Default Enlarged Zirioli Turbinator 125% size

Got an email last night that "Limey Bob" from LDS has my enlarged kits up next on the laser table and will ship Thursday. I decided along with my spotter Jimmy this year while we were spending so much time driving to events together that my Zirioli Turbinator flies so well that a bigger one will just fly so much better and will be sized just right for the larger turbines at 125% and my minivan. LOL. It will be roughly 100" in length and span with either a two or three piece wing. We just started taking to Bob last week about the project and within a few days he had a quote ready for us; Jimmy and I both decided we needed to go forward with the project this winter since he has a new shop and I have a person that wants to buy my regular sized Turbinator. Pictures to follow.

Ron, Good thread. I like doing stuff like this myself and have a Reg. size sort kit fro Bob. I would love to do a 44 size turb in the future. I will be watching for your Photo's.

Thanks for the note. Now I just have to cut the wings. The stabs are already cut and ready to start sheeting. I will pick a retract gear size this week and just saw that Robart is coming out with their own electric gear so maybe we can get them in the larger sizes now like the smaller ones from E-Flite and not have to spend the big bucks to get them converted by the aftermarket guys.

Huge tube of plans got here today, waiting on the wood parts. Nick is in town for a few weeks working with me so he will get a chance to see the project from the start.

Nick and I got a chance to look over the enlarged plans and how I am going to build up the wing as a three piece one. I'll split it at the end of the flaps as then I will be able to have either the std wing or the long one depending on my final thoughts. The three piece wing also allows me to put it away in the van or my shop on its wheels. It will fly great as it will be 101" long, and either a 90" std wing or the 100" extended one. I just have to get time now to start it. I'm off the week of Xmas so that might be a good jump off time.

Very nice!

What are we looking at regarding turbine thrust and weight ? a three piece wing will be nice so it can stand on it own feet ( wheels ).

I'm going to use my P-120 for it. The Skymaster T-33 is about the same size and I have flown my regular size one with the P-120 and 1/2 power is all she needs so the 25% increase in size should be just about right for the engine power now.

Just spoke to Nick Jr.. He will be cutting a plug for the correct sized canopy when he can to it. I am sure he will be resonable on the price. Contact me if you will want a canopy for the Turbinator 125, that way Nicky can get an idea on how many to pull on the first run. Robart 638 mains are just right with the 638 nose gear. 1/2 inch struts all around. Waiting to see the price of the new Electric Robarts before I buy a set of gear. The Dreamworks gear will work just as well but I work parttime for a LHS and they are getting me my gear at a good price as part of my pay.

Put me down for one canopy.

I worked on my wood order last night till my brain started hurting. Now my calculator tries to multiply everything times 1.25.

I'm going to use Spring Air 402 retracts. This set was used in my 30# P-39 for many years with no problems. I laid them on the plans and they will fit perfectly. Plus the mains have brakes, so I'm all set.

I have you on the list Gary. I am going to get to look at the plans for wood sizes finally as we finished my project today at work. Nick will be working for me until Xmas this year again up here in Baltimore, so he will be over a few times for dinner in the next few weeks and will advise on any changes he thinks we should do. God I love this hobby!

Ok, that makes four so far I'll tell Nicky to start with at least six so we have a few extra to start.

Ron, a question for you. How did you figure the wood sizes? Was that done by you or the kit cutter?

Default RE: Enlarged Zirioli Turbinator 125% size

Ram-Bro we went with the same size wood for the formers and fuse sides. Bob scaled up the drawings so some of the notches will need a little tlc filing. We did change the sides to 1/8th birch ply instead of 1/8th lite ply and doubled up on a few high stress ones like the gear mount for the nose gear and engine mounting area. At 125% the wood size is just not that big of a deal since Nick used 1/8th balsa for the fuse sheeting we will as well. I am using a foam core wing with 1/32 ply skins on the inner section and 1/16 balsa on the outer panels, I'm not sure what Bob did for a sheeting off set for those who opted for a built up wood wing and stab. Since a beams stiffness goes up by the square of the section the wing should be 156% as stiff as the regular sized one just by the size difference using the same sized wood for the sheeting as the std one. I'm not worried about the bending loads on my wings but those of you building the all wood one might want to add a carbon cap on your spars or just use the larger size shown on the plans made out of spruce.
