Cincinnati Jet Club F-18's project
I thought I would start a thread on our new winter project, so to speak. A group of us here in Cincinnati (Joe Dirr, Mike Molnar and myself) decided that we need to have a large Yellow Aircraft F-18 Hornet by next year. So after sorting out the details, we called Shaun up and ordered two of them....Joe D. already had his F-18 kit.
Don't expect an orderly build thread here, as I had already done much of the work on Joe D's F-18 and will soon just start the other two. There will be a little back and forth.
I would like to hear from any owner/builders of this airplane. I am looking to beef it up in some areas, especially the wing mounts. All three of us are putting large turbines in them and would like to feel confident they will stay together.
Here are some pics of the day the other two arrived on a skid at Joe's work.....

We have a few scale mods we will be doing as well. Joe D. can chime in later on the details but right now we are looking at scale flap hinges, scratch built cockpits with poss the iflytailies screens, scale folding ladder, lights, operating canopies, etc...
We are going to try out the tires that invertmast makes. Anything is better than the foam.

Glad to see you've started a build thread; It'll be a good place showcase some of the special features we're adding to our Y/A F-18's and obtain feedback from those who have built one or more these beautiful birds!

We all thought the nose wheel steering needed something better than a pull-pull cable system.
Therefore, I designed a direct drive setup that has no play between the nose strut tiller arm and the servo arm.
The Monster Links on the tiller arm have been sleeved with brass tubing.
The 4-40 rod is threaded ONLY on the servo arm side; the rod on the tiller arm side has no threads and is meant to BOTTOM OUT in the Monster links when the nose strut is extended.
When the nose strut retracts the 4-40 rods pull away from the Monster links on the tiller arm about 1/4"; the brass tubes are 1-1/4 long providing plenty of overlap of the 4-40 rods.
It seems to work very well and should provide very precise steering control.

Here are a couple more pics with the nose strut retracted.

Love the detail on the gear!! I would like to find a place, that sells the nomenclature for landing gear.
I like the site.... great pictures, but take a couple minutes to figure out how to navigate it.
Another option..... not sure its worth the extra work or not.

Hey joe. Finish the hornets and bring em to Mississippi next year! Great paint scheme John for your hornet. I think that jet is on display now at MCAS Miramar in the "whales ******" as Ron Burgandy would call Sant' Diagoooh

It would be a no brainer JoeW to get a couple more Hawgs for this Broadway expo. I will get back in time to participate in this life time experience if we can put it together. Actually I have always preferred to be on the sticks than a spectator. The devil made me do these CD/Organizer things.....

The Behotec pushed 42+lbs
The 200SX pushed 51+lbs
The 180 actually pushed 46+lbs (an under rated turbine!)
