having turned into a product support thread, I am making a new one about the original purpose:
Giving the users of this system a tool to diagnostic their system and a database to compare their system performance with others.

Please, if you have any general support question, use the other thread. If you want to post your datalink results of if you have any RF link quality doubt or question, use this thread. I am looking for as much feedback as possible. Thank you.

I am also finishing a comprehensive article about Weatronics advanced programming and tips that will publish around the end of the year.

First of all the method to be able to display meaningful data about the Rf link quality.



After the flight, download the data to your computer.

Open GigaControl 2.50
Go to the the Nav View window.

Configure Nav View as follows:

Right panel upper window Rx data ( RSSI1, RSSI2, Frames1, Frames2 ):

Erase all the data on the right panel.
Hit the + button and select the following:
'receiver', then RSSI 1rx, then RSSI 2rx, then frame rx1, then frame rx2.



Right panel lower window Tx data ( RSSI1, RSSI2, Frames1, Frames2 ):

Hit the + button and select ' diagram below'.
Select again the + button and the following:
'transmitter' then RSSI 1tx, then RSSI 2tx, then frame tx1, then frame tx2.




Left panel alfa numeric values and error codes:

Right click on the title box and select 'hide all columns'



Then right click again on the title bar and select 'receiver' then Frame rx 1, then Frame rx 2, then status rx ( optionally Failsafe ).
Do the same thing with 'transmitter' then frame tx 1, frame tx 2, then status tx



You should end up with the following display:



You can now load the nav file by hitting the 'open' button and selecting the file target.
The data log will open automatically.
Center the graph to the flight zone ( you will recognize it since the RSSI start to drop when the plane goes away from you and the curve is like a "bathtub") and zoom it to get rid of the post and pre flight crap.

Select the wrench button on the right panel and select 'Y-axis scaling' then 'scale possible values'




This option will enable you to evaluate the values compared to their maximum. It is very important to select this option otherwise the graph will not be meaningful since the scale would change every time you move into the graph: the program is configured to show the 'visible values' by default.

If you see a zone of the flight that you want to evaluate more precisely, then center it on the dotted line, dragging the horizontal button. Then left click on the dotted line. This will automatically pull the associated line on the left alfa numeric panel and highlight it. Note that these lines are only recorded every second on the tx side with the micro receivers. The big receivers can record at a much higher rate on the rx side ( rx micro sd card ).

In the example below I have zoomed on an event in flight 2 and clicked on the dotted line:




The line at 317s is automatically displayed in the left panel and highlighted. I then just have to read the values...

Note that the RSSI values can fluctuate between -110 dBm and -8 dBm, -8 dBm being the highest value ( best reception ).

There are 100 frames per second of which 45 source frames ( PPM mode, PCM modes would give you 25 to 35 source frames ) . Anything below 100 means that you have lost some of the frames( like the A,B,L,R data on the Spektrum flight log ). The control frames being more than doubled in PPM and quadrupled in PCM ( 100 frames transmitted for 45 / 35 source frames ) the RF link is obviously very redundant.

The error codes are shown on the data window for both the Tx and the Rx. A new very nice feature of Gigacontrol 2.50 is that when you stop your mouse arrow on an error code for a while, you'll see a comment window popping up with the code description. So no need to decipher the code with the separate code list anymore .


PLEASE send the logs with the proper formatting. Here is an example of a log screen shot that was sent to me for analysis. It is completely meaningless because the person did not select the "scale possible values" option:

The idea is to use the same data formatting for everyone. Look at your configured Navview screen and fillout the following text that you can copy/past in a new post:

Here is an example taken from my early flight tests two years ago:

No failsafe
4 losses of feedback communication ( 136/168 events ) for a total of 7 seconds


Lowest RSSI 1 tx: -99,5 dBm
Lowest RSSI 2 tx: -92 dBm
Lowest frame tx1: 9
Lowest frame tx2: 9

Average RSSI tx values: -87 dBm

This will make it very easy for every one to compare the results and will give a massive feedback to all the users.

The last flight was obviously much worse than the other ones in terms of RF link. However I did not notice it during the flight ( no failsafe frames, not red LED blinking, no slow down on the control )

These results are on the lower quality side of the average Weatronic operation. Interesting to show since I flew the phoenix hardcore with this setup and never noticed any control link quality reduction in flight ( 270 mph top speed ).

Lowest frame rx1: 10

Average RSSI rx values: -78 Db
Failsafe 0
losses of feedback communication ( 136/168 events ) for a total of 23 seconds.

Unfortunately, I have no Tx data for this flight since the Rx memory card was used.
Note that this is a very interesting subject since it has a lot of carbon fiber in the fuselage. Although the results show a weak control link, it is still acceptable.

Please Lance, send me the logs of your flights at the JWM for analysis.

Posting here for a guy who lost his plane. I did not see anything wrong in the RF part of it. Just sudden loss of signal, with no loss of frames, but continuous signal strength reduction.

Posted log file, by changing the extension from NAV to PDF. You can download and changed it back to NAV to load in Gigacontrol. Uses version 2.51

Here is the analysis of the log:

Lowest RSSI 1 rx: -77,5 Db
Lowest RSSI 2 rx: -71.5 Db
Lowest frame rx1: 95
Lowest frame rx2: 78

Lowest RSSI 1 tx: -136 Db
Lowest RSSI 2 tx: -136 Db
Lowest frame tx1: 0
Lowest frame tx2: 0

Average RSSI rx values: -65 Db
Failsafe 0
No losses of feedback communication until the end of the log

This is actually an excellent result.
The loss of RSSI is normal. It is the beginning of the "bathtub curve" actually the field strength is stable at normal levels at the end of the recording.
The recording capability is lost at 218 s due to the model being on the ground ( mass plane effect ).
Even the Tx log is quite good till this time stamp.

I have zoomed the log a bit to show the end better.

Your attachments are ok.
Good frames for #2 drop immediately upon range test. However they start to improve later within the range test. Were you rotating or moving the model? You signal strength for #2 is also lower at the start and then matches the one for #1 later in the test.
Maybe #2 is being masked by some carbon or fuel tanks?

Thanks Edgar,

We did rotate a bit through the test about 90 degrees. The fwd antenna is up against the top skin fwd of the cockpit hatch and the aft antenna is 2 inches above the edge of the hatch, above the brace for the inlets (which I thought would be a good place..)

Hello.

Here is the analysis of the log:

Lowest RSSI 1 rx: -90 Db
Lowest RSSI 2 rx: -92.5 Db
Lowest frame rx1: 62
Lowest frame rx2: 35

Lowest RSSI 1 tx: -85 Db
Lowest RSSI 2 tx: -78 Db
Lowest frame tx1: 89
Lowest frame tx2: 97

Average RSSI rx values: -85 Db
Failsafe 0
No losses of feedback communication until the end of the log




I would try moving the antenna 2 to get better results in all orientations.
What was the Tx modulation setup? PPM or PCM ?

That one was pcm I think, I changed to ppm now.

The funny thing about that is that ant 2/(rec 2) is located up inside the canopy, mounted vertical, above te inlet brace.

I thoguth that would be a great location....I checked my extension and that seems to be ok..

I am wondering where to move the antenna to, thinking I might just keep it in the nose 90 degrees from the other one...

hi Oli,

When you have a moment could you give me your thoughts on these files. log #33 is short, the turbine shut down while on the ground taxiing to the runway. GSU said Failsafe as reason for shut down. The concerning part is that the jet was no more than 30 feet away from me with no obstructions.

Log 34 is the flight immediately after the shutdown and all went well
