Paul

You exaggerate, it was only 200 pieces I was in the office 13 hours solid yesterday and it was done.

Yep, got back some of my old get up and go. Everything worked faultlessly all day.

Take off...

I saw it fly today at Classic Jets. It looks great on the ground and even better in the air. Very impressive all round. All the landings were very good. It's a vast improvement to the original.

First, I must thank Mike and Cyndi for their patience on this one-its been a long time coming due to various things away from the aeroplane. I'll write down my set up, I programmed a new radio yesterday. JR XG-11 DMSS (I've never flown a turbine with this Tx, so was all new learning. The settings I put in, are as the 5 flights today, I did not adjust anything. I always look at the way the aeroplane is rigged and surface size to gauge figures for movements and Expo...and have a knack of getting what I want. The first Mig had one flight only, before I spoke with Mike and retired it (its going to the Guys in Germany as a display airframe in the next 10 days) it was just too heavy at around 14.2kg wet I remembered those settings pretty well.

OK, this build.

Step back and the assembly on No2.

I used JR 3401 (3421 USA) elevator servos, rudder is a JR 8231, Ailerons and flaps JR 8321, nose steering JR 579 and UP 3 valve JR 321. I used 2 way JD valve on the airbrakes and a single acting valve on brakes. Powerbox sensor switch with 2 Graupner 1600mAh 2s Li-po. JetCat P-100RX and a JR XG-11 with 11 channel Rx. So equipment, just about the best of everything available

Elevator servos need the tail opening dremelling out, the servo opening was increased with a sharp scalpel. All servo arms are JR super servo arm with a 20mm radius on the outer hole. Flaps are set at 15mm radius. I changed elevator to a Miniature Aircraft USA ball link (0133) and ball (0105)

I used the kit glass Horns, but in all cases reduced the size/shape to suit, making pairs each time.

Default RE: Global JetClub Mig 15 arrives

The wing servo mounts use GJC wood provided, the ailerons 4 layers (laminated with Hysol) and belt sanded to taper 4-3 layers front to back to allow for the top skin curve. The flaps are 3 layers as they come. The servos were "masked" with tape on the wing surface side, so the servo and mount could be glued in as one and the excess glue would not stick the servo to the wing!
I removed the retract units (as I always do) and changed the tube to BVM air tube. I also cleaned of the sharp edges on the side frame guide slots, especially each end where the "lock" notch is. I lightly greased the tracks using a cotton bud, with a small amount of grease. Units were re installed. I used Robart F-RB169B brake line. I taped it to the leg to hold it clear and allowed a big loop above the retract unit to allow for leg movement.

Towards the end of the set up, after the gear had been cycled a number of times and were always free I screwed the outer gear cover plate in position and one gear became tight... removing the corner screw nearest the cylinder-I could see the screw had touched the cylinder made it free again. The screw was 1mm too long!

Wings were done except for final set up! Note. I used Robart/BVM quick connect airline joiners, 5 in each wing. The tanks are inside the wing at this point, so there is not much space for 5 connectors. If I did mine again I'd leave more tube coming from the fuselage and loop it around the wheel space in the wing-wheel well. Maybe some MAP Airline clips to tidy it up.

One of the longest recent delay was the two kidney tanks. I'll talk to Mike on these, though flights today proved they do work fine in flight. My first model with felt clunks and BVM clunk line I was never happy with. The lines cannot be as long as I'd like, so it was a compromise. This one I use weight brass clunks DJM items I think! Again with BVM 2804 tube and the front tank had hardly any air even late in the kidney tanks capacity. I could not find my glass tank GJC provide, so I used a Dubro32oz tank mounted upside down so the 'buffer' block cleared the nose retract unit. This tank has a Felt clunk (CARF) and tygon clunk tube. The hopper tank is a MAP 4oz BT. P-100RX and the last flight I had today was near 9 minutes and the front tank still has lots of fuel in. I do fly a lot of slow stuff and scale speed and power setting, but the P-100RX is frugal!

Tanks are Velcro'd in (all three) The front tank has a wrap around velcro strap that was placed between the two pieces of HD velcro and Hysol'd to the fuse floor. Retracts have twin air tanks either side of the front fuel tank. A separate air tank is under the turbine for AB and wheel Brakes.

This model has no weight, the ECU pack is a std Li-Fe 2100mAh JetCat item, I'll probably move it back as fat of fuel, it is a little nose heavy. Weight is around 22lb with a little fuel.
Balance is at 6" forward (wing root) with MAP full and some fuel in the 32oz Dubro.

Did I say-I really like this aeroplane

Took the Mig out again today (Wittering Warbirds) and managed another three flights in rough conditions (we were flying on a peri track with a cross wind and big security fence 25m away, sloping up hill-great test!!) I love this model, amazed how locked it is clean-swept wing and small tail surface. Slow it does get bounced around, but its still very stable. We shot some video, so if Beardy can upload it we will post.
Eight flights now and not a single problem.

Started dirtying it up yesterday...Mike,I need a cockpit

Ok, here is the best of the videos, camera struggled with focus in today's light. This was flight two today and I flew quite a bit faster than I normally would ( I like scale speed). I'm still nose heavy and the extra speed helps with smooth rolls and tail authority. Time at 7.5 minutes the front tank is still completely full, I am flying 9 minutes usually with the P-100RX and the front tank is then being used.
Take off was at just over mid stick to give a Mig type slow acceleration Even the loops were not at full power, it is very well powered with the 100. The site was very bumpy (air) (you can hear the wind and that's with a mike cover on the camera!) The strip is also up hill and on landing it skipped because the touch down was earlier than I wanted with the ground coming up to meet it!

I meant to measure today! I'll do it in the office in the morning. Yes I have expo, memory says I set it at 25% on Ailerons and 35% on Elevator and did not change it after the first flight.

Both Aileron and Elevator are more than maybe you would think. I always set it to max for first flights, and I have not needed to down rate it. Guess would be 20mm each way Ailerons and 25mm each way elevator
NB none of the rolls were full stick, even the double at 6.43 is only about 3/4 stick movement. I don't fly rates, I just move the stick less!

Looks Great Dave,

It certainly lands a lot slower than the prototypes.

Well done

Yes, though that landing was not great and touch down speed would normally be slower in wind like we had, just the uphill landing and rough air from the fence made it wriggle a bit!. You can float this version down and hold it off on the mains (as per pictures on Friday) Its a winner for sure.

Dave

Just had some schemes and cockpit details sent through

Hi Dave,
Congrats on the new MiG and thats the best landing I've seen of the GJC MiG so far. Your MiG appears to be more level on the ground than the original. Have you modified the legs to adjust the AOA or is this how the new birds are? I installed an extra spring in the mains of my bird. It still sits low in the tail but much better than the original stance. I am considering cutting the nose strut to reduce the ground AOA. What are the dimensions on your bird from tail to ground and nose inlet to ground or what's the ground AOA? I have not flown mine yet and am concerned about the landings with that high ground AOA. Thanks for your help.

Default RE: Global JetClub Mig 15 arrives

Larry, thanks-but it was poor compared to most of Friday's landings on a level runway. I may try and fly it this coming weekend from our grass site.

Its how they come now, my original had soft springs and with fuel the tail bump skid sat on the ground! Talk to Mike about which springs you have, mine is perfectly sprung-the flight after the video I "placed" it pretty hard having got too slow and the gear took all the bounce, so I think they have it right now.
I'll put it together again and measure for you tomorrow, its in the office and I'm home.
What weight are you? My model was manufactured mid last year and is 22lb ish. No nose weight and balance with some fuel 6" forward of TE joint. It certainly can go back from 6", I have not had a chance to play yet. Like this it slows nicely and shows no nasty habbits. Landing it with or without AB just meant a little more power/later on the chop, elevator response is good. You can see from the low power take-off it floats off with hardly any pull.

Watching the early videos I'd say the guys were not holding it off long enough, certainly I would never land without flaps.

Hi Dave,

I would be interested in seeing a video of it flying off grass next time you get a chance. It certainly grooves along nicely in the air. How did you find the visibility with the Red/silver scheme?

I've asked Beardy to come along with his camera again if I go, so will do.
Not had an issue, there were flights over the two days where it was quite dark and also sun-glare and I didn't struggle at all...and my eyesight is not good!

Its very groovy, it does fish tail a bit in choppy air, but its not something uncomfortable or that you fight. I think its the best small swept wing aeroplane I have flown-but all Mig 15's I have flown are good. The Alfa EDF one grooved too.
I have several of my friends talking about getting one since seeing this fly.
GJC have impressed me, the few comments I have made are being acted on now and I get consistent responses to every email, Mike and his team are excellent.
I requested a scale cockpit tub and 6 hours later they sent me a tracking number!

Dave,
My MiG is the early version and weighs 26 lbs dry. Luckily where we fly in Hawaii is at 10 ft. altitude so the weight should be manageable. My Trim F-86 is about the same size as the MiG but only weighs 18.5 lbs dry. That is quite a differance and it is a great flyer. My measurements are 214mm to the rear fairing vs your 224 and 333mm to the center of the gun camera vs your 323mm. I added an additional spring in the main struts because the struts were originally bottoming out. It improved the stance but as you can see it is still 10mm lower in the tail and 10mm higher in the nose than yours. I'll see if I can cut the nose strut about 10mm.
When I first began flying RC back in 1974 I had considerable difficulties landing my Falcon 56 , my first airplane, without the bird bouncing on its nose then an old time flyer said to lower the nose to zero or even negative ground AOA which I did and then my landings improved dramatically with no more bouncing. Of course I will not be making the AOA of the MiG negative or even zero but hopefully more like yours.
Thanks for your help.
Larry
