CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
We have been waiting for this
Over time, the 10 year old kit has developed some shortcomings, which caused us to think about a complete refurbishing into todays CARF standards. Increased prefabrication, design changes for turbine position, main fuselage hatch and landing gear mount make it overall a much better kit, representing CARF’s level of quality and perfection.
The all new CARF-Models MiG-15 has been significantly upgraded over the orginal version in the following areas:
- The old one-piece hatch has been replaced by a 3-part hatch, one of which gets permanently glued on. This increases strength and accessibility to the built in equipment.
- The canopy has been separated from the front part of the hatch, so that a cockpit installation gets easier and a sliding canopy becomes an option.
- The turbine has been moved forward by considerable 30 cm (12"). This gurantees that no balance lead is required to obtain the correct CG. Thus the plane becomes lighter and will be guaranteed below the 13.5 kg limit of the Jet World Masters regulation.
- The two long glass rods have been replaced by two carbon reinforced ring-formers. These hold the pre-installed sockets for the new, short carbon rods, making the wing less flexible at almost no weight gain.
- Due to the new turbine position the thrust tube is extended. For easy installation the large intake duct is split in two pieces. The front half is already installed in the fuselage, as well as the air intake lip, which is glued to the fuselage, leaving the builder no further work to do.
- The nose gear formers are factory-glued into the fuselage, using the readily installed intake duct as a strong support
- The tail, which is made in a very complex 4-piece mold, is installed, alligned and secured to the fin, leaving no additional work to the builder.
- The wings have received a reinforced gear mount structure
- The instruction manual is all new (and already completed on day one of the sales launch), reflecting all the new features of the kit
- The new CARF-made Kevlar fuel tank fits between the main formers and holds almost 3.5 l of fuel (to be purchased separately)
All other signature features of the CARF MiG-15 have been kept such as 100% scale outlines, the silver painted scale surface (russian style ;-), the flying characteristics, the low wing loading, the scale fidelity of its details and the scale landing gear. All in all a modern replica of a golden classic. The CARF MiG-15 is back!

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
The old MIG15 CARF is perfectly known to fly perfectly with a 80 class turbine as it was designed for !!!
Real MIG 15 are very low powered planes, and with a 80 class turbine, it is over-powered by design !
I've seen some MIG 15 flying, and a 80 class turbine is way enough ! (should be interesting to see it even lighter with a P70 !)
Please keep this plane light and with moderate climb rate and moderate speed ! It's a MIG 15 !

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
I agree, I have a Carf MiG-15 that I fly with a XPS Dynamax EDF setup, plane weighs 30lbs and I have 19lbs of thrust and it is plenty enough to push the MiG around with authority. This new updated version looks like it would be a much easier plane to convert to EDF power with the fan/turbine location moved forwards a lot, I had to stuff everything I had into the nose to avoid adding lead, and the batteries take up all the space available in the cockpit area in between the intake ducts.

Not really, it would fly it, but no vertical elements! For scale flying you actually need a bit more power, so you can fly scale speed and power through the vertcials (the model has nothing like the momentum of the full scale) Really this aeroplane is crying out for the P-100RX type turbines...

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
Dave any upgrades on the retract mechanisms? I heard stories about them which is why I have stayed away so far. A new CARF MiG-15 would be a great hit but am concerned if the LG has had no upgrades. Any ideas as to whether they were strengthened, etc...
Thanks!

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
According to Carf/Intairco, the 2012 version has upgrades on the landing gear as well. I expect my Mig15/landing gear set/fuel tank to arrive in a week or two. Will be using my P80se.

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
Kim, please post up pictures of the landing gear when you get them, it would be interesting to see what has been changed, or if they still use the same units. I would like to have some main units that where a bit stronger, my gut feeling is that the gear I have in mine is a bit weak for a 30lb jet, it is too easy to crack a main gear trunnion if the landing is a bit rough. I also hope they have strengtened the main gear mounts as they needed reinforcement on my older kit.

I know Intairco have changed material on the yokes of all their gear, I think the design is improved too
Dw
OK, checked its a material update on the Yokes and the wheels are now the split type so Tyres can be changed. Nothing new since the big change in gear design.

RE: CARF Mig 15 2012 version released!
I have owned (4) of these migs over the years and the latest intairco (red) gear works fine imo. The design changes needed to be in the kit parts fit, durability and ease of assembly. The mig can be a hand full on landing in windy conditions so beefier gear mounts would be a good improvement by the factory.

Dave, is it possible or worth it to get the new ring formers with the carbon rod mounts to modify the old version? I'm just abou to start the build.
