At least your Lightning has the correct squadron markings, so it's all good

Man oh man...what a great show this turned out to be. The weather was kind of a bummer part of today and Friday, but yesterday and Thursday it was great. The winds were kind of up there, with yesterday being a 90 degree at 10 to 20 MPH most of the day but everyone flew and flew and flew. I even broke out the Bolicat and flew it as well as the Lightning and Tucano. Man...it was fun! Today we got a good 1/2 day and then the rain returned for a couple of hours. Pretty much everyone was still there today so we got a bunch of flying in before and after the rain.

A big thanks go out to Pablo for organizing this event, it really turned out to be awesome. The House of Power hobby shop (Rob Lynch's new store) was the major sponsor for the event, which included CASH PRIZES to the trophy winners...which is a first as far as I can remember. The top prize was $750 to the Top Gun winner (Ali of course!), Chuck Storrie and his A-10 took Best of Show and $500 and everyone else got $333 each for the other awards. There was also an auction with some great stuff from Horizon and BVM to round out the afternoon.

Glen Grant, the CD did a wonderful job running the show, along with his wife and crew from the 332nd who ran the kitchen all weekend with great burgers, dogs and chicken wings. I can't even guess how many pilots were there for the meet, but it was a bunch for a first time show. The weather scared some guys away because of the cross winds but because of the layout of the field and the direction of the wind, on landing it was really no big deal. There was so much terrific flying done by so many people I'm not even going to try to start mentioning who did what...just wait for the article to come in RCJI in a few months and that will cover it.

Pablo, Glen, The Horizon and BVM Gangs and of course House of Power Hobbies (http://www.houseofpowerhobbies.com) ...thanks a million for sponsoring the 1st Annual Markham Park Jet Rally...it was simply a blast!

H.O.P. went overboard on the awards and gifts, WOW! and that 50% off BVM bid.... i wish i wasn't broke

nice to have a jet event back is SoFlo, i had a great time and really got to practice my x-wind landings... not to shabby

fun to watch Ali and Pablo fly O.P.P. non stop.. HA!

I give props to the announcer who was on da mike the non stop with plenty of details and facts for the crowd, and that ain't easy

Glen always a good MC!

Pablo thanks for bringing a jet event back home

Great job Glenn and crew!
Met a lot of new faces.
...and that announcer was like a walking history lesson on jets/RC. I've never seen anyone spittin' facts nonstop for hours like that!
Glad to be back South,
Kirt

Well I really want to thank everyone who made it out. I wish the weather would have been a little better. But we still had a great time. A huge thanks to the sponsors. Especially House of Power Hobbies, BVM jets, Horizon Hobby, TAM jets. Congrats to all the award winners. Hopefully the cash awards start a new trend.

Default RE: Markham Park Jet Rally 2011

Back to normality now, and almost caught up with emails after a week away in Miami.
What a fun few days that was. Sure. The weather was not kind all the way through ( We in fact lost a day to wind and rain, but it was flyable all the rest of the 4 days)
Sure. The flying field was smaller than what we are used to at Jet events. But after the local guys gave us some pointers and tips and we had all flown from there the once. All was fine, and it actually made things more interesting ( Landing in a cross wind really focused the thumbs)
Sure. It was not the largest attendance pilot wise. I think around 60 pilots, but that was just a nice amount. There was a big enough crowd to make it fun, yet not too many that you had to wait to fly. If you timed it right, you now and again got lucky and had the sky to yourself for a few laps which made a pleasant change to flying racetrack pattern all the time. [:@]
I think for a first event it was a great effort. A big thankyou to my Host Pablo, and sponsors House of Power. A huuuuge thanks to the Markham club for giving up their field for us jet guys. I had a really fun time. The standard of flying at the event was really high. I think I only saw one crash over the entire weekend, and despite the sometime challenging conditions I saw very little in the way of landing damage.
I am so lucky with being able to attend these US events, but even more so that I have a really wonderful group of friends who look after me and make them fun. Chuck Storrie has to take a special mention. Rich Curry, larry Kramer, Pablo.... and the irreplaceable RC Pete! What a laugh we had, both at the filed and off! My internal organs are still recovering from the last night out with the guys.... Damn I have not laughed that hard in ages!
I do hope this event runs and runs, as its a really nice alternative to the big open jet events where a whole bunch of guys get on an airfield in the middle of nowhere and fly laps all day long. The Markham park facility is beautiful, and there is so much to do, and with so much on hand. It really is an event that you could take your significant other to, and they would have loads to do within walking distance..... almost ( This is the US after all )
I was having so much fun, that I forgot to take my camera out of its bag all week, the only photos I have are from my I phone I am afraid. Looking through I find allot of them are not fit for publication on a public forum but I will post those that are.
Regards Al

Speed machine 1 ( AKA. Chucks old Avonds F-15) and my Tin Cat following the A-10. I had forgotten how much fun a light weight Avonds F-15 can be. Especially when not overpowered. This was pretty much identical to the same set up that I started with as my first jet all those years ago, and still fun today!

Randy's gorgeous F-16. Hard to believe this was a fly eagle kit. Randy's artistic skills really did a wonderful job of brining this model to life. Flown as well as it looked by Pablo who pulled off and really good save when the turbine took a big dose of air just as it passed over the centre point of the runway!

Another transformed F-16. This time a slightly smaller Jet legend offering.

Keeping on the subject of transformations..... This Tutor was apparently crashed and smashed to pieces. Malcolm Kay was telling me that when he gave Albert the airframe, the thought there was no way it would be flyable again. Yet alone looking as good as this.
Nice to see a Tutor in another scheme for a change.

You know you are in Miami when the RC club car park looks like this... The Lambo was just one of a handful of nice automobiles that graced up over the few days of the meeting.

Rich Curry's Ultra Lightning. JC Rhino powered and as usual perfectly built by Rich. I have said it many times before, but this guys planes are just astonishingly perfect. I was so delighted that after three years of flying his toys, i finally managed to find a loose grub screw on the nose leg of his Bandit Mk2 and prove he is human after all... Needless to say Rich was devastated. His response was to pull me to one side and say in a deep intimidating voice.... " This never happened..right! "

I got all excited when I thought I caught rich out doing some wrenching... I should have known he was just charging up [:@] When I had my Ultra lightning with a JC Rhino, I assumed as I bought it from Jet central Pilot Raul Lazano it had a "special" Rhino inside. Especially as it would hold its own against a pair of AMT Olympus HP powered examples in a drag race. Well flying Rich's stock set up I am re assured mine wasn't. For a big model on a standard size turbine this UL really did cover some sky.

and for something a little different.
This modified BV Bobcat was done as an experiment to test the flight controls and tail layout for a full size aircraft that planned to use the same configuration. It all seemed to work out perfectly. ( Did look odd though )
