Frank Tiano...humanitarian and child welfare advocate...who'd a thunk it???

A year and a half ago I sent Frank a pic of my daughter Marley (3 months old at the time) sitting on my lap flying Realflight. Man did he get pissed! He told me I was making a mistake forcing RC on her and that if I did she would grow up to hate it. I should let her try it when she is older if she wants to bla bla bla but don't be an idiot and force it on her ETC. I appreciated his opinion but truthfully the pic was taken to try to get my wife mad.

Well, Frank...here goes: I had no idea that you could actually win money at Top Gun but since I did...today my wife used it to pay for Marley's next set of ballet lessons!

I hope you are happy now...LOL!

While we're on the Top Gun subject, what happened to Matt Lupri's FW-190? I closely followed his build thread and feel bad he apparently crashed.

Also, I have every Top Gun video since 1996 and enjoy watching them particularly during the Illinois winters. I'm interested if anyone knows if Frank will continue to allow videos or why they stopped. Werner told me in an email that he was no longer doing Top Gun but I see he still films at other events.

Thanks.

Matt's -190 was flying great then mid flight spiraled in and was a right off. Sad as it was quite a nice bird.

Werner and Scott were there filming all week FYI.

Thanks allot Rich. I am pretty made up about it as well. Even jet lag and having to prep for another event hasn't knocked the edge off it
Now I just have to hope the model ships back to me in one bit.... Fingers crossed!

Hey all

Good to see everyone again, always a great time at TG and all the cool models.

Yes, all was going well, did a half reverse cuban 8 and it never pulled out. I was definitely pulling full up and adding power, but nothing happened...I new it was going in 3 seconds prior, as I saw no noticeable difference in the shape of the pull out ! Still trying to figure it out what was amiss with the elevator

But rebuild is underway! Wing already glued back together with carbon fiber slat on the spars...and a whole new front end for the fuse will start soon. It'll return for next year.

best,

Matt

Hello Matt, I'm glad that I met you again on TG. I was very sad when saw your nice FW after that crash. Glad you will rebuild it again.
I have few pictures of model after crashing. Maybe will be interesting to put it here, but want to ask you for permission first...

All the best from Serbia

With the apparent increase in jet aircraft at Top Gun this year. Do you think Top Gun would benefit with a jet only class leaving the Pro-am classes to propeller driven aircraft only. I would like to hear some thoughts if you have any such as Pro's and Con's.

Do you think that Jet aircraft have any advantages over the current field of WW-1 and WW-II given the current technology?

In my view the level of detail that can be put on a WW1 aircraft is far greater than on a Jet . So I tend to think that WW1 stuff haas the advantage

I never understand why people want to separate Jets they are just a plane with a differnt propulsion system

None of the different types of planes have a technology advantage over each other. The technology is available to everyone to put gyros on any plane, WW1, WW2, Jets, Aerobatic, Civilian, etc. The advantage the jets have is speed, wing loading, and lack of p-factor. They fly faster and the wing loading lets them penetrate rough air without being bounced around as much as a Sopwith. Think of riding in a Cessna 172 vs. 737 in similar conditions, the 737 is much smoother ride. The gyros the jets guys choose to use just smoothes things out that much more.

WW1 guys generally do not have tailwheels, so that puts them at an even great disadvantage since a gyro can only do so much with a tiny rudder and wooden skid. They also have a much harder time with documentation(in the classes that require it) since their chosen subjects are nearing 100 years old, and few if any exist anymore. They dig and research and do the best they can with documentation. WW2 and Jet guys can go to a local airshow or airliners.net and find thousands of pictures to build from. It is ture that WW1 planes do have more tiny details to recreate, that also means that much more to get wrong in static judging. Jets are smooth, and clean on the outside, HOWEVER, they have landing geart struts, lights, brakes, and sometimes very complicated flaps to duplicate, and also get wrong in the judges' eyes.

So I think that jets have an inherent advantage over everything else just because the evolution of the airplane has created that. The technology is available to every pilot, how each pilot decides to deploy that tech is up to him. The WW1 guys should earn the respect of everyone given the shear amounts of stick movements they need just to fly straight in a crosswind. Landing is whole other story!!!

The WW2 guys have the sexiest planes, so they win!
