Hello Mirce,
Do you know if it is possible to fit the Airworld landing gear of their 104 or whether modifications are needed to get them to fit? Thanks.

I think, that landing gear must fit, because that is two absolutely same models.
In center fuselage section must be made changes, because Airworlds landing gears are in one section tighten on wooden part which come from front to rear side.

I have some other drawings of F 104 scale landing gears, but from smaller scale.
Must find time and ask my friend Martin to made drawings of all parts, increase all and finally change area in fuselage around landing gears.
That is complex process, but can be made.
This construction first must be made in 3D program...

I got my nose section sheeted, I sanded the nose cone to a more cylindrical shape, looks more scale.

The Airworld gear have been used in this model, this is a picture of another modelers plane with the gear fitted, not much modification is needed.

Fantastic job Luke...

If the installation of Airworld landing gear is not complicated, that is great news also.

Thanks Mirce!

I am out of wood! I am waiting for my National balsa order to show up any day now. While I am waiting I framed up the tip tanks.

Notice the slick method used to hold the screws for the tip tanks. They are pre installed
while building so they are a permanent part of the tank. Only a small hole is needed to
guild your Allen wrench when attaching the tanks.

I am also using the M6-1.0x30mm screws to connect the fuselage pieces.

A little area I cleaned up and made it a little more scale is where the vertical meets the fuselage.
The top of the hatch in the stock kit actually bows upward and the vertical blends with the hump on
the spine. The red line in the picture shows how the shape of the original looked before shaping.
A much better way and much easier to construct is to sand the top of the hatch down 3/16" at the rear edge,
and reshape the formers behind that to match. Then just continue the sheeting to the base of the vertical. You can
see I added some support for the sheeting. Then it is an easy task to build the correct shape to the leading edge of the
vertical and blend it with whats left of the spine.

The last ten days have been pretty exciting.

Same like front and rear fuselage section, middle part was the excellent engineering projected and designed. To be frank, this is most complicated part on model, but assembling was easy.

First, I compiled all to see in which order I glued parts.

I must order aluminum tubes for landing gear carrier, wing joiners, elevator tube and wing guide.
Damiano send me all dimensions, and after that I can order tubes. Some are squares, some rounded. Now all this tubes I offer like optionally parts in F 104 wooden kit.

Few ribs, where will be wing connection on fuselage, I made separately and later glued in center fuselage section.

Other part of fuselage middle section was made separately and at the end all was composed...

For front landing gears must be added two aluminum tubes 16 x 20 mm. Tubes are not glued for now...

For easier access, Damiano made cover that can be removed.

OK, now I have all fuselage parts, so next step was to put all together...

Model is 4,15 meter long!!!!!!!! Almost does not fit into the workshop. Crazy...

Parallel with this, I worked on tip tanks and start wings.

Tip tanks are boring job, because cover must be made from many narrow stripes. I think to made removable tip tanks for easier transportation.

Wings are very easy to create. First step was to made square "frame" for ribs "legs".

All sides and parts should be at right angles. I used aluminum tubes and triangles to made everything at an angle of 90 degrees...

For straight side - aluminum tube too...

Than 3 mm balsa plates, first on rear side, next on leading edge...

Same process will be made on other wing half...

Great progress Mirce, and very good building! I've had so much fun with this plane, and it is a very worthwhile subject to model, it will make a very good impression at the field!

My balsa will be here tomorrow so I can finish my tip tanks and when the spars show up I will have my wings done, really looking forward to that!

Keep up the great work!

Been making progress on my 104. I'm sure everyone knows, but Mirce is building the kit stock as an instruction guide and I'm adding modifications for a more scale look. Nothing is wrong with the kit as it is, but it's just a personal preference on my part to make changes and it's fun for me. I've very much enjoyed working on this model, very rewarding project.

I will sheet the entire plane, make a mold of the bottom for the gear and door area and then cut that section out for the gear installation. This should not be a problem because of the simplicity of the scale gear mounting area and the fact that you have full access to the inside of the cavernous fuselage with the nose and tail removed. Normally I would not do it this way, but I must wait on the gear.

For the intake and fuselage intersection on the bottom, after rounding the intake formers I added 1/4" balsa caps to the intersection area where it was much to tight of a radius, then I sanded them to a nice transition.

Here you can see it is a much more subtle and smooth transition, this will help with the gear doors and gear fitment.

Next I capped the keel peice for the intake fairing, the stock set up was to short. I capped my intakes with 3/4" balsa or 20mm and extended my intake fairing 136mm. I am measuring my 1/32 scale F-104, that is how I'm getting my scale measurements.

This is the roughed in intake, I never finish sand a part until the final sanding, I always recommend that you sneak up on the outline instead of jumping right to it. So the intakes will be final sanded before finishing.

I'm 6'8" tall, finally have a model that makes me look short! Had to work outside to have access to the intakes with the nose on, would not fit in the shop!

I've already built the tip tanks, working on the fins now. Also my wing spars should come soon, and I will have the wings on it in no time!

Thanks Damo! I am working with another modeler on the gear, that bought a kit from Mirce. I had some CAD drawings from the Avonds 104 gear, and with those and some of his ideas he is going to draw the new gear up in Rhino.
Then I have a friend that makes anything you can want in a factory CNC machine, he will be making the parts, then they go back to the other guy for assembly. I hope we can make something that works!

Scale tire size is 6", but I'm going to use 5 1/2" here:

Thank you Luke for text and pictures you show here...

Damiano has designed a great model, which provides an excellent basis.
Through making representations here, but as a couple topic on the net, can see the quality of wooden kit and builder enthusiasm to make a good scale Starfigter.

In my building idea is to made model which will be interesting to modeler for maybe lower level of scale details. I'll made some small changes for better model shape, details on surface, etc, but will not install scale landing gears, for example.

But, thanks to other builder we will have opportunity to see all pomp of great scale model.
So, thanks Luke and other builder of this F 104 kit please be kind and share your project with us...

BTW, yesterday I ordered 10 transparent canopies, I got promise that will have them in next two - three weeks.
Aluminum tubes for wing joiners, landing gears, wing alignment during building are available immediately.
Aluminum part for connection elevator & rudder will be ready for shipping in next two weeks also...

You are welcome Mirce, this will be a good resource for builders I hope.

The wings are so easy, I am just dry fitting the wing to check the parts, they look great. I installed the blind nut for the
tip tank installation, must do that before sheeting.

Had to make two small parts for the wing spars, one ply piece to cap the rib and another to add extra support
to the spar end. Plenty of scrap from the jig legs on the fuselage!

The tip tank looks awesome on the wing, can't wait to mount them, had way to much going on today to make any good
progress. But the wings are tiny and once I am happy with everything I will finish them easily.

I'm waiting to see if Mirce glued the round spar permanently into the wing, I don't see why it would need to be removed,
but I just want to be sure. I will add some set screws for the square spars so they can be removed, just some 1/4" ply on
the bottom and a hole drilled and tapped, but I will also leave them in the wing.

Luke, super build as always...

Damiano told me to remove round aluminum tube from wing. I ask him few times about that and answer was always same - no need for round tube.
That tube is not heavy, I think just 160 - 170 gr, so maybe can stay to give extra strength. Also, that tube can go out on wing end and be guide for tip tank...
Now it's builder choice, with or without tube...

I'll add few new pictures soon...

Regards

I think I'll do same. This is huge model, few more grams will not change anything, but for sure wing will be more strong.

I think that aluminum tube in my wing will go outside as much as it need for tip tank guide, about 30 - 40 mm...

Wings are set for the first time on fuselage center panel section. They fit very well. same like all parts from this kit.

With tip tank...

Nice February weather allow one small photo session. This is good example how big is 1/4 scale F 104. Also, show how small are wings...

Than, back to "lab"...

For inlet channel I used 0,5 thin mm plastic. CA glued perfectly to fuselage ribs...

Front part & cowl are finished and ready for glassing. No need for filler, surface is so smooth, transition from one to another part are nice. I'm very satisfied...

Few days ago I ordered 10 transparent cabin, hope will get them in next two weeks, aluminum part for rudder - elevator connection will be in my workshop on same time, I prepare all aluminum tubes for kit and print rings set for elevator aluminum tube...

Almost every day talk with Luke and he made great job on his Starfighter. We exchange ideas about construction...
Also, I have daily chat with Damiano, that mean, I have answer on every question about this model...

Regards

Hi Mirce, is the plywood lite ply or standard plywood and what is the thickness of the fuselage ply?
Thanks.

Hello Reuben,

all parts in wooden kit are made of 4 mm poplar plywood. Sheeting is 3 mm balsa...
Complete model will later be cover with glass cloth & epoxy resin...

For now, construction is lightweight but very strong.

Hi Mirce, you certainly know how to demonstrate the build of the F104 it looks so easy to build your photos say a lot about the build, I am waiting for you to receive the canopy and elevator/rudder parts befor I place my order with you. the only thing about this kit that I can see from the photos are that the intake sides look flat instead of rounded as per the full size, maybe this can be rectified when you cut the formers. but great job and a big saveing on the airworld model. keep up the good work and build information mirce best regards
