, and you will be okay.
Mobil DTE lite is not carcinogenic, and one hell of allot less expensive than turbine oil.

RE: Turbine Oil Choice
intersting.
does that affect the JetCat Warrenty?
does that affect the JetCat Warrenty?
Official line - Ze vill use ze recommended oil or ze warranty vill be verboten!
Unofficial line - it works fine & is recommended by Wren anyway & lots of people use it in all brands of turbines.
It would take considerable time & money to test alternative oils for long periods in their engines & they don't seem
to be prepared to do that when 'jet' oil is what they started with works fine.
My opinion: If I was recommending an oil for use in my product in a way the oil manufacturer does not recommend because it causes serious & documented health problems I would be looking at altenatives quick smart before the lawyers come knocking.
I use the DTE light oil with no problems. - John.

RE: Turbine Oil Choice
This is what it looks like: you can figure the rest out from here. I have used 5 gallons of it, all motors have been back to the factory after 25 hours on each - they like it. 32oz per 5 gallons. I run other stuff if I am at an event and run out or if i'm bumming
I like to sniff and sniff and sniff my exhaust - huff it really - over and over and over again and I just can't do that unless I run DTE!

Go crazy Danno!
BTW - the 5 gallon container is $8x.xx so, it's about $4/qt. AND you can whiff it!

All the above..... But more than not.... whatever is cheapest of the brand name oils. LOL! Oil-store.com has Shell, BP, Mobile etc... its a one use deal........ I know its important but I think as long as you use something well known its a one shot deal. Through the bearings one time and out the tailpipe!!! The prices fluctuate regularly so buy accordingly. I always liked the Mobile cause its dark and you can't confuse it with kero that has no oil in it. Flame on!!

RE: Turbine Oil Choice
AeroShell 500 on the way.
I think i will try the Mobil DTE Lite next time-i cannot believe how inexpensive it is-weird. also its normal application seems to be lubrication in recirculating cooling systems for machine tools, steam and other turbo machinery.
when i was still at the airline, the MX guys offered to just give me 5 gal from their 55gal drums the used to service the AE3007 A1/3 motors on our planes. should have taken them up on it.
Tim, how has the weather been down by you? I am really hating the rainy Chicago weather!!
great info from all. sounds like if it is quality, namebrand type oil (turbine or this DTE stuff) its good to go.
now i just need to go burn some.

RE: Turbine Oil Choice
I used to use CASTROL TTS but I noticed that that oil caused some bearing stiction on startup causing less than perfect starts ( the starter lanbored to spin the turbine up properly) then I switched to DTE light... SAE10 (ISO 32) and this all went away. Also the carcinogen level is much lower with DTE... I have used it in the following turbines with "0" bearing failures
I use 5% in all...
SIMJET AES 3000 and NEXUS
Jet Central FALCON
Wren 44 TP. 54, 75, 120 and 160
the 44TP is quite a high revving turbine as it the Wren 54... no problems whatsoever
