Scott
Good to hear, perhaps the heavy tail pipe is not such a non starter after all, or did you use a different one?

Mike,
I think Scott used the standard pipe and bypass, so as you say seems to be OK. it will be good to see the difference in nose weight required when I set mine up.
I am installing Electron retracts in mine as the GBRJET electric units are a little behind schedule, hope to have electric brakes running at CJ though.

I think there will be a big market for electric brakes, especially as that will get totally rid of the reliance on an air system for the UC, with the ultra reliable A123 batteries these systems will become more of the norm IMO.

Rob,
I depends a little on the hub and wheel.
Once we have the production Stinger units shipped which should be very soon we can look at the aftermarket options, the key is the electronics that drive it and this part is done and working 100%.

Hi
I've received my Gryphon last week & I started working on it. It is great model. The quality is amazing & the very light Wight is a big bounce.
I finished building one wing & I did reinforce to the nose wheel mount.
Scott, What about the control surfaces throw???!!!
I managed to get 25mm on the ailerons & around 35 degree on the flaps. Will I need more on the flaps?
Cheers

not really Gary, you know what they say about assumption being the mother of a F@#* up's !!

Max control surface movement 90 degrees each way = 100% movement each way, not rocket science really.

Big assumption left open to lots of interpretation, and if it can be interpreted in a different way someone will do it, as Schroedm said giving the movements in degrees leaves no one in doubt how large the deflection should be no matter where on the surface it is measured.

I never bother paying attention to recomended throws.I just program my Tx rates at 60%,80%,and 100% before a test flight and adjust after.

Hi All,
Here are some photos of Gryphon maiden. What's wrong with RCU? I can't load my pictures for the past one hour and I am in the USA, not Iraq. Finally got them up there.
Photo 1: Scott was polishing my Italian ride. That's added pressure for me on a maiden.
Photo 2&3: Taxiing it.
Photo 4-6: In the air. My cameraman did not have the camera ready when I took it off. Straight run down the runway with 15 degrees of flaps. Very smooth rotation
Photos7-9: landing - It's easy to land. Flaps all the way, carrying 2 to 3 clicks of throttle until it's over the runway and cut the power and flare. It lands slow. Brake is a bit too tight so I have to pause the brakes until it stops, but still can't prevent creating some flat spots on the tires.
First flight: C.G was at 180mm and it's nose heavy. By the third flight we took out 16 oz or more - I forgot the exact number, Scott has all the settings and data. He should come on the threads and give you an update.
The flight went very well. The VT-80 push it very good and has a very balanced power. It flies a lot like a pattern plane. If you decide to put a 100N engine, it will fly like a rocket with almost unlimited vertical. I prefer the 80N engine as it has adequate thrust for beginner/intermediate jet pilots. The top speed can reach about 180 mph after 1 big lap. Each flight takes 10 minutes with about 1/4 fuel left in the tank.
It's an impressive plane in quality. I hope Scott will load up some photos of his excellent installation shortly, and the current setting. I will sneak out on Thursday and fly some more.
Cheers,
Mike

Congratulation Mike...
I hope will have more & more successfully flights.
I can't wait to finish & fly mine.
I've a question, is the elevator servos save where they are above the trust tube???
It’s my 2nd jet & my first had no servos close to the engine. So I don't know.
I'm isolating all the wires coming from the tail servos of course. But what about the servos?

Thank you all. Our camera lady was at Tuscon Jet Rally so we don't have high quality video, except an iPhone video taken by a local member. I will try to get a copy from him.
The stock pipe runs very cool. We can actually touch the single wall pipe while engine is running. I don't think your elevator servos are going to have heat issues. However you might want to cover them with some aluminum heat shield materials just in case you have a hot start.
This Jet is simple to operate than most of my scale jets, and the red and yellow shows up very well in the air. I am very happy that I did not put any scratch or dents on this plane except some dead bugs and finger prints. We will remove more lead from the nose and will find a sweat spot for CG.
Here is what I have
Jr 10x converted to 11channel ACT. Radio with plotless servos 10Ch ACT RX with smart fly turbo EQ6, Merlin VT80, euro kit retract and landing gear, CAT air trap. Weights 21lbs empty. Has about 20oz of nose weight, but expect to go lower with newer pipe.

RE: GRYPHON - build thread (sports/trainer 2m composite jet)
Thank you Mike.
Great feedback.
I'm going to use a bit bigger engine on it " as it is the only engine I have now", it TJT Eagle 3000 which 12kg trust.
I know it is a bit over kill but I'll dial it back a bit. I'm sure I'll need more Wight in the nose as my engine is bigger, I'll push all the batteries to the nose & I hope that will help.
Mike, in your landing pics, you said that you had the flaps all way down & in the pics It was only like 30 degree, so is that the max throw you got?

I did find myself easing the joint between wing and flap to get the 60 degrees travel, just make sure the horn allows this movement - if it does get in the way you can always notch the wing skin in this area.
