Default Hobby King 90 mm ViperJet - Jetcat P20 Conversion

Having built the Hanger 9 Bind and Fly Taylor Craft in about 6.5 hours. I decided that there is nowt on the telly even after giving Murdoch over £40 a month to watch very littel new. I thought I needed somthing that will take a little longer to build. I have therfore made a very tentative start on the Viper Jet. Initially I thought I would just check out a few things for fit to see if it is doable.

I have a Habu 32 conversion kit from Motors and rotors and It looks like it will work fine. The 20 oz (600cc) Kavan tank fits in place with loads of space to spare so I think I might try a slightly larger one. Here are a few pics to get started.

After much thought I will put retracts in her as it looks as though it is sort of prepared for them.

And yes I am going to tidy my bench before I start properly.

Here she is on a clean bench. I said I would tidy up............ You would not believe the things I found. Now to surf the net for a slightly bigger tank

Making a start on the wing as I normally do lets see how easy it will be to get retracts in the wing. I intend to use the same eflite electric retracts as most people are using on the Habu 32.

First job is to cut out the servo holes and iron back the covering so that I can see inside the wing. The plane comes supplied with nicely covered servo covers.

Looking down the wing from the root it looks like it has to some extent been prepared for retracts although it is not advertised as such

Hello Mr Bigplums,

Can you tell me if the cardboard box that it came in was acceptable? Was it strong and did it have a shiny picture on the front? I understand this is important.

You seem to have a great deal of models so you are probably very experienced in this matter.

Did you BUILD them all yourself? That's very clever.

Thank you in advance for your kind attention to this issue.

No just a plain brown box I am afraid but it is very nice. I will keep it for you so that you can put your wheel collection in it

Why not cut the ducting inside the fuz you wont need it for turbine, I cut mine out on my second Habu 32 build,
I can now get a 24oz dubro tank right over the Cof G. and the ducting weighed 70g.
A big bonus is you can get the thrust pipe down through the canopy opening
a few pics to show what I did.

I was thinking the same last night. As you say it is not needed and then I will be able to get a bigger tank more on the CG. And it will be better access for all the wires................ Who needs ducting in a turbine ????????????

Thanks for shareing

The mounts in the wing can be adapted to take the e flite retracts. Bummer is the width between the mounts is about 2 mm too narrow and they have put vertical ply to the top wing sheet. I will dremmet it away and if this gets too thin simply cut it out a replace it. The ply that has been used looks very good

Well as the Bishop once said to someone............... I have got it in but not without a lot of drellel, file and scapel work and I can tell you that I needed every 0.5 mm of space. I am sure others could have made a neater job but this is fine for me. Tomorror I will spend a little time putting some of the strength back into the mounts but it is actually quite strong as it is. The manufacture of this kit for retracts was so almost there so why they did not do it properly I am sure I donot know. I will do the wheel well tomorrow. I intend to use Habu 32 wheels.

Very cool.

After I put a few hours in on my Falcon, I want to build a P-20 sized jet. Unfortunately... hobby king is out of this sized Viper. [&o]

Keep the pics coming.

Try the Mig 15 I also did a build thread on here and it flys lovely. The red Mig 15's are in stock and they are a very reasonable price

I have now put the strength back in where I had to remove the vertical ply from the bearer to the top sheeting. I just replaced this with some decent ply in effect the same position but set back a little each side. This is nicely epoxied in but oddly does not show up well in the pic. The retract installation is of course adding weight but I hope to loose at least one retract weight when I remove some of the ducting

Thanks... but I've never been into military aircraft. The Viper is just a cool sport jet.

Very similar indeed. The Habu is a a much quicker build however because it is designed to fit certain gear. The overall quality of the Viper is very good indeed

Dennis,

one of these has just flown here in Finland with the P20. I reckon the pipe installed inside was from Grumania. It goes well, but be aware of a wing rocking tendency in takeoff and landing, says the otherwise happy pilot.
He´ll try out an aileron gyro with it. My Tomahawk EDF Viper goes really well with the aileron gyro. (And without too!)
