BVM F-4 build

Guys,
Not sure where to start this one.
I bought the short nose Phantom built by Uncle Joe from Buck and was having a great time flying it while waiting for the long nose to be done. I put a D4S drag chute on it and had a JC P-140 in it that really made for a nice plane
In June of '16 I picked up both Phantoms from JR. The long nose was mine of course but John sold the short nose to another buddy and I offered to get it to him.
Six days later I had a massive house fire that completely consumed all three phantoms along with all my other model stuff (7 total BV airplanes lost in the fire (3 Phantoms, F-100F, two F-16s, And an Electra), plus other non-replaceables etc). I have started this post about a dozen times but haven't finished it until now. We don't know the cause of the fire, but do know that only things were destroyed due to the persistence of a dog that was supposed to be put down ten months prior and a babysitter/nanny that got both little kids and the dog out all the while dialing 911 and rolling some very brave firemen.
It took quite a while to get the house repaired, the family set, and my bruised ego to heal enough to get back into the hobby. Thankfully USAA ins was awesome and came through as quick as one could hope for.
As part of the rebuilding I've got a BVM 1/6 F-16, eBandit and replaced my E-Flite F4. I have one KT210 and will order another for the next project:
With four kids and two jobs I simply don't have the time to redo a BV phantom, so I did the American thing and ordered an ARF. This time a Skymaster F-4 and then modified the paint to be the old man's plane. It's a nice plane that I'm putting a lot of carbon and such into to make it a daily flyer
This pic was the old man with his ancient wallet photo he's carried for decades, taken two days ago

That really is a great shot of your dad and the Phantom. Glad to see you are getting back in the saddle--I can't even begin to imagine what you went through buddy. Talk about you all the time with Kelly R. and my son Addison.--All good of course, what else is there

Nice Dave.. I love the Phantom painted in camo. They just look mean and business like.. ..
So glad you have come out of this OK. Sounds like you have a pretty good start on the new fleet...
Good advice, you can always replace things/possessions. But, I do hope that dog of yours is dining on prime beef steak for the rest of its life.. Sounds like he/she earned it..

Fellas,
Thank you for the kind words. It was hard to get moving forward, but I have the luxury of *****ing about the things I lost because all the people were fine.
Mark/Doug, right on man. John Wayne birds. Good analogy!
Ad, I spent an hour on my hands and knees sorting through knee-deep crap to find the pitot tube you cut for me. I saved it and it lives in my truck. It seemed irresponsible not to find that and keep it. I can't find the one for the tail (both phantoms were just piles of fabric). Thank you again.
Kelly and Ad, I'm looking for a kalispel layover where we can all get together
Roger, I've been following your Hun build. Sadly mine got smoked In the fire. Yours is awesome. Thankfully I know where there a nib 100F in Montana if I really want one. Sadly we put the dog down in early December after eleven and a half years. She was an awesome dog, but her time came

Dave....wow, you never mentioned the fire before. Wish I had known about the BV F-4 situation. I've still got my original F-4 up on a shelf in the basement. It started as a dual engine ducted fan back when and I later converted it to turbine. It was my first "heavy metal" jet and considered big in it's day. It was featured on BV's home page for awhile and also on the tee-shirts at Top Gun one year.
I had my last air-start AMT Pegasus installed for power and a few years back I got careless during a startup. The air supply hose had too much slack and got sucked in and fodded it big time. In addition to a new turbine, it was due for radio/servo upgrade so I just decided to "retire" it.
As evidenced by my avatar, that jet will always have a special place in my rc history. If I had known your situation we might have been able to work something out.....still could if you're interested.
Anyhow, great pic of your Dad and glad you are back on your feet, rc jet wise.
Craig

Doug,
I really thought about it. At the end of the day I had to be honest with myself about the time I could devote and the timeframe I wanted to be flying in. It's a phenomenal plane. It was funny, more than once I had it out and someone would say "what model is that, is it X?" When I said "no, it's a BV" almost universally is get a "woa, nice Flight then". Funny the mystique around the plane
Craig, damnit! John and I sat down at one point and listed all the long noses we could think of: yours, David Reid's, etc etc. I figured the Lord himself was going to struggle to pull that plane out of your cold fingers. Check your email

On another note for Phantom lovers I took my dad down to Holloman AFB for the retirement of the last drone Phantoms. An old buddy of mine from a previous assignment was the commander of the unit and was awesome to us (thanks Elvis!). I got a couple good pics that I'll throw up here

Back in the day when Shulman, Reid, Timmy a few others, would all go up with turbine BV F4 squadron it was ominous looking from a distance. I've really never seen any type of squadron flying since those Superman days that looked as surreal.....
I remember Reid having a 199.99Mph flameout on high speed pass and stair stepped it down straight on, no turns and I swear he was 1500' down the runway at touchdown..............

Thanks Craig. That's about as artsy as I get. The double sunset was too cool to pass uo
c/f I had a flameout on mine as well. I was about 400' at about 150 on the downwind and saw the telltale smoke trail. Of course my first thought was "ooh that smoke system is working well...oh F, I don't have a smoke system!!!!" I made a 180 degree turn and had just enough to plop it on the end of the 700' runway and roll to a stop in front of me without brakes. I could not believe how it bled energy! The hardest part was getting the stain out of my underwear! It turned out to be a static shutdown (yes I run anti static fluid-it was old firmware in the motor that would default to a shut down vs keep running).
Id love to see a gaggle of these things go. I'm not brave enough mind you but it would be awesome with the likes of Shui and Timmy etc pushing them around

The BVM F4 always showed the cream of the crop heavy pilots, Shui told me once, slowed, dirty and nose high, he would be back at 50% throttle at touchdown flare. The true mastery of throttle as elevator. I see this skillset being lost with the ever increasing size of the jets going so large...
Reid was 200' and just over runway upwind high speed pass, No way a turn was gonna happen. Thanks for sharing your story luv them BVM F4, I book mark JR thread the minute he started it.

I remember there being 9 bvm f4's at Florida jets in 2000. Cool thing is several of them are still flying. Billy Harrods E nose in primer had a flame out at mid field and low, amazingly, did a 180 and made it back.
There is a good picture of them on the bvm event picture's FL jets 2000.
Yep, the John Wayne of jets by any standard.
