RE: CJM F-4D Conversion and Build
Hi Ronnie,
Oh that is right, I remember that now, you came up with a cool way of fitting things up front, I will have to try something similar to keep some weight up front.
Is the JL stab a one piece assembly or is it built up? in another words, how are the two stabs attached?
Best Regards,
Mike

Mike,
The stab is one piece with a cross joiner between the two halves. Have a look at Post #32, photo #3 top column in this thread by 757driver.

Working on the belly a bit, remember this is the DF Kit with once piece wing that I am modifying for turbine and plug in wings. The belly pan is designed to be attached to the one piece wing. I have built up the wing box and now fitting the belly pan in place. I will have to do a lot of patch works later to get everything in tight. I will have to build the engine brackets later to fit my JC Rhino. The cool thing about CJM kits is that they pay attention to details, as you can see the belly pan is set up for two Sparrow Missiles, two more fits under the fuse up front.

RE: CJM F-4D Conversion and Build
I was so concerned about the way the diverters were fitting, I used a plug that I had a made a while ago to check the fit, and it looks pretty good. I know the plug does not look right, so rather than fooling with it, I thought about making another one so the past few days, I have been working on one. Lots of sanding and and fitting, the first picture is the old one and the rest are the way I am hoping to make the plug. I may pull a canopy off the plug, we will see how it works out, but most probably I will end up ordering one, I like to get the one with operational canopy.

Ok, I have been away for while, I got invited to be at the WGS Satellite Launch for the Airforce at the Cape this past week. The Launch was on Thursday night and I tell you it was a sight that I will never forget. I have a few photos here and have a video of the Launch that once I can get it on the PC I may upload it. I have worked for multiple defense contractors for the past 25 years and have never been so excited and scared at the same time

RE: CJM F-4D Conversion and Build
I have been working on the engine hatch and after some sanding I go the hatch to fit, there are some gaps at the edges of the hatch. So I used John Redman's method to line up the hatch and then drilled four 1/8 hole on the inside lip of hatch and the mating fuse section to keep the hatch in place while I deal with the gap issue.

To keep the engine hatch sides in place I am adding a few 1/8 dowel pins to the hatch where it fits inside a bushing that is attached to the Fuse. The excess was cut and sanded.

Being that I am converting from DF to Turbine, the plastic Exhaust needs to be replaced, so I made a mold and made three in case I mess one up.

It has been a while since last post. I have been working on and off, and have made some head way. I made a canopy plug and a mold. I pulled two canopies, one will be set up to open and close and one will be standard.

RE: CJM F-4D Conversion and Build
I was planning to modify the stab mechanism to be similar to JL setup. The problem I ran in to was that the chute could no longer be installed due to limited spacing. So I opted to use the CJM mechanism but I could not find the ones that I had. I knew that it had to be upgraded for the turbine conversion. I made mine based on some photos that I had from the guy that I bought the kit from.

I fitted the stab hardware in and checked for fits before installing in the stab. Also fit checked the parachute mechanism.

Here is a few pictures of the stab and rudder servo setup.I also used John Redmann's BVM F-4 build to replicate the vent channels in front of the vertical stabilizer.

If you recall this was the DF version with a single wing which i have converted to plug in wings. The center wing skin is now attached to the fuse. I have also attached the intakes.

Mike,
Looking good, keep it up.
Just an observation from my side. You have a piece of solid material that needs to be removed for scale appearance reference middle picture on post #68.

Hi Mario,
I have been debating to remove that solid area or leave it and cut and shape the missile to fit over it. I believe the original design used that area to secure the wing bolt in to the fuse. More than likely, I will be cutting it out. Thanks for pointing it out.

RE: CJM F-4D Conversion and Build
Hoping no one minds if I drop in on this build thread, but I'm also working on a (pre-owned) CJM F-4 that I picked up last year. It is really nicely painted in the Bicentennial livery. I am in Australia, but I think this jet had its birth in the US. Bruce Saunders from CJM thinks its possibly the one built by a chap called William Donner. I have no idea how old it is except its the one piece wing and I'm told was first built as a DF jet.
I'm going to put a 36 lb turbine in it. I have the stainless bifurcated pipe, servos, landing gear, brakes, UP3 sequencer, etc basically ready to install or re-install. Everything came out and has been checked and fixed and is waiting to go back in, but with some changes.
The model came with a single huge tank between the inlet ducts. My experience of heavy forward tanks in F-4 has been very profound - I lost my first smaller F-4 within the first 20 secs because of a heavy forward tank leading to a too nose heavy CG. So, pictured are the saddle tanks I have just finished building. Not as pretty as USSCAT's but hoping theyll do the job. They hold about 1.6L each. Combined, and with a smaller front tank, I should have around 5.5L.

RE: CJM F-4D Conversion and Build
Hi GRVW,
I have not measured the tanks yet, but the side tanks should hold about 60 Oz each, the middle tank will/should hold close to 80 oz. I moved the stab and rudder control to the tail end similar to JL f-4. Ithink the center tank will counter the extra weight in the tail.
Your F-4 looks good, I have not decided on the paint scheme yet, but it has to be something that i can actually pull off

I have removed the area that Mario had pointed out in the previous post. I still need to do more sanding but I think it is well worth it.
