Default AMT Mercury bearing replacement UK?

Hi guys,

My old AMT air start Mercury is due a bearing replacement ... is there anybody in the UK that can do this with a rebalance ... I am in two minds as wether it is worth sending to AMT as cost is almost unjustifyable ... (and im skint)

Any info on bearing sizes etc and if there is a place in the UK that can suppl the bearing and or fit them and rebalance that would be great.

Scott.

Scott, AMT USA is now US mirco jet. I'm sure they would be more then happy to take care of your engine. Flew both my 180 and 280 this weekend both air starts.
Give Russ Adams a call 888-894-5387, 900 Glendale-Milford Rd, Cincinnati OH 45215. they have done berrings in both my engines recently and I must say they did a super job.

I got back both of Mercury's from US Microjet and they are running fine. The bill was around $850 for bearings and some other parts. Those little turbines don't like being dunked! You know, those early Mercury's are getting old, you can only only repair so many times without changing most of the parts and that gets gets expensive. My 2 cents. Good luck

Hi Chrigui,

Thanks for posting, did you by anychance take any pictures when you were dissasembling it etc? It would be nice to know what im up against ...

Is the sheck balancer commerically available?

Any further information would be very helpfull in my descision as to tackle the job myself or not.

Best regards,

Scott.

The reason I ask is that I been ther done that... The "sticking" is likely the turbine wheel touching the case in the rear. I have learned that the older Mercury's develop a reshaping of the rear case/ngv/stater assmy... 'oval " shape if you will. If thats the case it can be cost prohibitive to fix.. Mine have ran for years with no problem, and one of mine developed this condition... The air would not spin it over.. It would turn and the stick in certain place.. I thought it was bearings too... I went ahead and fixed mine, and it runs great.. ( did not need bearings at all ) .. If you call U.S. Microjets and visit with Rodney in the shop he will give you the inside story of what I'm trying to say.... Even if you elect not to fix it or fix it somewhere else, It's worth a phone call to understand the problem. 1.888.894.5387 is the #... Let me know how you end up !!!

The turbine runs great, I wouldnt say that the sticking was in a particular place at all and when I flick it over by hand its mint and always starts on the money.

From the pictures I can not see and fixing to hold the rear of assy in the can, does it just push in and then is fixed only at the front?

I wish we had like Chrigui in the UK.

Its not clear how the rear of the turbine assy is attached, my can is doesnt have any rear external fittings visable like the wrens and the jetcats.

Some great work, very inspiring ...

From the cut away view it looks like the entire inner assy slides out of the case forward?

are you sure it needs bearings? Bennie once told me he has never had to change a Mercury bearing unless it's had a lube problem or crashed.

BTW, I have changed bearings on a Mercury before and I got them directly from AMT in the Netherlands and the engine was hand balanced fine.

Thats right, but can be difficult to pull apart so I made a tool that bolted inplace of the inlet. This could be held in a vice or pulled by another person. The one ne I did needed heat on where the NGV slides in the case to get apart.

Jason, your not that far from me ... I dont like to ask but if I can get some bearings and give you some cash - drive down etc etc could you give me hand?

Interesting you should say that they never need replacing? mine do sound rough and do stick .... a lube problem ... hmm - not sure where that leaves me ...

Any more interesting info Jason?

Sides:

You can get the bearings from WrenUK or directly from GRW in germany, the part number is D608/602, The size is 8mm x 22mm x 7mm, I can later tell you how to remove the case...

You need a friend, 2 pairs of welding gloves and a gas torch
Remove cap head screws round periphery of case and glow plug.
Best remove anything that can melt on front of can, eg FESTOs.
Warm up case especially NGV area and pull. Be carefull not to destroy the large O ring that seals the front of the case.

(Unless you have a lathe and can make up a mandrill in place of the bell mouth.)

GOOD LUCK

That is interesting as I had always thought they used GRW as well, maybe why they wont approve the use of other turbine oils where other turbine manufacturers who use GRW do.
