RE: Best way to instal CAT (Air Trap)?
Hi, I make the CAT and as far as mounting you can mount it vertically with the fittings at the top, or horizontal with the fill barb (smaller fitting at 12 o/c) or angled like some other UAT products again with the smaller fitting at 12 o/c.
The supplied mounting frame allows all these positions to be achieved easily and securely.

Agreed on all points Marc. The product is truly top notch in every area. Installed my second last night in a customers Ultra Flash and will be installing the third in my son's Ultra Flash. It is my unit of choice for the future!!
Thanks for your great inovation on this.

John, gosh, very humbled by your support on this and glad you find the CAT product to your liking.
I am busy making a large order for Todd (Dreamworks) currently, and I am truly bowled over at the popularity of these units over in the USA, Todd was very supportive of the whole process and hats off to him and his trusting nature in dealing with me and a product with whom he had no previous experience.

What is the best way to get the air out of the CAT? If it were more translucent, it might be easier. Even with the more flexible UAT, there are some problems for the first few flights after getting air into the central core of the air traps. So how do you purge the inner sanctum of the filter, to get all the air out?

Marc,
I have one of these in my hunter and so far I like it. The hunter has 2 saddle tanks feeding a main tank then that feeds the CAT. I'm putting a slightly smaller model together and it may only have two saddle tanks. Is it ok to run those to a 'Y' or 'T' then into the CAT, or should I add a second inlet nipple to the CAT, and if so any recommendations on how I can execute that?
Thanks!

Ok, i fill, then reverse, and maybe that will help, but will it take out the air from within the filter element? I still havnt seen one apart, or pictures of the elements within the CAT. So its the line that goes to the engine that needs to be reverse flushed??

If you flush it through before fitting it, and then fill it normally in situ you should not get any issues with air within the filter.
To flush connect up either of the two barbs on the edge to your fuel feed, connect up the centre barb to a container, block the spare barb and drive some fuel through. You can reverse the connections to flush the other way if required.

Igot my first one from Todd and Imust say that Iam liking it very much. It was a chore to slip the 6mm line over the barbs, but they do go on. Now Ican see why Ali doesn't safety tie these off - there is no way in h*ll that these are slipping off! The wooden tray is very well made from good plyand makes it a snap to anchor into place. Pricing is very competitive.
Iam done with the 'other' versions.

Been using one for 10 flights in a comparf UL in place of the stock supplied. Fits in the same hole. No mods. And loving it. To get rid of air I just tilt the model up on its mains for a few seconds while filling. And that does it. Never had any air come through the lines during running. Rock solid product. Won't ever go to anything else. Plus it looks great.

Ok,
I know i can be slow about some things, and see something a certain way, until reality jolts it clear, so here we go, with some trepidation.
When the membrane is wetted, then air will not penetrate. And this seems to be the principle that makes these work. So when you fill them for the first time, and you fill them slowly, then air will be pushed through the filter and the whole CAT will be full of kero. Ok, but once the filter is wetted, and the lines are adjusted or changed, and air gets into the center from whence the fuel is drawn, then the air that is in there will not pass through or be displaced, and is there to slosh and put bubbles through the lines, and what happens is exactly what should not happen, just because now you have air in the core that cannot be removed. So thats my handicap. I cannot get those bubbles out of my mind either.

Marc, maybe a short YouTube clip of you filling a new CAT for the first time and explaining the procedure to ensure the air is out may be useful?

There's no reason to "purge the air out of the membrane". Fill it and fly it. It's not the same internals as the BVM UAT. I think there's a communication breakdown between indubitably and Marc. Fuel up and go fly. It's not a bag inside.
Marc, please confirm this is as simple as " fuel and fly".

RE: Best way to instal CAT (Air Trap)?
Not to say that its the best way to mount the unit, just the most practical to my installation space, but Ive had mine positioned vertically in my CARF Flash for around 80 flights with no issues, theres also several people mounting them horizontally, again with no issue, I dont think purging the air is a huge issue due to pleated paper filter. Generally as you are filling the unit, you can see the small amount of air (normally created when filling the system) venting from the CAT into the Main Tank and then out of the Vent.
Couldnt agree more Sparhawk, mine are still lockwired on all three fittings but thats more to fulfill my OCD than the actual concern of them slipping off or letting air in
