Default Visiting Manaus - FigueiraJet 2011

I would like to post some pics and tell some stories in this forum about this last weekend of a extraordinary jet meeting that I had the luck to be able to attend, the FigueiraJet meeting in Manaus, Brazil in the hart of the Amazon Jungle , as I thought that maybe you will enjoy reading it.

It was great to meet with old and new friends, share the same field with our planes and fly a lot in such a beautiful and exotic place. Brazil is a big country and most pilots traveled big distances with big boxes via air travel to meet in Manaus, the home place of mr.Ary Figueira one of the most enthusiastic jet friends that I ever met. He and his family worked very hard to make this event possible and we had a great time flying jets, changing ideas and enjoying freedom in a exuberant and wonderful place.

My travels buds where old well known friends .. Nelson Kaminski, the jet turbine pioneer in Brazil and my old Kangaroo wich I like as a family member too. Even if Nelson had locomotion dificulties and I carried a refrigerator sized luggage, the trip was easily accomplished even after a connection in Sao Paulo.. total travel time was about 6 hours.

After arriving in Manaus, Ary received us with a truck to take the boxes to the club,,, meanwhile that night we gathered together to dinner with friends from all regions from Brazil and David Shuman too wich was a guest.

Manaus is a modern city isolated by the Amazon Rainforest. a very nice place with good hotels, shops, cultural places, etc... many wives gathered to do some tourism suggested by Mr.Ary´s wife, they also had a great time.. next day and after a excellent hotel breakfast we had a briefing with Ary at the club. It was pretty simple: Signing a term of responsability and there was no rules. We could do wathever we want, as he trusted in our common sense and experience flying jets.

He also kindly provided tables for people having all the confort ,

This place is now one of my favorites because of its isolation and incredible beauty even if the runway is not very long, and there is not much margin for error. What look like bushes at the runway end are 30 foot high treetops!

Some pilots overrun the runway but nothing was too serious. As I thought that this would happen to me, I carried a case with a saw, hammer, files some tube spares wich is something a "jungle mechanic" would use. Many people used them and I was glad that I bringed this tools even if I was lucky and had not any issue with the Roo with canards.

about the freedom I mentioned before, there where only 5 thropies..Most flights, Shortest landing,Lowest pass, Most radical flight and biggest bag all decided from the pilots vote.

The biggest bag thropy was won by this Bae Hawk: Turbine quit while doing a low inverted pass and the plane stalled while trying to reach some place to land. This was the only crash of the event, even if the jet flying was non stop.

Interesting to mention that this was one of the only two turbine runs wich resulted in a flameout, considering the extremely hot and humid conditions! By the way, the turbine in the Hawk was a old Modellbau USA 750.

As day progressed and the passes got lower (LOL) someone scrapped a wingtip at the runway for delight of the onlookers .. later someone scratched the two flaps and was claimed runner in for the low pass thropy.. then someone landed a Bandit without gear at about 100 mph taking about 200 feet to stop and finally Ary won the thropy by doing the same with his Boomerang but inverted!

Not big damage to the bird.. now it has just a slightly different silhouette.

David won the shortest landing thropy with the turbinator, proving again that this is the plane to buy if you have a short runway,,

Most radical flight was won by Ary too due to his new idea on avoiding gear wear while landing a jet! Short after that, a good friend who use to fly in his farm showed us some of his stuff: He has a Mick Reeves Reaper with a rocket launching system, among a pirotecnic ground explosion while launching them.. cool stuff to watch and more fun as we know this is prohibited in most countries!

The show was superb, and he did it many times of the day.. in fact this was the only fireball we saw this place.

Joel´s delta canard coped very well with the short landings requirements. Really nice to see it flying, bombing and landing.

Meanwhile, I was involved in a more sedated flying style while hearing Frank Sinatra´s "Strangers in the night" and "I do it my way" .... cool to hear that in the middle of the Amazon rainforest!

and more pics.. All the Bandits performed extremely well, as usual, also winning the most flights done thropy. By using full flaps and having a robust landing gear all of them performed very well in this demanding conditions.

Also Luciano´s 2 meter Viper flew all day long.. nice to see a father and son team having a good time together.

Erbroens, nice pics look like you guys had some fun!, I wish i had a runway like that i would be at the field every chance i get. that is a nice runway by looking at the pics you posted and I'm sure there's some more fellow jet flyers that would agree. I have to do carrier landings with my B Sprint on my runway but im very used to it now, so when i visit clubs with bigger runways its a piece of cake making the best landings.

Thanks Kenrico, indeed we have a lot of fun and yes, having a short runway makes great pilots.

As Honduras is not very far away from Manaus, perhaps you may consider visit us next year, as the FigueiraJet 2012 will have again Spanish and English translator services

More pics: Rafael, "the lord" having a walk in the runway, as for some reason the turbine in this Bandit quit, Ary´s P-20 powered Habu and Ciro´s Velox wich was the best flying and slowest landing I ever seen and the only one I know with crow mixing.

And now another fun part that I know you guys will love. The campinas gang of evildoers shamelessy copied the idea of our 2005 jet speed event and without paying any royalties for the copyright and intelectual property they started a GPS race to see who was the fastest plane at the event, but with a slight twist to make it more scandalous.

For having the right of competing, you should pay $100.. biggest speed takes the money. After many flights without incidents, 9 pilots competed and Luis Fernando from Goiania won the $900 with his bandit. His best run was 283 mph, and David took a very narrow second place at 280 mph with his Ultra Flash. This where very good numbers for regular, unprepared planes. Manoel and I, didn´t competed as his P120 barf and my Roo aren´t speed demons.

The Campinas mischiefs didn´t warned us of this idea, as of course they know we fly over 400 mph in Curitiba since 2005!

Anyway, Luis and the equipe verde e amarela deserves the thropy and the money, as he was the fastest guy that place.

The fastest piece of foam I ever seen. I was amazed how this managed to stay together at the speeds! Luciano Tachelli´s Funjet with a P20. This was a quick measure for taking a plane this place as Luciano´jets are all big.

The P20 suffered to start for some reason.. only way to get it running was having a leafblower assisting it while starting.

People said that Manaus is too hot and humid, etc... No problem whatsover for both pilots and turbines, as Ary put tents, air coolers , bottled water,a cold water shower, and even a small towel as a souvenir for the event.

At night, the planes where left at the field with rain and wind protection .. and we left for the city to dinner.. I am not used to talk so much, and a sore throat was the only issue at the end of the night. I also learned about some new exquisite fruits and fish food wich deserve a thread on it´s own,, Learning about tambaquira and cupuaçu justified the trip by itself.

and one of my favorite pictures, a perfect sunset of a perfect day. This really sums up what Ary got here and one of the best things of life: Enjoying a weekend of flying with good friends, comiting aviation and enjoying freedom.

There also will be a ton of pics of this event (and many others) at www.figueira.ms and videos as well too.

I would like to thanks Ary, Sheila and all the Figueira family and local friend for the hard work they had for making this gathering possible.

About the beauty and exuberance of this place I was impressed as usual with Brazil´s wonders, but the real and by far biggest wonder of this big country is the people who lives in it.

For those who may be interested there willl be another jet meeting this year in Fortaleza, november 14th.. this sea side city is very nice and this event will be run by Julho Bezerra (Cabrinha) wich is a super guy and pilot too. this event will be also one of the best.

So hope you enjoyed the stories and pics!

All the best for my friends here, Enrique
