Default how to reduce JetA fuel smell from hobby/jet room in the house ?

a turbine jet is a new item in my hobby room,

it is a used jet with some required repairs. So i prefer to just keep jet in house while working on it .

fuel can is out in garage , all the fuel lines are closed off on the jet , but still the jetA fuel smell is getting pretty strong in hobby room - and the house if i leave the door open in hobby room.

anyone had luck to vent room , or is only solution keeping everything out in garage ?

thanks, Joe

Jet A fuel has a very strong smell & if you spill any, it takes ages for the smell to go away. I always use Kerosene in my jets. It does not smell so bad & the smell disappears quicker.

I have used talcum powder for removing nicotine smells from cars where the owners have left that lovely odour - it has the property to absorb smells and help leave a more acceptable smell about

I have heard you can also use those charcoal shoe 'odour eaters' as well but have not tried these out - either way worth a try and not expensive.

Carbon/charcoal should work well, excellent idea Marc. You can buy carbon filters at good pet shops which are meant to be use on covered cat litter trays. These come as a mat which could be cut into a size and shape to be tucked away in your model. Worth trying I think.

I spilt some jet A1 in my car (on a seat) last year and was advised to try cat litter crystals and it worked a treat.

If you can smell fuel it's almost certain you have a small leak somewhere or there has been a leak in the past which has soaked into some plywood.

Provided you seal the vent there should be no kero smell at all.

ok, so i should be able to keep the jet inside if i take care of small leak or old spills .... that would be great ... !!

sounds like it is normal to have jet inside the house then.

"I always use Kerosene in my jets. It does not smell so bad & the smell disappears quicker. "

so does this seem to work pretty well ... in general most kerosene not smell so bad ?

i have same issue in my car carrying the fuel can

ok, thanks

I dont use Jet A1 for that reason.
I run on Paraffin in the UK.
Not sure what you call it in the USA.
Paraffin is a refined version, used for heaters in greenhouses etc.
Costs a little more but does away with the problem.

Just switching to kerosene (paraffin in the UK) will solve most of the problem. Clothes dryer fabric softener sheets (like Bounce) help absorb and cover up fuel odor. I keep one under the hatch on each of my jets. They last a month or two.

Put a couple Bounce laundry tissues in the fuse. Works great.

Hi,

I leave a small leak of JetaA1 on purpose, I love that smell in my garage.

No smell means no jets.

regards
Mario

Smelling "sweet" is a small price to pay in order to work on my jets on the kitchen island, dinning room table or living room floor. All are a lot closer to the icebox and TV then my cold garage shop in January.

BTW whenI was in the air force we used Simple Green to clean it up.  Cuts it up real nice and I love the smell of simple green.

Sorry Ron, they are just plain boring compared to turbines, no decent sound and no decent smell.

I like the smell myself, but I have had success using charcoal briquettes as odor absorbers. It's hard to find the ones without additives. I got mine at Lowe's. Also, leaving a dish of bleach out will clean out any odor. Good luck.

I knew I'd open myself up to some shots.... oh well.. I don't care.
You guys can live in the stone age with your smelly turbines... that's your problem.

check out how boring, slow and sluggish these electrics are

Planes are clean, don't smell up your house, car, drip all over the pitts so everyone has to smell your mess...
just giving you a better option

I love giving turbine guys hell, they are insecure

Ron, I have read many of your posts on here and understand that you're into EDF and respect that but, I can tell you as a turbine fan that most of us have no interest in EDF and you should have respect for that too.

I love that I'm running a "real" jet engine, it looks, sounds and smells like one. I'm serious when I say that if I was ever forced to go EDF through turbine ban or whatever, that I would most certainly go back to props, I'm that disinterested in EDF and I think that goes for many on here.

Kind Regards,

Mike
