RE: Gotta love that screen...
I was going to post about this transmitter as well, because it seems grossly overdue. With $200 iphones and $700 iPads, how come our $1,000-1,500 tx's don't have decent color touch screens?I know they produce many more phones etc reducing the per unit cost, but this technology has been around for quite a while now.

I'm not a Futaba guy but used to be when I first got into RC. Futaba has always made nice stuff. I like this radio and I may have to switch to Futaba because I'm thinking about using Weatronics. Good to see the technology advancing. I like the multiple RX capabilities.

I've owned the 14MZ for two years when it first came out. In the age of the iPhone, this is inexcusable. The UI on the 18MZ looks straight from 1980 on a high resolution screen. For $3000, I expect more. Call me crazy....
I'm a software developer for consumer user interfaces used by millions of people and I know a sh*#& UI when I see it.

RE: Gotta love that screen...
Fender, let me point out a couple of things...
1.) My point in instating that I develop software that is used by millions of consumers isn't to brag, you do enough of that for everyone on this board. I made the statement because I do this for a living and have an opinion on the matter.
2.) The iPhone reference had nothing to do with "apps". The user experience of the iPhone has influenced consumer software across multiple industries. Simply put, the majority of consumer facing companies actually try and make their software easy to use and visually appealing because that is now an expectation that consumers now have. My impression is that Futaba spent a great deal of time & resources developing great hardware, but didn't put much emphasis on the user experience of the software.
To get back on topic, the 18MZ is an awesome looking radio that is making me consider going back to Futaba. The technology is very impressive.

RE: Gotta love that screen...
I think you will have to wait more than 3 weeks.
I have 2 on order with Ripmax, rang them yesterday and they could not confirm a delivery date.
So well into the new year I think.
Still looks a fantastic radio
I will have to continue with my 14MZ.
My old but trusty DSX12 looks like an antique compared to the 18MZ
Come on JR get your finger outyour getting leftbehind.
Phil.

RE: Gotta love that screen...
I have just spoken to Colin Straus at Ripmax and itis possible they might be here by the end of the month.
Looks like a shipping date from Futaba of 14th of this month if they are happy with everything.(last minute software updates).
Sure looks like this system is going to set standards in RC spec.and programming.
I cant wait, my christmas present to myself.
Still a big kid at 60.

RE: Gotta love that screen...
I like the way the price tag just rolled casually off the guys tongue, as if it really was £29.99
I'll stick with my £700.00 DSX9

RE: Gotta love that screen...
Hi Phil,
Good news.
I believe the 'last minute updates' take the form of a 14 to 18MZ model memory migration utility.
Cheers,
Mark

Looks like a nice bit of bling....
Next time I see you Mark you'll have to give me the Futaba tour as I know zilch about their radios, Sbus systems etc... andys post suggests you can use the weatronics system with this radio is that without modifying it? Ie fully integrated and all you need is a wea rx?
Sorry for the stupid questions []

RE: Gotta love that screen...
No probs Alex, can give you a tour
I don't think you could use the Weatronic system with this as it has an integrated module so no way of plugging in the Weat module. Not bad thing judging by my experience with Wea anyway.... []
Anyway, I led to believe there is some good telemetry on the 18MZ that, whilst maybe not as indepth as Weatronics, provides the essentials such as battery voltages, signal strength etc etc Further sensors can be used for GPS, fuel, engine rpm, temp etc etc

I can't believe that they are almost ready to ship but Futaba still haven't released the full specs. I also am a bit (but not completely) surprised that people are willing to part with $3000 without really knowing what it can do.

RE: Gotta love that screen...
Had a good play at JetPower. Work on the assumption that it can do everything you'd ever want it to do and that you'll own it for say 5-7 years and all is rosy!
Still don't understand why people freak about the price!! People spend $3000 on a turbine no questions asked. That can only fly one model at a time, is at risk of being destroyed every flight and will be nigh on worthless in 5-7 years time!! The TX on the otherhand will fly 100s of models, is safe every flight and will be worth a fair bit in 5-7 years time...........

RE: Gotta love that screen...
Mark,
I agree with you hands down.
The average mid priced sports jets(carf Flash) etc for example with a JC 120SX sitting on the tarmac ready for its first flight costs £5000. = $8000. minimim.(could all be gone in an instant).
You can buy a basic mobile phone for £40.00 or an Iphone/top end Blackberry for £400-£500 . Look how many people have the latter, loads.
Why do you guys winge about the price of a top end radio when it is the most important part of your kit.
Ok if you have aBoomerang Nano youdo not need a 18MZ but for the average scale/sports jet flyer this radio will do everything you will ever need.
Phil.
