Today I got turbine for smaller Galeb G2 - IQ Hammer 90+

One more time I want to thanks Dietmar and Hammer engines for great service...

Yesterday I made my home made UAT.
In friends machine work shop was made metal parts and plastic bottle are from pharmacy. Bottle is 0,2 litter capacity.
Hope this will work...

Before final installation I'll apply Teflon tape around screw under the cap...

Main tank will be 2 litter and home made also. Fuel system will be check on test table before installation in model.

Regards

Mirce

I like your fuel tank. That is a good idea especially when you have a friend with the machine to make the fittings.

Most air traps have the pick up line fixed in the middle of the bottle.

Have you had problems with that set-up so you went to a normal clunk?

I'll fix clunk in the middle of the UAT bottle.
When I made picture haven't right diameter metal tube, so I put piece of Tygon. It's can be little shorter and I'll cut it before final setup, so clunk will be exactly in the middle of the bottle. BTW, so short Tygon, have very small movement.
UAT bottle will be install vertical in fuselage.

I install gas tank and UAT inside of the model, but wasn't made pictures during this phase.
Now, G2 is in paint shop, so pictures will come as soon as model come back...

In few words, I made one two litter gas (kerosine) tank + UAT (0,2 litter).
In IQ Hammer I got advice to made gas line between tank - UAT and fuel pump as short as possible.
After Pump, length of the fuel line to turbine wasn't problem.

During fuel parts installation I change plan and made front fuselage part (nose) very easy to remove. Nose was removable before, but idea was to all "service" operation be under cabin. When I install fuel tank, UAT and air tank, no much room for other parts under cabin space.
More important was to try to install RC components as forward as possible.
Because that, I made easy removable nose, to can easy remove LiPo batteries for charging, ON - OFF receiver switch will be there, receiver, turbine electronic also, etc...

After small pause, latest news...

Galeb was paint in white. My friend Golub made great job, like always...

In meantime, I decide to change color scheme.
Unfortunately original G2 was "poor" with nice color scheme, so I think to made some my design.

Inspiration come from few ideas, I like yellow color, red star on the bottom are from real G2, insignia is ex Yugoslavia air force, only dilemma now is to put skull or to add some other detail...

Thanks Mike...

My friend have paint shop for furniture and he use Polyurethane colors. They are from two components, very strong and cover surface in thin layers, so no need for applying a lot of paint (weight)...

Usually he apply basic paint and on top clear cote. Clear cote can be 100% gloss or matte, depend which effect you want to get.
I think this G2 will be on 60% gloss. I paint my Meister Scale P 47 like that.
Ziroli Panther I made earlier, first was with 20% gloss finish and later, when I made "face lift" on it, we used 60%. Second was better option.

On the other hand, first G2 I made few years ago, was 100% gloss, because original jet from Aerobatic group "Stars" was like that, with shine...

Yesterday I "play" in my Corel program and made some changes on rudder...

Best regards

Mirce

Right now Galeb is in Novi Sad in my friends paint shop. He apply last two layers - yellow and clear core on top of all.

Designing is process, so during that phase I change here and there idea about G2 paint. Nothing big...
I paint here red and black color.

First I paint black on some parts...

Than same color come on fuselage...

Surface after black paint...

Next step was red, first on wing, latter on fuselage...

Bottom wing side...

During design phase I try to "mix" my ideas with some facts about G2.
Because that on bottom model side is big red arrow, same like on G2 of aerobatic group "Stars".
On rudder is ex Yugoslavia flag, insignia are same like on Yugoslav air Force from time when G2 flew.
I like "warm" yellow color and try to incorporate it in design.
White, red, yellow, black are colors which always give good effect. With little blue on insignia & tail flag I think that final result will be good...

I change scull from rudder with Yugoslavia flag. That flag convenient more in this "story".
Because that I change rudder from black to yellow, to link wing with rear model part...

I always use printer to print first all details. That is easy way to change size or shape...

Few more pictures during work here in Senta.

I change black area edges from red to black and cabin frame is black too...

Finally wing and fuselage are prepare for yellow...

...and sent in paint shop...

Result we will see next week, when the model comes from painting...

Few days ago I received few missing parts, so now I have everything to finish model.
Battery for receiver and servos will be 2 cell LiPo - 2250 mAh...

From Dietmar from IQ Hammer I got Fest manometer and shut off valve for kerosine...

He sent me jet oil for turbine...

While waiting to smaller G2 returns from painting, I put back bigger Galeb on work table.

On this model I need to finish belly on center wing panel, connection curve from the fuselage to the wing, one flap is not finish...

For this model I got also few missing parts, 18 gr glass cloth & G 10 hinges...

Hinges are install in ailerons and after install servo on lid, outer wing panels are finish for this stage.

That's all for today, next week pictures or paint 1/5 scale G2... Believe me, can't wait to see model...

Thank you Mike...

Most important thing now is weight. This second G2 I made because first one was, for my taste, little heavy.
A little reminder, first model was 13,5 - 13,7 kilograms. My goal was around 11,5 - 12 kilogram.

First G2 fuselage in this stage was 3650 gr - now fuselage is 2850 gr!!!

I haven't exactly weight for first wing, wrote on my web site that wing with retracts was around 4,5 kg.
Wing & retracts in this new model are 3790 gr, so that is also much easier.

Fuselage and wing are already 1500 gr easier.

This smaller weight will cut lead in front of the fuselage for CG. On first model I had to add 650 - 800 gr, depend where is CG.
Now I hope that weight for balance will be much lower.

Also, IQ Hammer turbine is easier, it's 20 mm smaller in diameter, no more equipment for propane - butane start, so in turbine section 200 - 300 gram will be cut too...

I really hope that this model will not be heavier than 11,5 - 12 kilograms, what will be great...

One small comparison, my Ziroli Panther, which was great flying jet model, was 10,5 kg and have wing area of 67 square dm.
Wing load was 186,5 gr/1square dm...

On 1/5 scale Galeb G2, first (heavy) model, weight was 13,5 kg, wing area is 83 square dm and wing load was almost same like on F9F - 186,7 gr/ 1 square dm.

If this new G2 will be, for example, 12 kilogram wing load is 144,6 gr. On 11,5 kg - 138,5 gr...
That is much better numbers...

In last few days I was working on parts install.
For now, I want to put everything in the model, than take turbine & equipment out, start turbine on workbench...

Before put gas tank and UAT in fuselage I apply epoxy resin and two glass cloth layers.
Two reasons for this, first to strengthen fuselage for 2 litter tank and to prevent kerosene to soak in balsa in case to tank leak...

Next was to add carbon cloth on area between cabin and wing.I apply aluminum foil in area near turbine exhaust, to prevent damage of hot start...

Elevator have two servos, so for perfect movement I put MatchBox.

That give me option to install just two wires, one for MatchBox and other for rudder servo...

Before put thrust tube I must squeeze wires through fuselage...

To prevent to wires touch hot tube I put small balsa plate...

Fuselage front, receiver and servo batteries - 2 x LiPo...

On other side, turbine electronic & battery...

Down, air system...

Turbine and thrust tube...

To be continued...

In last few weeks I work on installation of all parts and systems in model.
Yesterday finally come time for first pictures from the finished Galeb G2...

Best of all, Galeb is just 10,745 grams!!!!!!!!

I need to add some weight to made CG, but on first test it will not need more than 500 grams.
Maybe it will be less, depend where is correct CG.
My friend calculate that CG is on 140mm and in that case I need 500 gr lead.

If I use method from picture below, I calculate CG on 155mm. In that case only 200 - 300 grams will be enough for right CG point.

Now I have question, are you modelers use this drawing when calculated CG on your models?

First G2, I made few years ago, was 13,500 grams, so this, new version, with 11,000 - 11,300 grams, fulfilled all expectations.
During building I find some small space to save even more weight and for sure that changes will be add in drawings and parts for next G2 build and kit which will come.

Don't forget, this 1/5 scale Galeb G2 is 2320 millimeter wingspan and as I told, maybe little more than 11 kilogram!!!

More pictures about details, soon...

Thumbs up

Great job Merci !
I have enjoyed watching your build. I had to give up flying jets due to illness , I sure miss it, just sold my jets last month.
I wish you the best on your maiden . Looking forward to your report. You are a true craftsmen.
Cheers.

Great progress Mirce.. I hope you have a nice troubles free maiden. I always use this calculator to locate the CG http://adamone.rchomepage.com/cg_calc.htm try it out and see how far do you get from 140-155 range that you have.
