RE: Hawker Hunter 1/6th scale ARF from Flying Legends
Mike, the seat looks great!
To anyone else with a Hunter, could someone kindly tell me with the ID circufrence is at the front of the exhaust pipe? Carefully roll a pce of paper inside the exhaust tube at the front, mark it, and tell me what the length is as accurately as possilble. I'm considering removing my bypass in favor of a radiused inlet lip. I need to see if I can get the ring made up and I need that dimension, but I don't want to pull my turbine, bypass, pipe etc out to get it.
Thanks!!

265mm. Chinese tail pipe...be interesting to see if they are all the same. Most of them are pretty good parallel so what is your tail end size.
They are basically 85mm id.

Like Dave Platt has said; a scale project is never truly "finished", just good enough for now.
Still have to work out how I want to secure him into the 'pit, likely attached to the canopy for a one piece "remove and replace".
weight 6 5/8 ounces (186 grams) for the pilot and seat assembly. The pilot had to suffer major surgery; lower torso is now blue foam, legs and arms are Dacron pillow stuffing.

So, Mike...are we going to see this work of art (or maybe just yourself) at a Classic Jets this year?!
Cheers,

Anyone flying this beauty off grass with Jetcat 80SE?
Anyone flying this beauty off grass with Jetcat 80SE?
It would fly off grass with a P-80SE need 100-110m for take off
I have flown them off grass with more power and they easily come off a 90m strip

RE: Hawker Hunter 1/6th scale ARF from Flying Legends
SUCCESS!!!!
Well after a couple of hiccups and some procrastination, I maidened my Hunter today!
(Sorry no pix!)... next flight...
All I can say is WOW!... The plane flies beautiful. Like its on rails. My buddy Brian, was impressed and he's a bobcat hot shot.
CG was about 1/8" back from the instruction manual, throws per instruction manual, 25% expo on ailerons, (could dial it back to 20%), and she took a couple of beeps of down elev trim and about 3-5 beeps of left aileron trim (beeps cause my radio is an 18MZ and it beeps). Landing was super easy, except my nose gear got stuck in the wheel well :-( looks like the strut came out of its assembly? Scratched up the nose gear door, but that'll be an easy fix. I did notice a lot of judder on brake application? Maybe I need to use some brake lube as the brakes are real grabby. I'm using the stock brake valve and I don't know how well the valve works as far as variable braking? seems to barely be variable, then too much brakes... any advice?
I can hardly wait to fly her again... dang! I wish I didn't have to go to work.

BTW, does anyone know the capacities of the saddle tanks and the main tank?
Thanks

I did 2 things to my nose strut:
- added a 2nd grub screw to secure the strut to the retract steering pin and used LocTite
- ground a flat in the pin for one grub screw so that as long as the screw is at least seated the strut can't slide off the pin
My 3 tanks totaled 152 US ounces (4.5 liters), forgot to write down what each totaled separately.

RE: Hawker Hunter 1/6th scale ARF from Flying Legends
Z, congratulations on your maiden !
The brakes do judder, I tried a few things including removing one of the o-rings and sealing up the air outlet for that unit as well as using plenty of lube. I also reduced the air pressure for the brakes and this made it more acceptable.
Capacity of each of the saddle tanks as I remember it is 1.2 litres each with the centre being 2.1 litres.
Regards
Colin

RE: Hawker Hunter 1/6th scale ARF from Flying Legends
Thanks guys.. and thanks for the info Mike ;-) When I landed I had emptied the saddle tanks and had a full main tank left. That was on a 5min flight, so I suspect my bingo fuel at around 6-7mins?
Total fuel, roughly 10mins... 5 per the saddle tanks and almost 5 (based on Colin's measurement for the main tank) for the main ;-)
Colin, I'll try less pressure in the tank and some lube

Ok guys, here's a question for ya... Upon further research it appears that somehow the lower piston (at the scissor link) is pushed out too far?

I wound up carefully re drilling and deepening the holes for the set screws that hold the scissors/wheel assembly to the main strut then spotted it with hysol just to be sure. Not a fun job, the factory must have some kind of jig to compress it while assembling?

RE: Hawker Hunter 1/6th scale ARF from Flying Legends
I think this is definitely a weak point because the holes for the set screws were not (at least on mine) drilled deeply enough to hold the assembly under loads from typical ground ops coupled with the significant compression loads from the springs.

My holes seem ok. It just seems like the lower piston is being popped out too far from the spring? Either that, or I'm not assembling it back together correctly?

There is that little split ring amongst the parts that is meant to go on the "piston" compression rod. That split ring then keeps the piston from slipping thru the clearance hole and popping the whole mess loose. It is a real test to get this split ring, piston, compression spring assembly aligned and then into the upper strut while compressing the trailing link enough to mate the upper and lower half of the strut then get the set screws tightened.
I about needed a therapist once I was lucky enough to get it back together............

OK, I'm just out of the sim in Houston and on iPad only so it's a bit limiting on my end.
