Installing some more power!!!! K170
I hope to get some flying done this weekend at an event at my home field but the weather is not looking so good. Got a week and a half until TopGun so need some practice. This engine will help me get out of the grass with a more scale like takeoff.

I hope to see yours in Kentucky this year! Got any pics of yours? Cant ever see enough of them.
BTW no such thing as power to spare when im flying lol. They let me try the 180 and Dirk who was spotting said I was going to bend my throttle stick if I pushed any harder forward. Was very nice doing hard loops with thrust vectoring and still being able to accelerate in the vertical!

Got to take the new engine out for a spin yesterday!!
The first start it cranked right up. I thought I would have to tweak some settings but no I did nothing. It fired right up. Power is amazing! I only got 2 flights due to the heavy crosswind. But first takeoff I went straight vertical with it. The 170 is a perfect match for this plane. Not to mention it was nice landing each time with the engine still running
Very big thanks to Barry at Kingtech for making it all happen.
If I get a break in the weather then I will get some more flying today or tomorrow.

Started work on the outboard gear doors today. On the FS raptor these are pretty plain so pretty easy to do. The chances of seeing them are slim on the model but at least now I know they are done.
First I sanded them down. Then epoxied on some thin balsa sheeting. After that I made the gear door up-lock hook. I also made a support bracket that the real one has. Was pretty easy and looks a lot better then stock fiberglass.

Gunn,
That's the perfect engine for that plane. That's what I installed in the one I built in this video. Don't pay any attention to the first landing. It was a mayday. Look at the fly-by's, though, and you can see that this engine gets the job done. This runway is less than 500', too!

I agree I've got a jet central rhino in mine (also 170n) and couldn't be happier.
Im almost a little scared to do full throttle passes as she gets going fast. She's one of fastest scale
Jets I've seen when you push it. Has anyone else hysoled the vertical stabs? Mine were not but I'm thinking about
doing it as I never plan to remove them. Just a little worried one may decide to go bye bye in flight one day.

Well mine are not hysoled in and I flew it with a Kingtech K180 at Florida jets and I had it full throttle going about as fast as it can go many times with no problems. I was also doing some very hard high speed turns with it at full throttle and everything was rock solid.
Keep in mind I got rid of the stock horns that yellow puts on the rudders. I think these are what caused flutter and the problems with others. I used big BVM carbon horns with max mechanical advantage along with 8611 servos to drive them.
I am flying the Kingtech K170 now and I have been really beating on the plane in the air and its been perfect.
I agree this plane is very slick in a straight line unlike the F15.

RE: Yellow F22 Build
Well it is with great sadness to inform all of the demise of my great Raptor. Was flying today and during a high speed pass it began a gentle uncommanded climb and roll. I got it to continue the roll to get it away from populated area and as I got the 180 degree turn complete it began a series of left and right rolls that were uncommanded. It then started a continuous roll that was unstoppable. I killed the engine and watched it go straight in from about 500'. There was a huge geyser of fuel when it hit the ground but no fire from the impact. Before we could get to the site, the batteries sparked and started a fire. Luckily it was a cotton field that had not been planted yet.Total loss, absolutely nothing survived. Big bore Rhino will not be economical to repair when you factor in the cost of all the solenoids, pump, ecu and damage repair. I handled it pretty well because no one was hurt, property damaged and such. If I had rolled right it might not have been as fortunate. Inspection of the wreckage (what little there was) showed both aluminum stab control arms damaged. One was broken from the impact and the other the end had melted off. I suspect the pipe failed and toasted all the wires, servo, control arm and all. The pipe was severely damaged by the impact and cant really tell if it failed or not, but the melted aluminum control arm leads me to believe that was what happened. There was no smoke from the airplanein flight to indicate pipe failure but I got the motor shut down pretty quickly. Recommend everyone take look at their pipes. My jet was going on 5 years with 200-250 flights. On to the next project..................

Hi Tom
Again sorry for your loss,
You will recall I had the same end result due to a different issue that lost my 22.
As you say it is time to move on, but a year later I still miss mine it was the best jet I have ever owned

Sorry to hear of the loss.
Thank you too for sharing on the suspected cause for your crash. This pipe tends to develop a concentrated heatspot? That's the only way I think a pipe can fail other than suction collapse.

RE: Yellow F22 Build
It was the Yellow pipe. Let me be clear though, the plane was 5 yrs old and had a lot of flights with a Rhino. If it was the pipe that failed it was my fault for not checking it more often. I am not blaming Yellow for anything. This is an absolutely great jet and I will eventually get a new one.

That sux Tom!
The only reason I found my pipe failing was because it was yawing real bad during hard thrust vectoring and it made me look into it more.
My yellow Pipe failed in the first 6 months of operation. I think the normal pipes are fine but the ones used for thrust vectoring are flawed. The double wall ends before the end of the pipe and because of that it does not get suction from the inside pipe exhaust flowing out. That makes the double wall not get enough air around it and it runs hotter then it should. The stock yellow pipe non thrust vectoring should be fine.
My tams pipe is smaller dia in the back so the outer wall is inside the thrust vectoring so it sucks the air through the double wall. Im flying mine with a 170 now and full throttle allot beating the crap out of it. So many this week where blown away with the top end speed.
Tom would love to see you do another one!
