SKYMASTER F9F Build Thread
Soon Iwill be posting a build sequence for a new Skymaster F9F
in the GMGRU-1 scheme (Guided Missile Group one)
This is a build for a customer and will include the following components:
Wren 160 Kpro turbine
Futaba brushless servos and radio
Duralite Powerbox champion w 2, 5200MAH Rx batteries
Jet-Tronics air valves and sequencer
Modifications currently planned are:
1. Functioning Blowdown doors (there are 2 sets in the turtledeck that open during takeoff )
2. Functioning Air Brakes (under Fuselage.. Ibelieve these aided in carrier landings!)
3. Lighting system to duplicate what they had in 1958
4. Addition of 3 HVARrockets under each wing
5. Smoke System of my own design.
Should be a HOOT
Hopefully it will be operational in time for either the Liberty Bell Jet Rally
or the Hamburg Jet Rally!...

RE: SKYMASTER F9F Build Thread
One feature Ireally like is the removeable nose
This allows for easy running gear install and achieving
CG without the requirement to add lead!!
Iwill do everything possible to avoid adding dead weight to a plane!

Do you mean the main air intakes for the turbine?
No they are all finished and connect to a fiberglass
duct that terminates just in front of the turbine rails

RE: SKYMASTER F9F Build Thread
OK I'm starting with servo install
Idecided to start with the tail feathers
but Ifound that there is slop in the bores
of the phenolic rudder posts (3). The dimensions are
as follows: Supplied music wire = 1.7mm bores in the rudder
and on the fuse = 2.35mm. SO I am mulling over various ways to
control this as Idon't like slop in any hinge since under some circumstances
that can lead to flutter!
see pics
( the fit of the supplied wire in the rudder itself is perfect, no slop at all!!!)

RE: SKYMASTER F9F Build Thread
Iwill try 1 of 2 methods:
1. Try and find some sort of bushing that can be inserted in the existing bores
2. Mold new bores by coating the supplied hinge wire with light grease or silicone
then carefully inserting the wire in the bores and building up small puddles of Aeropoxy/Vpoxy
with milled glass in it to form new bores. When the epoxy cures, then Ican twist the wire and remove it
leaving perfect and quite tight bores!
more later

OK Iopted for the build up of epoxy method
when this cures Iwill rotate the wire and it will pull out!
Then trim the ends with a dremel so it will properly fit into
the milled grooves in the rudder

RE: SKYMASTER F9F Build Thread
I have just finished building and flying the Cougar variant. I used a plastic bushing for the rudder wire and it works well. I would recommend that you turn the rudder servo 180 degrees and make short push rods otherwise you need to hog out a huge amount of the elevator rear spar to get the servo horn in.

The tail structure for the Panther must besomewhat dirfferent than the Cougar!
Ihave no difficulty getting the servo in... all Ihad to dowas grind a small relief
so the servo post could slide past the upper section. However ther is a small problem
in that Iwill have to shim the servo up so the bottom of the servo will clear
the scale counterweight.. no biggie

OKwith some shims in, the bottom of the servo will
clear the scale counterweight... nothing is ever simple!
good thing when you have been in this hobby for a while
you have an abundance of shims hanging around... HAH

Aussie Bart,
Great looking install on the SM Cougar.
I see you are using the new Robbe/Futaba S-Bus PSS 2018 "powerbox" ... any chance you might post a thread on how it works and if you're pleased with it? Several of us in the US are quite interested and may be ordering some from Emcotec in Germany, since we don't have a US importer for them yet, and the guys at the US Futaba importer seem to be tone deaf about what S-Bus users want...
Don't mean to steal George's thread, but curious!
thanks..

RE: SKYMASTER F9F Build Thread
Yea Isaw that too.. I'm using the standard powerbox as I'm using a R6014HS reciever..and in
this plane all of the batteries need to be WAY up front to balance. Imake up my own servo leads custom length
to the powerbox BUTIknow the SBus stuff is eventually the way to go. How does it handle the larger current drain of the
high power digital servos? Iknow the "standard" powerbox I'm using is rock solid in heavier, faster jets with digital servos!
Eventually though I'msure the S Bus will be the gold standard here...

Hi Shane,
Your cougar looks great! Are using a UMS hydraulic system on the gear? How is it going for you? What oil are you using? Baby oil?
Lov that paint scheme and your fitout....very nice.
Regards,
Craig.
